My wife and I stopped by Cafe Chloe today (Friday) for a late lunch around 2:00pm and we were presented with a brunch menu, which I found odd at first. A quick wiki search revealed, "Brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch eaten usually during the late morning, but it can extend to as late as 3pm." That said, I went with the program and ordered the French Toast. I waited and waited and waited and approximately forty five minutes later the French Toast arrived. There were only about four other tables occupied at the restaurant so I thought twenty five minutes was a long time to wait. The French Toast was a VERY small serving, but it was VERY good. Unfortunately, the French Toast was the only good thing I experienced at Cafe Chloe today. The restroom was dirty, the floors in the dining area were dirty, the walls were scraped up and in need of paint, the windows were drafty, and the service was awful. There appeared to be only one employee working aside from the cook. That employee was the hostess, the waitress, making drinks, and bussing tables. Meanwhile, it appeared the female owner/manager was chatting it up with a vendor and the male owner/manager was trimming trees on the sidewalk. We ordered seasonal lattes after our meal, and again, waited an unseemly long time for them to arrive. Unfortunately, they were a bit too syrupy and sweet. I would have mentioned this to our server, however, she never again returned to our table except to give us our check. In conclusion, the owners need to clean up the place, paint the walls, fix the drafty windows, and ensure they have enough employees working (or help out themselves) so the customers are happy and return. We will not be returning to dine at Cafe Chloe.

Alright, Ill admit it. I felt a little out of place when I first walked in here. I had just come out of school and didnt exactly exhibit French finesse. That didnt seem to deter the staff at Café Chloe. I felt welcomed by the staff and received attentive service. And just like everyone said, Café Chloe looks super cute. Its like something that came out of someones "French Riviera" Pinterest Board. I started with the roasted pumpkin soup and it was absolutely delicious. It was creamy without feeling buttery. It also had some contrasting textures with the autumn fruit, which I believe were diced apples. For my entrée, I ordered the mussels with french fries. The fries are sliced thinly and salted perhaps a little too much for me. My salt receptors must be miscalibrated because I also thought the white wine sauce in the mussels dish was a little oversalted. However, I didnt let that stop me from enjoying the cuisine. The mussels were great, and I enjoyed the little adventure of picking them out of their shell. Pinky up! I thought I was done with my meal because the Restaurant Week menu for lunch gave the option of appetizer and entrée, or entrée and dessert. To my luck, my server said I still had dessert to choose from and I picked the crème brûlée. All three for the price of $20 instead of $35 left me saying oh là là! Once the crème brûlée was placed at my table, I cracked the first layer of hard caramel and heard a nice crunch. Although the custard itself is not overwhelming, eating the caramel with it does make it a little too sweet. Overall its a great place to try and I loved the huge mugs they serve coffee in. Makes me want to come back just for a big foamy latte.

I want my space, and Cafe Chloe wont give it to me. If you like the feeling of being a sardine, then youll enjoy being stuffed into the dining room of Cafe Chloe. Keep in mind it is a small, intimate brunch spot meant to mimic a friendly French bistro. And it does the job quite well! I just would prefer to avoid the feeling of sitting in someones lap early in the morning. Their brunch menu continues into lunchtime during the weekdays, which truthfully was a bit disheartening since I wasnt looking to have an omelette before returning to the office. I ended up ordering a salad with salmon (the one of very few actual lunch items on the menu), which I must admit was quite delicious, but definitely not for the price. Their prices are generally higher than similar spots of its kind downtown, so if youre looking for something a little more affordable and for a quick bite--keep walking. You may even get the chance to find a booth to yourself somewhere.

I dined at Cafe Chloe for restaurant week with a party of 5. The atmosphere and food were great. Most of us went with the 3 course special being offered through restaurant week and a few ordered separate entrees. The food was tasty and the decor very charming...the part that I didnt care for was the feeling of being rushed out. There was an overall feeling of getting us out the door after about 2 hours (mind you this was a 3 course meal). The other downside was the 25% gratuity added to the bill for a party of 5. I can understand having a party of 8 or more...but 5? 25% is pretty high, too. I tip well, and will certainly do so if the service is outstanding. This time we didnt have an option as it was tacked onto the bill. Overall, this is a great place to grab a quick bite, maybe a glass of wine, but not a place I would frequent for dinner or a long date.

I came for dinner without setting a reservation. We were sat right away but the they had two options for seating since we did not have a reservation, so I do recommend setting one. Once sat we order some drinks, and took a peak at the menu. Once drink arrived I ordered us the hand-chopped steak tartare. The was great, I loved the fact that they did not pre-mix in all the indigents, or even beat the egg yolk in. We mixed in just the right amount of indigents, and then I asked for more bread to finish off the plate. After this I ordered pommes frites moules. Which were great, the sauce was just right amount of butter, wine, and garlic. This place was a great experience with an amazing staff and I will be coming back for more.

We look for exceptional food whenever we travel. Weve visited San Diego every year for an August conference. Were not overly impressed with the quality of food in the Gaslamp district. Yes, the food is good, but its usually not outstanding. Our brunch at Cafe Chloe was a refreshing exception. Stephanie greeted us and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. She knew the menu well and answered our questions, allowing us to choose wisely. The morning rolls were exceptional. Our croque madame were cooked to perfection with delectable flavors. We will be back for dinner before we leave.

I should preface that I eat out a lot and have easily gone to over 200 different restaurants around town. I even keep my own "zagat" guide in an excel spreadsheet. I love this place. Its my most favorite restaurant downtown. The food is excellent and Ive never ever had a bad item from here, literally. My go to entrees are the steak frites or moules frites, every single one of the appetizers are delish and you really cant go wrong with any of them but my go to one is the one with the bacon, I forget what its called but Im a bacon lover so that was easy.
