This South Indian restaurant has the same owner as Saffron down in San Carlos. However, the vibe in Rasa is much more modern and stylish than Saffron. The ambience, for one thing, feels much more like Dosa in SF as opposed to a traditional Indian restaurant. The food is also more modern, with a hint of fusion here and there. (They have sake cocktails and Devils Canyon beer on tap!) I found the crisp idli chaat super addicting, with its perfectly balanced blend of crisp mini idlis (which are expertly fermented), crunchy murmura, onions, cilantro, and tamarind chutney. I wanted to get either of the cod dishes as my main course, but they were out of both, so that was a little disappointing. I ordered the shrimp curry instead. Overall, the main courses were slightly less impressive than the appetizer we had just eaten. The shrimp curry was good, but it came in a bowl with just a side of white rice so it looked a little bare. Presentation could have been more appealing. Also, my Indian companion found it odd that potatoes had been mixed into the batter of the utthappam he had ordered. He said he had never had one made that way before. Maybe it was a fusion twist, but he would have liked the option to have it without the potatoes. Nevertheless, we loved this place and will definitely be back. I hope to be able to try the crusted cod next time because it sounded really good. Also, our server was super nice!

Yesterday was second time at Rasa in the last 3 months. Scratch that, 3rd time to be honest, but the last time I was there the city was facing a power outage so I had to go back without eating my favorite Bombay sliders. Rasa is probably the best contemporary Indian food Ive had in the bay area. On the scale of Authentic to contemporary, I think they closer to Authentic compared to other famous Indian restaurants in the US like Indian accent in NYC. Rasas food is absolutely delicious. In the appetizers, we love the Bombay slider, the crispy idly chaat and the Mangalore fried chicken. In the mains, weve had the Basil dosa and the two fish items (halibut) and another kerala styled curry. In the deserts, I cannot choose between the Cardamom brulee and the Kaapi Affagato. This place is definitely my favorite contemporary Indian restaurant in the US and I hope they win more Michelin stars.

The food was interesting and inventive at times, but what killed our experience was the staff. Unfortunately the new manager interrupted our meal over 4 times to lecture us about his life and his daughter, and though we were polite in responding, it was upsetting, and unbecoming of a restaurant that has a Michelin star. Our server couldnt have cared less about our orders while he was taking them, and it wasnt even a polite nonchalance. The other wait staff were watching the Warriors game on a phone at the bar, and their exclamations were distracting.. we wanted to see the game too, but were planning on watching it later! We found out the score during dinner anyway. Came here for a birthday dinner for my mother, and she noticed the interruptions and behavior of the staff too, which was embarrassing and disappointing. It felt more like a pub than a restaurant because of the staff!

Highly overrated. Disclaimer: we tried only vegetarian dishes The food is just too overrated and highly priced. No different than a regular decent Indian restaurant. The ambience is just like any decent restaurant like banana leaf or inchin bamboo.. nothing exceptional or out of the world. We tried the highly recommended Bombay sliders which was just 2 tiny vada pav.. not worth the $12 .. almost like any vada pav u can expect. Tried their sake-rita.. super dry and bland taste. Their uttappam was just standard one, sambar felt like made from powder.. and potato masala was just bland..homemade ones are better Cant believe its a Michelin star restaurant and we spent $100 for dinner for 2.. Will totally not recommend them. If you like food decorated like they show on tv.. then yes .. but if u like it to taste good too.. dont waste your money

I live in SF and I never come to Burlingame, but after trying the food at Rasa, I have definitely found a reason to come back again and again. I was excited to come here after the glowing recommendations from a friend; plus the Michelin star doesnt hurt either ;) I came here with a group of friends last week, and I highly recommend going in a group since it was a lot of fun and also gives a chance to try so many more dishes. Started with the sliders after seeing their high popularity on Yelp. Also had two dosas (to share) - the bigger one was 2 feet long! Heirloom beet salad. And lets not forget that classic butter chicken. And chocolate crémeux for dessert - rich and flavourful. It was all delicious and a very good way to end the week (after sitting down, the service was also friendly and efficient). Im only sorry I didnt take any pics!

I could not for the life of me decide what I wanted to eat. Everything sounded so good! According to the waiter though, I HAD TO at least get and order of Bombay Sliders if nothing else, so I did. It was really good - kick of spice, good sauce, but I didnt think it was a MUST GET. I got the Travancore Style Fish Moilee as my main dish and I thought that should have been a must get. The fish is cooked in a curry leave and steamed with some chilies and it was DELICIOUS. It was super tender, juicy, flavorful and melted in my mouth. It also came with rice and vegetables as well which was good. I also got one of their fruity drinks with the chili powder on the rim and it was really good. It was a good proportion of alcohol and mixer. Overall, its a nice, modern South Indian restaurant to come to if you feel like enjoying a classy meal.

The food was very flavorful and the ambiance was nice. The staff who took care of us were also very prompt and helpful. My issue is with the host at the entrance who got us seated. We were seated on the higher floor which turned out to be much warmer than the first floor. It was a really hot day (90+ F) and they dont have air conditioning. There have a couple of fans placed around which honestly arent enough. How difficult is it to get this addressed, by the end of our meal we were all sweating due to poor air circulation. This basically dinged my experience. When I casually mentioned it to the host before we left, the guy had an attitude. Instead of simply acknowledging the fact that they have an issue he mentioned that I go check outside. I was like what??? Poor customer service.

The food is beautifully served, and its truly delicious. Service was great. Dishes are on the smaller side, yet priced higher than one might expect for their size. Not beyond reason, but still. Somewhat of a shortage of vegan menu items (they did go out of their way to prepare the items for us without cream, yoghurt or butter) - I recommend the delicious wild mushroom uttapam, the very small but tasty fruit salad and the coconut veggie curry. There were no real vegan options for dessert. Acoustics were a bit on the louder side upstairs due to the low ceiling and number of tables in the space. Overall, we enjoyed the experience. 2 people without drinks, tiny salad, one starter item, one main menu item, $57 before a 20% tip which our server well deserved.
