Yet another one of those places that I want to love but it is just not quite right. We went for breakfast one morning as Kay was craving eggs. She had eggs, bacon, and beans. I had the Vegan Ranchero; tofu shaped like flowers, beans, and tortillas. I also ordered orange juice and Kay had a coffee. They brought out two coffees (I cannot have caffeine) so Kay immediately grabbed them both and started loading them up with sugar (which she had to ask for). She also got a refill on her coffees later. She didnt like the bacon but thats because it wasnt what she expected (what we call bacon in the UK is more like ham in the US and she didnt realise this) but loved the eggs. She also left most of the beans because, again, not what she expected. Mine had a nice kick to it. I liked the beans and tortillas. Did not really like the texture of the tofu. It was a bit too much like egg for my vegan brain to cope with first thing in the morning. There was a nice piece of avocado but no soy cheese or salsa as the menu had stated. Whatever. Service was OK. One of the guys was very cute which always helps. It was also quiet with only two other customers although someone kept standing in the doorway and shouting in. Evidently the staff knew him but it was totally annoying. I absolutely loved the decor and music. This is how diners should be. When we both arrived and left, there were lots of homeless people milling around but they didnt bother us at all. I guess Kays mini skirt distracted them... I went straight back to my hotel and threw up. I guess my vegan stomach was also a little confused by the tofu... I was so ill that I was not brave enough to go back. Maybe I will in the future...

Yum!! After seeing Nickel Diner on Diners. Drive-Ins and Dives AGES ago, its always been on my list to try, I just never got around to trying it until now! We came on a Sunday afternoon around 2:30pm and there was still a 10-15 minute wait, which was fine with us. FOOD: - duck & cluck - mashed potatoes, sauteed greens, duck & bacon sausage and two DEEP FRIED poached eggs!! Those eggs were DELICIOUS and really made me wonder how they made them. Very filling and the owner said it was the best thing on their menu (but Im sure she says that about everything :P) - 5th & main - spicy bbq pork hash with two poached eggs on top. A TON of pork! Super delicious, not that spicy at all and perfectly poached eggs. Again, very filling. - homemade apple pop tart - they were sold out of donuts, and the pop tart was recommended to us by the owner and damn, Im glad we listened. The filling was super good, not full of that syrupy goo that can be found in apple pies. We ate it with their homemade strawberry jam - double yum! SERVICE: Friendly and quick! A good number of staff on hand, our food came out pretty darn quickly. It was nice to speak with the owner and see that shes around the diner :) VENUE/PARKING: Smallish, with booths, tables, and share-able high tops. We declined to sit at the high top tables and we snagged a nice cozy corner booth! Bathrooms are single stall per gender and clean. Parking was a bit more of a problem, we couldnt find any free meters, so we just parked in one of the lots nearby. Would definitely come back! Just not at peak times :)

Mmmm nom nom nom. Just had the fifth and main. Its spicy bbq pork on potatoes with two poached eggs. Way too much meat. Needed more potatoes or some toast to offset. Maybe even some tortillas or rice, I know its so Asian of me. I know, usually its the other way around. Lol It gets pretty packed during meal times. You have your choice of street parking and walking there. Theres not to many spaces to park. Ive forgone this place for food or dessert because theres no parking on Main and I wasnt about to search for parking. D Nickel Diner is located in between Sixth and Fifth on Main St in Downtown Los Angeles. They do breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have some awesome desserts. My favorite was the red velvet cake. The red velvet donut is next on my list. Too bad they were out that afternoon. However, when I told the cashier/owner, she said I can call in right before and they can hold one for me before I arrive. YES!!!!! That is some customer service. Ive only tried the bacon maple glazed donut. Its a little meh to me, but to each their own. I have some friends that LOVED it.

In LA working for the week and had remembered seeing this place featured on the Food Network. I came a long way to check this place out and I was quite satisfied with my experience. I guess some could be put off by the location and the street people gathered near the entrance. And if you can not be social you may want to request seating in the center since the sides of the building amount to long community seating. And yes I guess you could even say the place is old and feels a bit dank but I just enjoyed the place for what it is and enjoyed some very good food. I loved that they served Brussel sprouts with the Catfish and Corn-cakes dish. The Smack and Cheese was also damn good. I liked the Bacon Donuts and the homemade Pop Tarts. I also ordered a Pulled Pork Sandwich and the Chocolate Peanut butter cake to go and had those the next day at my hotel. Life is short so enjoy it for what it is and I for one appreciate the hard work the owners are putting in to offer a different experience and creative food offerings. I will be back.

I havent really traveled the world. Trying exquisite cuisines. But I have traveled quite extensively throughout the United States and Canada. And I must say, this may be some of the best food Ive ever tasted. Never had anything quite like it. Delicious and unique. Had the Catfish with Corn Cakes & Pecan Sauce with Brussel Sprouts Hash. AMAZING!!! Also had a bowl of Monicas Chicken Pozole. Best soup Ive ever had. And soups are some of my favorite foods. Had an assortment of pastries for desert. Not great. Just ok. Homemade Pop Tarts were good. No disrespect to the baker. Im just not a connoisseur of baked deserts. Although, I have had some delicious pastries at Canters. Place could use a little remodeling as far as ambiance. But overall, a very pleasurable dining experience. Id eat here AT LEAST once a week if I lived in LA.
