My friend and I had heard good things about Zen Toro, so we thought we would give it a try. We were seated right away, as they were not busy. It was a good 10 minutes after we put our menus down before our order was taken. We only ordered three sushi rolls. It took 45 minutes before only SOME of our food arrived. We ate the two rolls that arrived then sat for another 20 minutes before the server came and said they were still working on our third roll. We told her to cancel it and to give us a check. We then waited ANOTHER 15 minutes before she brought us the check. When we asked the manager, we were told the manager was not there but the owner was. When we asked if we could talk to him, were told we could not because he was making sushi. Talk about horrible service and business practice. Granted the food we got was good and the fish was fresh. However, the portions were very small for the price we paid.

One of the higher quality Japanese options in Downtown Davis, Zen Toro is a quiet but classy Davis institution. It seems hidden as it is in a basement area, but it has a very relaxing "zen" like ambiance that serves a variety of good Japanese cuisine. I heard that one of the chefs used to be renown in San Francisco but moved to Davis for the small town environment. I recommend coming here for lunch, as the options are pretty much the same as dinner except cheaper. Ive had the poke, sukiyaki hotpot, chicken udon with sashimi, and everything was good! The poke had good flavor but was nice and refreshing, pairing with their well-cooked sushi rice. I had a hotpot at dinner which came with an assortment of meat and vegetables and it was savory and soul-warming. The udon combos at lunch are a good deal and come with a lot of food that is very satisfying.

Portion size was very good for the lunch special (usually super small at japanese restaurants). However, watch out if you are going solo because they have a 15 dollar cc minimum that is only posted at the front. Instead of most places that will charge you like 50 cents if under, they will try to get you to buy more food (luckily they let me charge a smaller amount "this time" - thanks for the privilege of letting me pay you, how generous). Dont come here if you are by yourself and live in the modern world (ie rarely carry cash). I would have become a regular customer if they didnt try to guilt me into buying more food at the end of the meal since it was pretty decent until then, now Ill never come back.

Zen Toro is my favorite Japanese restaurant, and I dine here as often as affordable. The portions of fish are generous and beautifully laid out. The specials are varied and whatever is on the specials list is always trying. The atmosphere is friendly and the restaurant itself is very comfortable: impeccable, yet modest. The owner/head chef Masa was the head chef at a French restaurant and is especially attuned to what gems of Japanese cuisine can be pleasing to the western palate. Davis is lucky to have him.

I am a long time loyal customer to this restaurant. Let me tell you guys one thing: I love good food. Not only is the food good, its affordable for a Japanese restaurant and has a very diverse menu. I recommend, if you like raw fish to get the zen toro chirashi. There is an abundance of seafood with a great price. The Ramen is top notch too and is a great dish to eat for lunch on the go.

Nice Japanese place if you have the ability to grab reservations. Without them you will have a very large wait time on the weekends if you have a party of four or more. The sake selection is ample, good selection of sushi and friendly staff. Recommend if you are looking for a group sushi place in Davis. Atmosphere 4/5 Food 4/5 Service 4/5

Love this place. Everything Ive had here has been fantastic. Its always clean, the staff is friendly and professional, and all the food is great. Definitely worth the price and better than any of the numerous sushi restaurants Ive tried in Davis. Just thinking about this place makes me immediately want to go back.

Every time I go here the service is amazing. I have a group of friends with a number of food restrictions and they are incredibly helpful and accommodating. The food itself is also amazing and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. Definitely my favorite Japanese place in Davis.

Zen Toro not only has really good fish, but the sushi chefs are artists. Their rolls are beautifully made and taste delicious. Theyre a bit pricer than some of the other sushi joints in Davis, but worth every penny.

Best Sushi in Davis. All around excellent Japanese and Sushi bistro. Great service and better food, especially at lunch, be careful because its hard to get a table on busy nights during the school year.

The staff was very nice. The menu had a good amount of variety as long as you are not a vegetarian. I would have liked to see some more non-meat sushi. The fried potatoe dumplings were quite a treat.

Do you like sauce or sushi? If said sauce, this is your joint. Tried an assortment of rolls, maybe we didnt order right. But, it wasnt great. Id go elsewhere for the money (like 200 yds south).

Best and most authentic Japanese food you can find in Davis. Ive moved away for over a year now and Im dying to go back just to go there. Not the biggest portions, but quality over quantity!

Teriyaki beef was too chewy to eat. They either used the wrong cut or cut it wrong. Everything else is good and you get a lot of it. The karaage and curry rice is really good.

Service is slow, wrong orders both times I went. Crowded, wait staff kept bumping us it was so packed in. Food portions small for price and presentation of sushi is poor.

Some of the best sushi in Davis! Can be a little pricey however. If you go to Zen Toro you really do have to get the sushi though, it outshines everything else.

Place has a good atmosphere and good food. However, their prices are not that far from Mikuni but personally I believe Mikuni has better quality sushi.

My wife and I eat there every week or so. We love their udon, and their sushi is the best in Davis, hands down. Friendly stuff and owners.

Our waitress did not put in one of our party members order in and gave us the wrong drinks. Good food, but the service needs to be better.
