As a BBQ junkie, Im surprised it took me so long to finally try this place. Once I did, I was a bit underwhelmed. The spot is a pretty cool one in a decent location. They also have a pretty extensive menu, but I finally settled on brisket and ribs with collared greens and baked beans. For the brisket, I was quite underwhelmed. It really didnt have much flavor, and certainly lacked a crusty "bark" on the outside. If anything, the bark was sort of soggy, as if the brisket had been sitting in some sort of a sealed container getting its steam room on. If you want brisket, 4505 is a WAY better option here. The ribs, on the other hand, were actually really awesome. Super flavorful and had a good chew to them. Would definitely come back for an order of those. Both sides were just okay. Neither had a tremendous amount of flavor, but I wasnt too offended by that either. Would have loved to try the Mac and cheese, though, as that looked to be pretty delicious. As for the staff there, they were super friendly and willing to deal with my questions about what I should try. They also had a great selection of beers on tap, and quite a few TVs for if you wanted to catch a game there.

Ridiculously overpriced for what was mediocre food. They ran out of most their meat and only had chicken and brisket by the time I ordered, which was 2 hours before they closed. Both chicken and brisket were cooked well, but flavorless. BBQ sauce is needed. The brisket they gave me was easily %50 fat. I understand brisket has a lot of fat, but I dont want it to be half my meal. Sauce was good. Baked beans were pretty good. Collard greens decent in taste, but soggy. Overall the food could use some big improvements, but isnt bad. What made the experience bad was the price. The meal above and a soda cost me $23. Sodas alone are $4. I know this is SF, but staying in business will be very hard with those prices and less expensive options nearby. I will say that the staff was very sweet and friendly.

Chef David does it again! Ive been a local of the Fillmore Jazz District for years and came here on a Sunday afternoon, and Black Bark BBQ is EXACTLY what the neighborhoods been looking for -- an urban, friendly environment where you can kick back for lunch or a glass of wine. The 5+ flat screen TVs are also a huge plus for groups. Black Bark has to be the best bbq in the city by far, quality and portions as just right. And I love that the options include chicken, pork, beef, and some salads. The beef brisket is incredible!! I generally dont buy brisket for fear of dryness, but the Black Bark brisket just melts in your mouth. Ive been a huge fan of the Chefs since eating at his fine dining restaurant 1300 on Fillmore across the street. Cant wait to keep coming back!

I am not a BBQ fan. I really enjoy this place. The food is wonderful, drink selection great, including real root beer and other non-alcoholic beverages and the atmosphere is very social. The community table is great for small groups to meet others or very large groups to revel in the celebration of smoky goodness. I really enjoy seeing the owner mingling with his guests, much like we were eating in his dining room at home. If you are lucky, you can get a whaft of the fire and go home smelling like a campfire! I think SMORES are the next thing to add to the menu. Three MUNI lines serve BBBQ, 22 at front door, 31, across the street, and 38 Geary, 2 blocks away. There are also parking garages quite close.

Immediately started on a bad slate, because the website say 12 for the meal, the menu when you get there 12.50, and then when they ring you up its 13 plus 1 Im tax. Food was good and tasted slightly smokey. Greens, sweet fries, and pulled pork. Sauce was unique, since the BBQ tasted like molasses. Smoke taste in the pork was so subtle, it could have been better. Not very big portions either, however it did disappear into my mouth rather quickly. Btw, nothing black bark about pulled pork, not even crunchy fallout from the skin of the smoked pig. Cant say Ill come back, less the other 3 BBQ places bombing. Cheers!

While I only had the deep fried bread pudding (!!! YUM !!!), my two friends both ordered the two meat plate, which was a ton of meat and looked delicious. They had all the types of sauces you could want at the table. On top of it all, it was a reasonable price and the staff were super friendly. Even though its an order at the counter place, they checked on us to make sure we were all good. I even got some extra of the whiskey caramel sauce that went with the bread pudding when I mentioned how good it was to the server. I cant wait to go back and try the BBQ!

Another average BBQ joint in SF. I think its no better, no worse than the others, but nothing that blew me away. Favorite dish was definitely brisket. It was really nicely seasoned, not overly peppery but pastrami-like flavoring on the edges. Super tender, super fatty, fell apart instantly, all the best things you look for with brisket. The chicken was good, but the brisket was better. The potato salad was very eggy with light hints of cinnamon. It was interesting, but I didnt love it. Mac and cheese was super liquidy. Ill be back for the brisket.

Pretty pricey for a platter. Disappointed the food came out lukewarm rather than piping hot. Tried the place as it was rated #1 in California on Thrillest but I have another go to spot for bbq. Chef?/owner? Is from the south, Texas, and I dont deny it is tasty, but a little overboard on the salty rub on the ribs with no bland starch to balance it. Corn bread was good. Spiced sweet potatoe fries were my favorite. Mac n cheese was not for me, it was chewy. $4 corn (2 individually wrapped halves enough for two people) was okay.

I got an order of saugage links and a side of mac & cheese. My order had five sliced pieces of a link with three whole pieces of sweet pickled okra. My side dish was tasty but looked like was made with some velveeta cheese. This neighborhood has been in serious need of a bbq spot but this isnt it. The place looks nice but I want to pay for bbq that makes you want to come back for more. I was really dissapointed with the food and the servings.

So I really wanted to like this place. Service was good. Food: The brisket was great, I recommend it. But the chicken sausage was lackluster, additionally, the sides: mac and cheese and yams, were less than desirable. I was kind of confused with the taste of both items, as the both tasted much different than any other place i have had those items. Facility: Pretty dope restaurant located in a nice area.

It isnt a sit-down place so dont expect that kind of experience. You actually wait in line and order the meal rather than sit down with a menu. The variations of sauces at the table were the highlight of the meal, the sandwich was a little colder than I would have liked. Great beer selection, also I had the mac and cheese and collard greens sides which were also well flavored.
