Heres a review from a local of 15 years. Higher Grounds has always been my favorite coffee shop in Pagosa. Even now that we have a Starbucks I visit frequently(although I am glad Higher Grounds prices have come down).First, I love the atmosphere. Its homey and everyone knows my name, and on occasion I have taken a nap on their couch while waiting to work. Many of the baristas have been there for several years and the owner is great! Drink quality is better than ever as it appears they recently upgraded their espresso machine. Ive been to Boulder Coffee and Riverpointe but they just dont compare in drinks or atmosphere or friendliness. The only reason I didnt give 5 stars is the food. A lot of it has remained the same through the years but some of my favorite treats have disappeared(blackberry cream cheese scones?) I can say Ive enjoyed the change from Chorizo to sausage in the burritos. But the lunch menu is pretty bland and just too pricey. Change it up a bit, you obviously have someone who is very talented with food...

Great atmosphere, restroom kept at arctic temps (your ass will freeze to the seat! no hot water), coffee high quality most of the time (especially when not busy). I love this place because the people are so nice, the atmosphere is buzzing with intellectual conversations and people studying/working, they have the science channel on whenever Im in there. Super cool. I would say they probably need 1 extra man on staff during really busy days, only because today the espresso in my mocha was burnt crispy - tasted like the black of a roasted marshmallow. I feel bad for the guy he was swamped! Not sure about the ladies restroom, but the mens is right next to an open door to the outside so going to the bathroom requires some finesse and possibly hovering.. I love this place so I hope my review is helpful to the owners and people who also enjoy the top notch atmosphere. Ill update the review to reflect any changes in the future.

I didnt like this place for a number of years based on some early experiences but now it usually wins out. If you dont like something say so. They bend backwards to fix it. That was my mistake. Great outdoor seating, lots of food and drink options, most of which are very good. Also best hours out of anything that isnt Starbucks. Mix of Mines students and business professionals most of the time. Great baristas. Coffee is usually good but changes around a bit. Dark coffees are sometimes burnt but its hard to find beans that arent burnt. Thats a standard set by Starbucks. NOBODY is ever better off going to Starbucks. Decoration is art house/typical coffee shop randomness except for Kerouac type murals. Ceilings are a bit low, but I am 64" and never bump my head.

I always try to make an effort not to buy starbucks, and went out of way to support what I thought would be good local coffee. However, came to find that I would have almost been better off supporting the coporate demon starbucks. I always drink my coffee black, so you know this is an authentic review. In two visits I ordered the dark roast of the day both times, and it was horrible. It was bitter and weak coffee, Ive had better cups of coffee from 7-11.

Yeah, 60 yr old dude running the place is flirting with two very young (freshman?) college women ahead of me such that it took 20min to get a cup of coffee... Seriously? And, have to admit, the coffee was not worth the wait. Chose this place to avoid going to the national conglomerate chain down the street. If I go out of my way to go local, I should hope local businesses would go out of their way to provide good service.

Friendly staff. Sit inside or outside on the deck overlooking downtown. The deck is a great place to sit and enjoy some java. Cool atmosphere with changing art on the walls, tables and a couch. The only coffee shop in town that has free wireless Internet for ANY customer! Drink local (and very good) coffee.... mmmm

This coffee shop has great coffee and good food. Prices are good to average for a little coffee joint and the service is friendly! Free wi-fi is fast. Im a bit of a coffee snob so I dont give my seal of approval easily, but this place has smooth black coffee and espresso that is still plenty flavorful.

Cute little old timey feeling coffee shop in Golden. If you looking for one of those trendy-type coffee shops, this won’t be your place, but it is extremely cute and cozy. Spent a few hours here one morning getting work done and enjoyed the ambiance, the people watching and my chai tea.

Love this place. Its low-key + reasonably priced. Also... usually warm, unlike most other coffee shops that have you freezing! Ive only been in the afternoon so Im not versed in their food, but the coffee/tea selection is good. Great place to settle in + study/work for a few hours.

Ive been here twice now, and both times really enjoyed the staff and the atmosphere. They are down to earth & friendly. Its very clean, spacious, has an outdoor area, and the chai tea is great! Yesterday I has their spicy sausage breakfast wrap, and will likely have it again.

Nate is the best! He remembers EVERYones special orders. "The usual?" is a question he can ask many customers without more info needed to get it right every time. The coffee and chai are yummy, and the atmosphere comfy. Go here. Give them some money. You wont be disappointed!

This place is AWESOME. The service and coffee are the best in the area. The comforting environment provides a nice place to gather with friends and family. Jeff, the owner, is a wonderful person who takes pride in his business. Stop in and enjoy the atmosphere.

Cozy, small coffee shop, lots of local art. Coffee is good, food is nothing to write reviews about. Average baked goods and pathetic breakfast burritos, even remember the last one I ate here 2 years ago. Still bad. Seriously though, still a nice quaint cafe.

Great locally-owned coffee shop. The owner is always there keeping the quality and customer service to a high standard. A great place for relaxing or to take advantage of the free WiFi for getting some work done.

Not impressed... Coffee was weak, atmosphere was mediocre and service was terrible. This is an old folk hang out. The art on the walls wreaks of nostalgia and the low ceiling feels claustrophobic.

"barista"(which overrates his skill level greatly) was rude. Toddy was all milk. I think he may have waved a coffee Bean over it. Places like this show why Starbucks is so popular.

The best coffee shop on the west side of town. The owner, Jeff, and his staff are the friendliest bunch. They take care of you better than your mom would!

Fantastic little local coffee shop with free wifi. Art on the walls, cozy atmosphere, just a nice place to grab a (good) cup of joe.

The man that served me coffee was knowledgeable and kind. Better prices than other local coffee shops such as Pangea and Starbucks.
