The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because I think our food (or at least mine) would have been really good had it been warm. We were in Madison for a long weekend and had read some really good reviews of the breakfast at Marigold Kitchen and so decided to make this our last stop before heading home. We didnt realize that it was an order & pay, then well bring your food sort of situation, but that didnt bother us so much; the only real annoyance is getting your own coffee, because when there are a lot of people in line or waiting around for to go orders, it gets kind of crowded and hard to get to the drinks. It wasnt terribly busy when we came in, there were 4-5 open tables and lots of people left after we sat down. We waited at least 40 min for our food, though, and my boyfriends pancakes came without syrup, while I got a tiny little bit in the bottom of a cup. We asked the server who brought our food for some syrup, and then waited 10 min before she came back and said she had forgotten. She apologized and brought us some syrup. By this time, our food was cold; my boyfriend said his was cold when it came out, but I hadnt touched mine until we started eating, so I cant be sure about mine. We had luckily each ordered a side (an egg and some sausage) which were fine; the sausage was actually really good, though pricy at $4 for 3 links. I had the French toast which looked amazing and actually would have been delicious had it been hot. My boyfriend had the blueberry pancakes and said they were nothing to write home about (especially when cold). Overall disappointed this was the last thing we did in Madison; could have had good food served hot somewhere else.

If you havent eaten here yet, then stop what you are doing and get over there!!! We are in town for a wedding and to check out UW as I have been accepted to a PhD program there. We were blown away by the food, atmosphere, and service at Marigold Kitchen! It was raining and cold, but we made the short walk and we did not regret it. I ordered the bacon, spinach, tomato, and cream cheese omelette with potatoes and wheat toast. The omelette was the perfect consistency of fluffiness and flavor. I would never think to put cream cheese in an omelette, but it worked really well! My hubs ordered the blueberry pancakes with sausage. The texture, flavor, and density of the sausage was PERFECT. It tasted so fresh! The pancakes were divine and we nearly finished all of them. We ended up sharing our entrees and some fresh fruit. It was so fabulous that we asked to see the chef, Kristy, in order to compliment her! The potatoes are the best we have ever eaten. No kidding. In fact, my husband and I would come back to Madison just to eat here again. Its THAT good! The chef sent us away with two scones, which was super sweet, and I cant wait to eat one of them! My hubs will be lucky if he gets to eat the other one. ;-)

Tired and over-rated. My duck confit hash took a lot of effort to find any duck in it. The sausage soup had clearly been put together too quickly as the flavors hadnt simmered together and just tasted like all separate ingredients. The worst part was the service. My dining companions salad and soup were forgotten when my order was brought. Then, when they did bring it out, it was the wrong salad and no soup because I had an heirloom bloody and they made a heirloom salad instead. Finally, they got it all right but it was 15 minutes after my duck confit has had been brought out and was well cold. They basically shrugged their shoulders and said well all we can do is apologize. No, first you can ask me if youd like my entree made hotter Secondly, you can get it right the first time. Lastly, you can offer us some dessert or another drink for wasting so much of our time and being so blaise about it. There was plenty you could do; you just chose not to because you are on the capital and have a good rep (for now) and you have the arrogance of hipsters who have no idea that at some point it all isnt going to go well and your service failures are going to count for something.

DO NOT go to this restaurant if you actually want to be served food! What kind of restaurant cannot cope with and manage accordingly to handle the change from the breakfast to lunch menu? There is an entire 30 minute window between breakfast and lunch during which NO FOOD is made! I went in one morning for a late breakfast, was told that I could only order if I did so quickly because they werent serving breakfast for much longer. By the time I skimmed the menu and decided on a whim, the "waitress" told me that I would not be able to order anymore, that breakfast was over. I proceeded to ask for a lunch menu to which her reply was "well, yes I can give you a menu, but we are not serving lunch right now" well, how long until lunch? "We begin serving lunch at 11." It was 10:30. Instead she pointed me to the "food" (coconut macaroons and cookies??) and coffee drinks that are served in the meantime... That is NO way to run a business, and the snooty attitudes I received from several staff members during these exchanges all add up to lost business. Hope they enjoyed my back as I walked out the door to find somewhere else to eat.

After reading all of the great reviews on this place we tried it this morning. The food was great, but be aware that there is an unspoken rule that you must order prior to claiming a table or you will be rudely told to vacate the table until you have your number. After that you will wait (it was Saturday morning, but still) for a table and then wait longer for your food. All in all it took us about 1 1/2 hours. So plan some time. I would go, but understand the rule applies. There were several altercations between other customers and wait staff, not just us. It would really help if the owner would just post a sign stating the rule, then the wait staff would be relieved of the job and the customers wouldnt feel so attacked. The food is still fantastic, but if you are not a patient person, dont go.

Stopped by the Marigold Kitchen for breakfast at 10:25 am on a Friday. Was told by the women working the register that we had to order in the next min to get breakfast as they stop serving at 10:30 am. The women working the register then proceeded to walk away for 10 seconds. When she came back the cook working behind the register asked her if the people in line (3 small groups) knew that he wasn’t going to cook them breakfast. When she walked up to the register and asked us if we had decided, she replied that they did not serve breakfast anymore. We then asked for a lunch menu and she said that they do not make lunch until 11:00 am. We thanked her for all her “help” and departed. I will never dine at the Marigold Kitchen again.
