We recently went to Southerleigh for appetizers and small plates. We enjoyed 5 of these along with some of the fresh craft brew. The food was great, although a theme youll see below is that it didnt wow me or amaze me at any point really (only thing thus far is the pork chop). I always felt like the flavors of everything we tried could have "popped" more whether it be through more acid, salt, or fat. Or all three :) Deviled eggs with bacon and onion marmalade. These were really good deviled eggs: savory-yet-balanced. The pig fat pull apart rolls were also very good. How often do you find real fresh-baked rolls, especially in a cast-iron skillet, and most especially with lard rather than some cheap and nasty shortening/vegetable/seed oil? Further, theres a compound butter to go with it. Thats comfort food right there. We also got some herbed mash potatoes, and for mash potatoes, theyre good but nothing revelatory. Now, the two most standout dishes follow: the snapper throat and the chicken cracklins. First, the snapper throat is a deep fried snapper throat. Its delicious, all by itself, but there are two sauces that come with it as well. I believe they are two versions of a remoulade at the time we visited, both delicious. The snapper was memorable as was the the cracklins. Now, these cracklins are covered in a mixture of Crystal hot sauce (it doesnt get much better than Crystal) and honey. These are pretty good, and I recommend them. The Dog Ate My Alarm is a chocolate stout that I deeply appreciated during the course of this meal. The only comparable stout of similar taste to it is the Samuel Smiths Chocolate Stout out of England. We finished with the cobbler dessert, which was the weakest point of the meal. I thought the cobbler was unbalanced due to disproportional levels of peach, blackberry, and dough. I understand the use of the frozen vanilla anglaise; however, its a better application in theory than in practice as its still mostly frozen when your plate arrives. Ive had much better cobblers in my life, and most recently, at Stonewerks of all places. On other trips, weve tried most of the other sides - all good, but nothing special. The best thing weve eaten thus far was the pork chop (perfectly cooked) with a bacon and sausage gravy. One of the top 5 pork chops Ive eaten. Its really the only thing on the menu that has surpassed "good" or "pretty good" to "great". In short, I really enjoy the atmosphere and the theme/menu of Southerleigh. Its not one of the best restaurants in town (and its a bit overrated I think by the local media and public), but its definitely one of the better restaurants in town. Most things are "good" (prepared mostly properly with some flavor to it), but only the pork chop thus far was "great". Its a solid 4 stars; to get 5, they need to put out better versions of Southern food (particularly the sides and small plates) than I can make myself at home.

Not the way I wanted to spend my Sunday. My husband is only off on Sundays, so this Sunday we decided to spend it at the Pearl. Before we went to the Pearl we planned on having lunch at this restaurant.... Big mistake! First off, they serve brunch, but not Bloody Marys. I got over that pretty quick after being served a great beer. When I order my beer I also placed an order from the kids menu with a side vegetable. It took about 40 mins for it to come out, and was served with very spicy corn on the cob for an 18 month old. We asked the waiter about this, and was informed the cook sent out this for the kids meal since they had no other vegetables. We then asked for fries(which is on their menu), the waiter said okay, then came back and said they were out of fries, but had potatoes to make hash browns. ?????? At this time we were really confused. Potatoes, but no fries!? Already a hour has passed and we still havent gotten our food... We wouldnt have been so frustrated if people that were seated after us were not served their food before us. We decided to cancel our order at this point and just leave. The manager soon came over after letting the waiter we were leaving and did state the corn was not supposed to be served and that they did have fries. She also stated our food was fixing to come out, but we wouldnt wait any longer. Everything was already so weird, we felt leaving would be best. Wished we would have just gone to one of the several restaurants at the Pearl. The manager did take care of our entire bill and boxes our food up for us, but that doesnt make up for the time we wasted there. Sorry, but we wont be going there again. So many other places. Horrible experience!

We brought our fathers here for a early Fathers Day brunch. We made a reservation because I heard it gets packed. Our reservation was for 11:30 am. It was steady busy but not overcrowded; there were available tables. Our server was Scott and he was handling numerous tables. Regardless of that, he was polite and swift. The only negative was it took a while to get our drinks. But once we got those service was consistently swift. He checked on our table an inviting number of times; he didnt neglect or harrass us. The atmosphere was social and comfortable. I had the chicken and waffles which was delicious along with a pineapple cocktail. The chicken was very tasty and juicy. They put on a small amount of hot sauce on top which was good for me because I dont like a lot of hot sauce. The waffle was light and crispy. My husband had a egg white omlette with crab, avocado, sour cream and green chili. My father had sirloin steak and eggs and his father had the lamb hash. They all seemed to enjoy their meals. His father said the hash had a bit too much potatoes but still enjoyed it. I definitely recommend this restaurant for brunch. I would love to try their dinner menu.

Just an all around bad expierience. The hostess seated us outside and exhibited a very condescending attitude when I notified her that the tables were extremely off balance. She insisted on repeating that the ground was not level and there was little that she could do. It became apparent rather quickly that if you are seated outside you are a forgotten customer. The server didnt show up for over 20 minutes. We didnt see much of our server for the entire meal. We had to ask for silverware, more water, additional ice, napkins, extra plates, condiments - basically everything. All of the plates came out at separate times so we had 6 people awkwardly waiting for everyones meal to show up. 50% of our food items were incorrect. They didnt put bacon and egg on the shrimp sandwich and they insisted on charging us for the sandwich anyway. The food was substandard. Nothing special. Bottom line: This place does not live up to the hype. The service is some of the worst Ive ever seen. Dont put yourself through the the misery of dining here. Find another place that at least pretends to care about its customers.

Had to share a strange experience from yesterday. For the most part everyone in TX had been so warm and hospitable, especially at the Riverwalk and downtown. Unfortunately, that was not the experience we had yesterday afternoon in the Pearl district. I am not sure it was military related but just seemed so. As I was walking with my Airman I smiled at people walking for the most part there was no response but from a few there was a definite look of negativity. Then we went to the Southernliegh Fine Food and Brewery, the restaurant was virtually empty, it was around 3:20, and the hostesses were so rude and unwelcoming, we asked to be seated inside they said the only place they could seat us was outside but we would have to give up the table by 5, again they had thirty or more empty tables inside. Obviously we left. We then ate at the Granary (in Pearl district), and there was just a negative vibe from the way we were greeted and the indifferent customer service. I would suggest avoiding the Pearl district and spend your money where they appreciate our military members.
