We visited Spencer Devon Brewing with few expectations. All we wanted was a place to grab lunch and a beer. From the time we were seated to the time we left, there was no element of our visit we were not impressed with. The food was excellent, and the beer selection was wide enough to accentuate just about anything on the menu. I ordered the basic cheeseburger with goat cheese and fries. I substituted the mustard with the sriracha aioli to complement the goat cheese. It was amazing. The burgers here are served pink or no-pink. I ordered no-pink, but in retrospect I would order pink, as mine was a bit overdone (some people like them this way, though.) With my burger and fries I had the Irish Stout (IBU 35, 4.5% abv). I loved the rich beer with the spicy and pungent combination of sriracha and goat cheese. The fries were a complete surprise. I was expecting standard tavern fries - somewhat soggy and salted, but they came out very crisp and nicely seasoned. My partner ordered the corned beef sandwich with a salad, and some of the A. Smith Bowman Bourbon. The bourbon was fragrant and warm with vanilla and lots of oak on the finish; definitely recommended. The corned beef itself was exceptional - tender and savory. The side salad was large and the housemade dressing was fantastic. The salad was good, if rather plain, as the only additives to the field greens were diced tomatoes and onions, neither of which my partner eats. My partner had the Sunken Road Belgian Blonde (IBU 23, 5.5% abv) with the corned beef, which was a bit much for the savory meat - I finished the beer. The service was very attentive and prompt. Our waitress (unfortunately, I cant remember her name) made sure our water glasses were filled and offered helpful advice on menu items and content of several dishes and sauces. The details here are what really made the visit worthwhile. From the house ketchup (which was very tasty and unlike bottled ketchup) to the taste of the Blonde beer offered to see if my partner would like it with the meal, everything was customer-focused and high-quality. The price for the meal was a bit higher than our usual fare, but the quality far exceeded the increase in price. I will certainly return. TL;DR - Great food, drinks to match, service is good, but you pay a bit more for the higher quality.

After visiting the battlefield, I decided to park by the river and walk to this place that was recommended by a couple of locals. The service is very slow, even during an early weekday when it was not busy at all. There is a good selection of micro brews and they provide you with some good samples if youre not sure what you want. The decor of the restaurant is contemporary and appealing with the brewery vats right behind the bar. I had a bacon cheeseburger and fries for lunch and it was very disappointing. The bacon was unlike anything I have had on a burger. It was some type of bacon hash or paste that was like something out of a can. The bacon paste was placed on the very bottom of the burger, and it soaked into the roll. The burger selection is limited, and the burgers as well as other items on the menu are a bit too cute and snobby. Sometimes classics are the best and creative ways of mixing ingredients do not always work. Trust me, thick slices of real bacon will beat out bacon paste anytime! The slow service and poor burger left me with a disappointing experience overall.

Spencer Devon is a wonderful addition to the landscape of premium quality brewing; But, it is far more than a superior brewing establishment. The food is absolutely amazing, the staff are knowledgeable, friendly and professional, the atmosphere is warm and comfortable - and the Proprietors are almost always on-hand to ensure that the seamless integration of superior food and drink is delivered in such an enjoyable atmosphere. Their dedication to sourcing as much as they can locally, and overall efforts at community engagement (hosting fundraisers and other events) make this an excellent establishment. My opinion is that the burger at Spencer Devon - processed in-house from a farm only about 20 miles away - is hands down the best in Fredericksburg. The other culinary offerings are an eclectic and interesting mix of Americana, and the menu changes periodically to ensure that seasonal items available locally can be incorporated into their featured offerings. No, I dont work for the Brewing establishment, but I am regular patron - and hope to see you there!

Went there for dinner with a colleague in late August 2016. Its a cool modernesque brewpub. Had dinner at the bar. The Raspberry Lager was good - the northern pale ale undrinkable - the pilsner perfectly acceptable. One positive: they sell 10 ounce beers which is important on a weeknight. Food wise - good presentation -- so-so quality. I had the grilled cheese, my dining companion had a burger. Meh. Not sure about the professionalism of the service. While our bartender was perfectly polite, she had to look up a recipe for a craft cocktail on their menu. That stands out in the day and age of mixologists - the kind you see at the Grey in Savannah. It was also a so-so drink. Everywhere you look, theres a brewpub opening in small town America. Its easy to assume theyre all good because a brewmaster with tattoos and a scruffy yet lovingly manicured beard brews the beer on premise and writes romance descriptions that make you want to drink it. Unfortunately, many struggle to measure up these lofty standards. Such is the case with Spencer Devon Brewing.

Stopped in Saturday for dinner cant even review the food because we didnt get that far. The host greeted us and let us know that there was a 40 minute wait for 5 adults and a toddler. There were 3 empty tables in the restaurant. After pointing that out to her, she told us that if we didnt want to wait she could squeeze us into a table meant for 4 people - we obliged because we were starving. It took the server 10 minutes to greet us - I had to ask for the kids menu twice and another 20 minutes to receive the beers we ordered all while sitting right next to a 2 top table that sat complete vacant while the 6 of us were overflowing at a table meant for 4 (it didnt dawn on anyone to push the tables together). After 30 minutes of sitting there and still not being asked for our dinner order we paid for our couple of beers and left. (although we received our check in lightening speed) Im sure this place is great once you receive your food but the service is absolutely terrible. Unfortunately thats a deal breaker when I go out to eat.

We stopped in on a Sunday, for brunch. The atmosphere felt a little chilly at first, but that was more than made up for by the warm and friendly attitude of our server, whose name I unfortunately dont remember! She was awesome, making accurate and personal recommendations based on our preferences. Our mimosas were prompt and pleasantly tart. I had a catfish po boy, with the salt-and-pepper coating-- in retrospect I wish Id gone with the blackened finish, as I was hankering for something spicier, but the catfish was tender and savory, and locally caught in the Rappahannock. My companion had croissant french toast, spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar, which was slightly crunchy on the outside and tender and almost custardy inside. Perfect! Ill have to go back and try their beers sometime, since the "table display thing" made them sound so delicious. Definitely recommend.
