Awesome! Fantastic location and fantastic food for what it is. Better than the original Totem House. Thank you Red Mill for saving this building! The fish and chips are tasty and not greasy, as are the fried shrimp (although the dipping sauce is a little cloying). The burgers are great for the price, especially with their famous bacon. The caramelized onion burger is a good concept, but the onions arent caramelized enough to impart much extra flavor. Best to just go with the Bacon Cheeseburger. The milkshakes are a good consistency and the espresso is especially tasty, with little bits of espresso throughout. Parking is easier to come by than the original Red Mill location, but can be sketchy on busy days. The lines can be intimidating and finding a table can feel like a commando operation, but its worth it. And... you can always take it to go and have a picnic at the Locks across the street.

A (sad) Fish Story: My brother could afford any restaurant in town, but when visiting home he used to say, "Lets go to the Totem House for fish and chips!" It used to be the kind of place that would end up on one of those dive eatery TV shows the way Mikes Chili Parlor in Ballard did. Fast forward to the new owners, who INTENTIONALLY dont even try to match the old recipe! Its actually disrespectful to Ballard history to not offer it as a menu choice imo. So sad. I had a 2-piece yesterday, and the Gortons fish fillets in my freezer honestly taste better. The TH fish wasnt even kind of good. So two stars because the Totem House is not out of business, and Red Mill makes fantastic burgers, fries, and shakes. Order those by all means. Otherwise picture a fish inside a red circle, with a diagonal (red) slash through it.

I have dearly loved this place for years, always enjoying the full, heart, chowder that they served. It, and the original owning family, are long gone. The chowder is watery and totally unsatisfying now. Formerly handcrafted shakes now taste the same as McDonalds, and the old piquant slaw is now generic. I had hoped for an "old times sake" moment, and got a thin, annoyingly unsatisfying non-returnable experience. I am sure Seattles new crop of imported brogrammers will think otherwise, after all, theyre brogrammers. They think the Burn is about art. Oh, wait...

I have lived in Southren California for 46 years and In n out is our burger place to brag about. That was until trying this burger joint! The Verde Burger is one of the best burgers I have ever had, it has homemade roasted green Anaheim chilis and you get a taste of them with every bite. The onion rings are to die for!! Next trip I plan to have the fish & chips, I hear they are one of the best in town. By the way it is no longer a cash only establishment they now have a machine for credit cards and ATM. 5 star in my book! Will miss this place.

The best of both worlds: excellent burgers and fish and chips! When they announced that they were taking over Totem House years ago I was pretty excited. I had often imagined the Red Mill onion ring batter on fish, and here at Totem House they made it a reality. Red Mill burgers are still good, they have a lot of competition around town now but keep their niche. It is usually busy here, parking is difficult, and the tiny dinning area may be filled with loud kids kids. But if you need to grub down then it is all worth it!

Went with a friend to try this place out as it was our first time in Seattle, disappointing. My friend said it tastes like a Whopper from BK. I had the bacon deluxe with cheese and he had the deluxe with cheese. the patty was thin and didnt taste like freshly ground beef ,which is what i thought it was suppose to be, although big in size, it lacks in taste compared to In & out. I like the taste of 5 guys more. My favorite burger by far is still In & Out due to the taste and value.

There is a veil of hype surrounding this restaurant that I can respect, but I cannot support. They do not accept cards for payment, which is a large inconvenience and there is no other reason in this day and age than to make some kind of statement. I was not impressed by the quality + taste of the burger and fries, but the value was very good (larger than average, cheaper than average). The people running the place are genuine, but it really doesnt make up for the shortcomings.

For a Standard Burger No tomato and Fry it came to almost 9 dollars.. The Burger is delicious and larger. Fries a limp and large (a fry i like) I cannot complain really. The food was great.. 9 dollars great... ehh portions. Its what made America what it is today. Did i get the bang for my buck. I would say yes.. barely. They almost overstepped their bound luckily it was just delicious enough to forgot.. until now.

Totem House is an old fish and chip place that the proud, old school Seattlites from Red Mill rescued and refurbished. Get Red Mills delicious burgers - like the signature Verde. Nice veggie and turkey burgers too. Fish and chips are still here. Fabulous shakes round out the menu. After years of cash only, they now take cards!

Fish n Chips is where its at! You cant go wrong! Some of the best Ive had. Plenty of outside seating, but a relatively small/crowded interior. The place gets packed so Id advise going during odd eating hours. Wife said the burger she ate was good as well. Great place to eat before or after checking out the Ballard locks.

Totem house used to be a fish and chips place across from Locks, but is now part of Red Mill and has added their classic burgers and shakes to its repertoire. Burgers are tasty, the fish and chips is still there, and it remains a great place to get food to eat while watching ships pass through the locks in the summer.

very convenient if you are at the locks. Place is clean and offers better than normal fast food such as chowder and fish but prices are pretty high for what you get. Chowder is tasty but basically like a thin soup not what most consider chowder. Plus is that there is free parking which is hard to find.

Great spot, glad they have many vegetarian options for a burger joint. They have great food and good service, our order has been messed up a couple of times when we order to go for the whole family (leaving an item out) but they are happy to complete the order if we returned. Highly suggest going here!

Tried the Verde Burger and Deluxe Cheese Burger with my wife..theyre amazing..highly recommended. Fresh soft bread and great taste. Did not get to try the shake as they only take cash and we ran out of cash.. If they accept cards, it will increase their revenue a lot imo.

UPDATE: they now take plastic! (Welcome to the 21st century). The food has always been great, the service is friendly. Best fish and chips in Ballard. Its just nice to not have to go find an ATM before you order. Who knows, maybe theyll even get Android Pay someday!
