This is my first local guides review, and being a local in Fredericksburg for almost fourteen years has been interesting. Sure, its Americas hotspot for history buffs, but I just go downtown for the food. Case in point, FOODĒ. Located on 1006 Caroline St C / D, Fredericksburg, VA, I arrived there last Saturday for the very first time for a delicious brunch. Sporadic about their opening times depending on what day it is, I specifically came for a birthday brunch. Of course my birthday was at this time a week and a half ago but it didnt matter. Today I, along with my mother of whom was treating, would be dining on the award-winning dish of 2015 for Virginia: chicken and waffles! I wanted to be seated quickly, as I observed on the menu (to which an employee handed to patrons of whom waited in line outside the restaurant) that what I wanted to order was in limited quantity. Drizzled with pure maple syrup, the chicken was thick, succulent and tender as the waffles were quite fluffy, complementing the poultry quite excellently and washing it down with carrot and orange juice straight from a Mason jar simply made the whole ordeal an unforgettable brunch at that. The restaurant is cumbersome within, albeit its modern and hip in atmosphere, and I still have yet to taste some of their more outstanding food. FOODĒ is truly "gourmet for the rest of us", and as an aspiring epicure of all things quality, I am hoping to return, knowing they will not disappoint after the delectable and weighty dish that is chicken and waffles. IHOP offers the same thing on their menu, but has nothing on this serving of satisfactory soul food!

Oh boy... What happened to the FoodE I use to eat at??? Went to the new location for the first time for restaurant week was highly disappointed... The seating was very slow, even though there were open seats. Once seated, we waited about 20 minutes to order before finally stopping a waitress to take our order and get drinks. The menu was VERY limited. Me and my wife both got a 20$ restaurant week meal, thinking it was a great deal. It wasnt. It was a small portion of porage and maybe 3 oz of beef. We also were given a single plate to share with 5 Ritz crackers and some cheese. The food was tasty, but nowhere close to 20$ meals. And the prices on the non restaurant week deals had definitely risen since moving to the new location. The service was exceptionally slow. It took about an hour to get all of our food which came out in a strange order. And lastly, to top off the changes that I disliked, we had to tip! The old location didnt have you tipping anyone and it really nice to not have to worry about it! It was something different than the rest of the restaurants and set it apart.

Heard a lot about this place over the past couple of years. Very cool as you approach it (provided you dont accidentally walk right on by). Theres an iron gate and then you walk through an outdoor courtyard that almost transports you to a different place. I was surprised at how small Foode is (maybe enough room for 30 people) and how it was set up. Not a typical restaurant. You order first at the counter, like a fast food joint (I dont mean that disparagingly) and then you go grab a seat and wait for your order, which theyll bring to you. You dont have to pay right when you order, either, in case you want to grab another beer or whatever. I left my tab open for just that reason. Service is awesome, but the place is pretty loud. Be warned, there are only a few tables and one big communal table that you have to share with other parties. Im not huge on that, but trying to get people to interact isnt entirely ignoble. After all, isnt part of dining out sharing the experience with those around you? Definitely a unique little place and worth checking out.

For such a high rating, it was surprisingly underseasoned. The space was comfortable, but felt like they were trying too hard to be something they cant with the average kitchen staff. The constantly rotating menu might be too much considering how ordinary all everything we got turned out. In addition to the two dishes below, the shrimp and grits were bland. It just seems like such a simple set of southern dishes shouldnt be too hard for such a highly acclaimed location. That being said, the service was very friendly. I will note that one member of our party was wearing cargo shorts, flip flops, and a bright yellow t shirt. We got seated at the very back of the restaurant while there was still plenty of seating at the front. To be honest, if it were my place, I would have done the same. I say this to warn others not to dress like a slob when coming to this restaurant. Overall, not a terrible experience, but definitely room for improvement. Bottom line: the vision is there, but the kitchen just isnt delivering. Dont expect to be blown away.

Weve eaten in-restaurant at Foode multiple times and alway been blown away by the high quality of their service and food. So we asked them to cater our own businesss grand opening celebration, and could not have been more pleased with the experience! Beth, Joy, and Annie were so easy to work with, helped me find incredible options within my limited budget, and made sure that of all the things to stress about the day of a big event, their service was not one of them. They arrived well ahead of the event to lay everything out, working within the confines of a small, multi-roomed space, checked in on us throughout the event, and then did an amazing job completely taking care of the clean up afterwards. We never ran low on food, but its been a week and I am STILL getting comments from other attendees on how much they enjoyed everything. Overall we had an amazingly successful event and I know that Foode was an integral part of that success! THANKS YALL!!

Foode is a great low-key concept for excellent food in Fredericksburg. Located in an atmospheric and historic courtyard between brick buildings in the old town, it can be fairly easy to miss the entrance. The tables outside in the courtyard are great for some fresh air with your meal. There is no wait service as you order at the counter inside from the fairly extensive menu featuring farm to table local fish and game. The beer selection is bottles only, but not bad with a few crafts and even one or two locals. Everything on the menu was delicious. The softshell crab was very unique with a nice crisp crunch and delicate sweet meat inside on a tasty salad bed. The burger is huge and plump and cooked perfectly with great seasoning and tasty blend of meat. The steak and pork chop were exquisite huge thick cuts of meat. Service is super friendly considering they don’t get tips. Dog friendly.

It was good, but not great. We got two of their cocktails, old money and the watermelon purée one. Old money tastes like a shot of bourbon. It was rough to drink and the watermelon purée one was okay but a weird mix of sweet and spicy. Anyways that was a wasted $20. The pimento cheese melts are good. I got the New York strip steak. It was pretty good had some garlic butter on top and fries. Wish it came with a veggie or something else. But just steak and fries for $21. And my gf got the roasted chicken. It was pretty good had a honey drizzle around the plate, the kale that came with it was nicely seasoned with spicy mustard. All around it was nice but Id get the burger next time. The main dishes were just okay.
