If I could give them 0 stars, I would. Their sushi is just so-so, Ive had much better for comparable prices. The people who work here are friendly, but the manager/owner is greedy. Our group of 20+ people decided to eat here because the waiters had previously been very accomodating to our large group and being willing to give us all separate checks because we were still charged the automatic 18% gratuity. However, last night the manager/owner was there and was telling the waiters that they were only allowed to do 5 checks per group, so we had to figure out how to split it amongst ourselves, and it turned out to be chaotic because they show the "half-off" discount as a whole at the bottom of the bill. On top of the messy bill, one of the orders for our group had to wait almost an HOUR for their food because there was a "fight" in the kitchen and they were refusing to cook, yet the manager didnt even give their bill a discount for having to wait so long to eat. Our group spent around $400 total there last night, and they werent that busy, so youd think the manager would have shown more appreciation for our business. I heard they changed ownership not that long ago, so that could be the reason for the hassle when we didnt have a problem going there last month. The consensus among the group was that we wont be eating here again.

My wife and I love sushi and we have been to our share of good and bad restaurants it seems like most of the bad ones are here in oxnard though....this is one of them! we dont mean to be so harsh on this restaurant but the truth is the edamame is brown and soggy glasses are usually a little dirty service is FINE nothing too great about this restaurant at all we do love the upscale more than anything just because the sushi is just such a biiiig difference when you know its fresh you know the source and you know the chefs prepare it well SUMO seems to be the dirtiest restaurants we have been to we have peeked behind the suhi bar and its just horrible dirt everywhere the ceilings look like they have water leakage damage meaning if its raining out you might get a drip or two on your sushi SO BEWARE ...the only reason we go there is when we are broke and crave sushi aaaaaand dont care about the service or quality...my opinion is save a little extra and go over to anaba sushi off victoria they have the best sushi I have ever had in my life!

I came here with my family, on the basis of the four-star average rating. The water glasses were filthy. We pointed this out to the waitress, who said, "yikes," and brought us new glasses (chilled and frosty, so we couldnt tell if they were clean). They didnt have three of the things we wanted to order. We ordered sushi and their very best sake. When the waitress brought the sake bottle, she said, "if you dont finish it, we can keep it here for you." I said, "we wont finish it, but well just take the rest with us." She lied and said this would be illegal. I pointed out that weve done this lots of times elsewhere. She checked with the manager and said that its legal but management wont allow it. I pointed out that, if we bought it, it should be ours. She said they would keep it for us. Opened sake goes bad in a few days, so this is a transparent way to force high-end customers who order their best stuff to return soon. We said that we would walk out if they were going to enforce a dumb rule. She shrugged. We left.

Sumo Japanese Restaurant is one of my go to sushi places when Im in Ventura. The food is really good here. Ive eaten here in the restaurant as well as taken my order to go. Usually if I get it to go Ill call before and pick up when they tell me it should be ready. I always eat at the bar since Im usually here alone so the rolls are made fairly quickly. I love their Albacore Lover roll here (or any roll with albacore in it). Sometimes Ill get their combination bento boxes that come with a bunch of different choices such as teriyaki chicken/steak and a bunch of other options. It comes with salad and a miso soup. One of my favorite dishes is the salmon collar that they have on their HH menu, but now Ill order it even if its not HH. Watch out for those large bones but the way its cooked its really good.

A favorite Japanese restaurant of my familys for several years (10+ to be exact). The prices are pretty reasonable, especially during Happy Hour and Reverse Happy Hour (weekdays from 9 PM to closing) that offer 1/2 off regular rolls. You could practically have a feast here! While the decor is modern, the service can take a while just to get your order made. Then again, a lot of people are here everyday...so expect a wait.

Food was great but bad customer service/experience. Me and my bf went in, super hungry, & we ordered a total of 4 rolls and the waitress asked us if we wanted to see the price before putting in the order. Who does that? We were so hungry and yes we did finish our food....also it was my birthday. Did she think we couldnt afford it because were Mexicans or what?!

Service was great until they brought out the food after that nobody came back to the table or ask if we need anything or checked on us for 30 minutes but the food was delicious this is the only place that has happy hour pricing from 3 to 6 or 9 to 10 on weekdays

This place is worth seeking out!! The shrimp grit cakes and hush puppies . . . Oh, yeah! The owner/chef was kind and informative. He even shared suggestions for other happy hours for us to check out. Even though this is a tricky place to find, find it!

Word. Me and the boys came down with the ladies to check it out.Sushi was full force, straight up good. Excellent chef and bottle service. Will definitely make this a spot to bring the ladies for a night out or just hang with the crew.

I love this restaurant... Good sushi plus other dishes, large portions and low prices. It was recommended to me when I lived in Ventura by I now live in Los Angeles and still try to get back there periodically as I did yesterday.

This was my first real sushi experience and I have to say I am a huge fan of sushi now! The food was delicious, the service was great, and the prices are fair. I highly recommend this place! Fyi our servers name was Joann.

Pretty decent combination of workmanlike sushi and good pricing. This Korean/Japanese sushi shop is good, but while the sushi is nothing special, the service is top drawer. Come here for a good meal and excellent service.

I work near Ventura and Vine and am sick of eating lunch Trader Joes for the hundredth time. I gave this place a try and it was very tasty. I had the soba noodles with extra chicken. I just hope they open later than 9PM.

Great people and even better sushi. Get the garlic chili Edamame as a starter. Best to go during happy hour, but be prepared to wait. Smallish place and is very popular, but worth the wait.
