This is the only place Ive been in Charlottesville that has asked if we would prefer marbled or lean brisket. Which impressed me right at the start and made me appreciate everything that followed. We went with marbled. It was delicious. The options are sandwich or platter, but platter just meant a sandwich with more sides. The bread wasnt amazing, just a basic white brioche style, not terrible but not really adding much, so I ate the BBQ without it. Would probably benefit from grilling the bun, maybe trying something a touch yeastier. The meat was nicely cooked, not too chewy and very flavorful. Could do a big of work on their sauces, but it seems like they were trying to cover a range of flavors. Could use something sweeter. Pulled pork was also delicious, collards were just right, Mac and cheese was impressive. Much better than youd expect of a small BBQ joint. Al dente. Very basic utilitarian seating area, maybe with a touch of modern industrial style. Good vibes actually, counter to that other review. The counter attendant was very pleasant and accommodating. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place for a tour of the BBQ in Charlottesville. Significant improvement over the BBQ joint that used to occupy the same location. Ill be back.

Sadly, stay away. We came here for a last minute lunch. We were in a great mood, looking over the menu and waiting for the customer in front of us to be helped. That took an unusually long time. It seemed like there was only one employee behind the counter. We waited patiently. When it was our turn, we approached the counter. The employee who seemed to want to be anywhere but at The Local Smokehouse didnt look at us. She curtly asked another customer who walked in whether she had a pick up. My girl friend and I looked at each other and quietly left the establishment. Unfortunately, we couldnt taste the food but got pretty bad vibes. Avoid if you are in a good mood and looking for a happy place.

Traveling in Charlottesville area and so glad we found this place. In a part of town that would seem easy to miss. First thing we noticed as we got out of the car was the smell. OMG! Getting excited. Not disappointed. Dry rubbed pulled pork and brisket. Yummmm. Sauces were ok, but the meat stands on its own. So tender. Wonderful flavor. Add to that the courteous service and we just had a memorable meal in Charlottesville. Well done Local Smokehouse.

Literally the worst food Ive ever had Im Charlottesville I got a brisket sandwich which was full of fat by the time it was said and done only 45% of the brisket was actually meat which didnt have any flavor at all their sauces were a shame just bad combinations with trendy local names I could go into more detail but simply put it was a bad experience and Ill never go back

The food is great here. Ill admit its not my favorite barbecue, but I still love it. They have a good variety of sauces and the sides are really well done. I can confirm there is usually a bit of a wait, even if youre the only person in the restaurant, but its worth it for the food they serve.

Great, smoky affordable BBQ. Been there a bunch; love all the meats and veggies. Best cornbread. Very reasonably priced. Highly recommend!
