I visited late on a stormy evening with my family. After a drive up from Silicon Valley and over the Golden Gate Bridge, all we could think about was getting to the Pelican Inn and tucking in to a plate of Fish and Chips. As the rain persisted and the traffic slowed, thoughts turned to a "plan B" if we didn’t make it to the pub on before they stopped serving food. After heading down the dark and winding road towards Muir Beach, we spotted the welcoming sign to the Pelican Inn. Once inside, the atmosphere was cosy and inviting, felt like it could have been your favourite country pub back home, with darts board and rustic beams. We dispensed plan B and promptly ordered 5 lots of Fish and Chips from the simple but complete menu. Hospitality was really friendly and accommodating. Food arrived and wow - we all really enjoyed it. The batter on the fish was light and crumbly, not at all stodgy or greasy like a typical fish & chip shop in the UK. Chips were also interesting - crispy with some skin left on. Really complimented the fish. Would definitely visit again.

I didnt actually eat here, because we were late for our reservation. Ive been longing to go here for forever, and as you drive into the property, it lives up to all expectations - super quaint, beckoning you in with the promise of warmth and hearty food. The problem though was that many others wanted to dine here - groups and couples were waiting, while strolling on the lawn, sitting on the lawn, standing in the entrance, and standing in the bar. There was no visible wait system - nobody to greet you, and no list to write your name on. We quickly realized it did not look promising, especially with baby in tow. I vowed to come back, with reservations, and promptness sans baby, however you have to take windy highway 1 to get here. I managed to survive for the ride there, but driving back down so shortly after meant a vomit bag made an appearance. In summary, make reservations, be on time for said reservations, and bring a vomit bag if you get sick easily.

We had a charming lunch at Pelican Inn 20 years ago and had looked forward to staying overnight. Our two nights were a waste of money Eat in the restaurant for lunch or dinner, if you get a table by the fireplace. The food is mediocre, but the ambiance is really quite charming. BUT DO NOT STAY OVERNIGHT! Front desk clerk was surly, not at all welcoming or inviting. The room was tiny, none too clean. The bed was uncomfortable, bathroom just downright yucky. The amenities consisted of a tiny shampoo, conditioner and lotion. How this place is in some of the reviews its in is a mystery. It is NOT luxe by any stretch. The only bright spot was the understaffed (sort of frantic but friendly) servers. Management was non-existant. The morning we left no one showed up by 8:30 to serve the included breakfast (served 8 - 10).

Spent one and had dinner. The staff was great. However the food was the most overpriced and poorly prepared Ive had in years. Had the chicken which was very dry and amounted to a small childs portion while my wife had salmon which didnt fair any better. People sitting with us out in the covered patio (because the main dining room had been allowed to be taken over by a loud group forcing the overnight guests to leave) had fish and chips which they said was very disappointing. Another guest said that the Beef Wellington was not worth the price either nor as good as he remembered from earlier stays. The septic truck pumping out the sewer under our window in the morning pretty much destroyed what ambiance was left of the old inn. I would not recommend this place for anything other than a beer in the afternoon.

Went there for lunch with 10 other people. Food is snack fair not dinner quality. Everyone ordered, all received their entry but me. After ten minutes, I went to the bar and inquired about my order and was told it was coming. Waited until my friends were almost finished and went the the kitchen and asked again, and was told it was coming. Five minutes later, the waiter appeared and told me the kitchen was out of what I had ordered. My complaint is that I should have been informed up front and not had to wait. I had to order something else off the menu and was told I wouldnt be charged, my friends got to wait and watch me eat. Bottom line, its an okay place with old English pub atmosphere, go for drinks, wine and beer only, and maybe a nibble. Dont go hungry or you will be disappointed.

As a hotel, the inn is quaint and in a great location but its lacking in customer service. There was no formal reception, the waitstaff always looked overworked, and the small bar (the only hangout within miles) was usually unattended as the bartender was constantly running inside and out to serve drinks and food. After waiting 20 minutes unsuccessfully to try to order a drink, I approached someone and before I could say anything was told abruptly they are checking on my food. I hadnt even ordered anything yet. Sadly, the drive back to town is also around 20-30 minutes, so they have a captive audience. It might be a nice place to drop by after a hike at Muir Woods, but I really cannot recommend it as a place to stay and relax.

I cant speak for the restaurant, but the pub here is a must-stop on my way back from occasional visits to Point Reyes. I dont know what it is ... the pub is tiny, often busy, the beer selection is "OK," the floor is uneven, its ridiculous to think anyone could actually use the dart board ... and yet its awesome. There is quite decent pub grub comfort food which is stellar if its one of those drizzly days. The handful of beers are fine. The atmosphere is cozy and friendly. On a nice day the lawn is filled with people enjoying the sun. Its relaxing and a wonderful place to go "ahhhhh." The only caveat is that the inn is a popular venue for events (like weddings), so it wont always be open as you drive by.

Made the mistake of going on Xmas day. Long story short, waited around an hour for a take-out order only to find out they hadnt put it in. Got a refund but no real apology. Then I asked if they could at least whip up a quick sandwich and the server said not really, the kitchen is really backed-up. The bartender made it seem like I should be thankful they were open on Xmas. Other patrons were having a horrible ordeal. The couple in front of me were waiting 20 minutes just to see the host. Owners: if you cant staff up on a holiday then dont open. Yes Im sure you raked in a lot of money that day but you also upset a lot of people. I know I and all those people will never be back.

Updated review (April 2016): My then-boyfriend proposed to me at the Pelican in July 2015, and we just got married there a few days ago! It was so great. All the staff, the food, the ambiance, everything was just lovely and elegant. All the guests had a great time eating, drinking, and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. Whether you have a big event planned, or are just stopping in for lunch, the Pelican Inn is a great experience. And wow the breakfast buffet is so good!! First review (Fall 2013): Wonderful place. My boyfriend and I stopped here during a long hike this past summer, and had an incredibly glorious lunch. Cant wait to go there again next month.
