NEEDS "SERIOUS" RENOVATION (BUT) FOOD IS GOOD! This place use to be up North next door to the popular Kiku Tempura House until Kiku closed down in 2012 because of a fire. These 2 were the Top Rated cheap eats in town all priced at $5.99 at the time. For all you (frugal) UW students with a tight budget like myself, this is an Excellent place to to dine and save money. A ton of choices, large portions, and most priced Now at $6.99, still makes this a satisfying place to fulfill your appetite without hurting your wallet. The only problem is, BE PREPARED TO PAY CASH ONLY! Although they do have a cash machine that charges a fee of $2.50, try to avoid it!! It can add up to $9.50 for a $7 meal if you withdraw from their ATM. The Atmosphere may not be the greatest also! (Inside feels Gloomy, Ugly, Empty, faded, worn out 80s look), But the food sure taste good! So good you might have enough portions to save for later. Like I said, if you want lunch or dinner that will give you your "BANG FOR YOUR BUCKS" without hurting your wallet, then this is the place to go. Keep in mind though, since there is no waiter, your going to have to Self serve! That means getting up for napkins, forks, water, ect. Ill keep coming here as long as they keep their prices below $7. Id rate this 4 stars but the major Problems are: (1.) CASH ONLY! Sucks when your waiting in line, and then told to pay "cash only" when you finally reach the counter. The Owner needs to put a sign to warn us ahead of time to pay Cash Only! (2.) UPDATE OLD FADED FOOD PHOTOS AND SOME "SERIOUS" RENOVATION. The Owner needs to hire a Good Table Service worker, update food Photos on wall and do some "serious" renovations to the horrible floor tiles and bathrooms. (3.) NO ICE WATER. Most of us dont like drinking room temperature water. Can sombody PLEASE tell the owner to put ICE in the water dispenser for the Spicy hot meals to cool our mouths. That would be nice. (4.) SOME HAWAIIAN MUSIC IN BACK GROUND to lighten up the Atmosphere. All we here is the TV. Nice hawaiian music to escape the Seattle rainy weather outside would also be nice. ** UPDATE - 03/05/2016 Kiku was the best! Somehow they never relocated...... For those of you who are wondering what happen to the beloved KIKU TAMPURA HOUSE: On 10/16/2012, a fire in the kitchen of the Kiku Tempura House caused $30,000 worth of damage to it and two other nearby restaurants. The Hawaii BBQ Restaurant (5016 University Way NE) and the Spice Rack Tapas Bar and Grill (5014 University Way NE) were also closed due to the blaze. - Daily of the University of Washington

I have been a huge fan of this restaurant for a long time, about 10 years now, and I will be for many more. As others have said, it may be in need of some renovations, but the menu is unbelievable for the price you pay. They offer I believe 30 or 40 combo options from everything from soups to seafood, steamed veggies, tofu, amazing fried rice, and several meat varieties. Im not sure what they put in their teriyaki style sauce, but it seriously may be the best dipping sauce I have ever had and it compliments any meal on the menu. I always leave full, happy, and with leftovers to enjoy again later! I would reccomend this place to anyone wanting to know where a great place to eat is,and have many times :)hope they stay open for many years to come, I wish good things for this place and the kind man who has always been at the front end..see you again soon!

If youre looking for a place with cheap eats and a large variety, you will appreciate Hawaii BBQ. I had their chicken katsu and teriyaki plate, and it was excellent. The only drawback is that the interior isnt the nicest Ive seen. However, the service was great, and I do recommend it. They only accept cash here, but there was an ATM machine there for anyone with debit cards.

I love the breakfast here. Ive only been here a couple of times for breakfast and I always get the Komais Big Breakfast. It includes Corned Beef Hash, 2 Spam, 2 Portuguese Sausage, 2 Vienna Sausage, 2 Eggs, 2 Scoops Rice and Hawaiian Bread. Cooked perfectly and not oily. Bread is nicely toasted and soft. The food and service are great!

Chill Island vibe, friendly staff, fast service, mouthwatering cuisine. I would eat here every day if I could. They catered my graduation party for a great deal and we had MOUNTAINS of food. Its cash only, but I always drop my change in the tip jar. I love this place with all my heart. I saw this only had 4.5 stars and nearly cried.

Nice people here. Cash only. The food is pretty decent. It all tastes pretty similar so they must use the same oil for pretty much everything. A little fast foody, but it does have great portions at low prices and offers decent quality vs other places on the Ave. doesnt hurt my stomach!

Far from UWs campus, at least in my opinion, but it is so worth it. A lot of things to choose from, and it may look a bit janky, but whatever you choose itll be bomb no doubt. Great bang for your buck. Very flavorful and satisfying.

I was excited because the menu sounded good and prices were decent, but unfortunately the quality was not so good. The worst part is that the utensils are self-serve and were not clean. I picked up a spoon with food stuck to it.

No need to wear a suit, but this is a great place. Very friendly owner cares a lot about the restaurant, the food is a great value and wonderfully large portions, and after eating, you feel the very definition of food coma.

This is one of my favorite restaurants on the Ave. The owner is funny and the food is delicious. I always stop here if Im in the area. I recommend the pineapple chicken.

This was one of my other favorite places to go when I lived in Seattle. The food is fast, good and cheap. This is probably the best Hawaiian BBQ youll find in this area.

Great older gentleman who I assume was the owner greeted me. Very friendly. Good food too, with generous portions. Dirty washroom though and kind of run down.

The dish I got was really weird... I enjoyed it nonetheless. Received little to no table service. Although the food was good, I probably wouldnt go again.

So much food. But so little service. I had to come grab it from the counter when all the owner had to do was walk 3 steps to deliver it.

This place has the largest amount of quality food for the cheapest prices. The only downside is the this place is cash only.
