My date and I were seated and ordered teas. The waiter was very nice and took our appetizer and sushi orders. I specifically asked for a roll without the sauce on top because I didnt want it to be spicy. I saw the waiter scratch that off the description. My date ordered a roll and on the second, the waiter suggested we try a different roll. My date explained that we did not like spicy food so perhaps the "Fire" roll was not for us. The waiter assured us that it was not spicy, but more sweet. We turned it down again and the waiter said he would take care of it if we didnt like it. We probably shouldnt have agreed, but we did. When the food arrived, I noticed that my roll had sauce on it, but I tried it anyway. Unfortunately, it was spicy and I knew I needed to point out that I had asked for no sauce on my roll. My date tried the sauce on the Fire roll and told me that it would be too hot for me too. It was. We ate the one roll we liked until the waiter came back. We asked to try the Fire roll without the sauce on top and if we could replace my roll with another of the roll we were currently eating. The waiter was very nice and said he would get his manager. The older female manager came over and we explained that we had asked for one roll without the sauce, and then told of the conversation about the Fire roll, admitting we probably shouldnt have given in. She argued with us telling us that the menu lists what is spicy and what comes on the roll. We explained again that the menu was why I asked for the roll with no sauce and werent sure about the Fire roll when the waiter suggested it. She then pulled the plate to the end of the table, said "Ill take care of it" and picked up our sweetener packets and straw wrappers and put them on the plate. My date and I were so surprised we couldnt get out a word to explain that we werent done eating the roll we were enjoying! The waiter then came over with our ticket that only listed the two teas. We explained to him again what we would like to eat and were wondering if the manager didnt understand that. He told us that he had explained it to her but that she would not allow him to place an order for us. She was basically kicking us out of the place at this point!!! The waiter explained that they were very difficult people to work for at times and apologized profusely. We paid for the tea, giving the waiter a large tip for his trouble. This was the first and last time I will ever go to this establishment. If it was the owner we dealt with, she should either hire a restaurant manager who is experienced with customer service, or just get out of the business all together as she obviously has no customer service skills of her own.

We arrived at A-Tun and were greeted at the door and shown to our table and given our menus and a Sushi order form. THEN WE BECAME INVISIBLE! I could see my wife and she could see me, but as far as any employees of A-Tun we were invisible and they couldn’t hear us either, so my wife and I strolled around the restaurant into the kitchen and behind the counter, not really but we could have as far as the employees were concerned, because no matter how hard we waved or loudly we said “excuse me” when one passed by WE WERE IGNORED. (and they really weren’t that busy) After about 15 minutes they picked up our sushi order and disappeared again and once again we became invisible. My wife had some questions on some menu items, but it was impossible to get some help. When the sushi ordered was delivered we got to ask our questions and placed our dinner order. I did notice a young female waitress that was attentive to her tables, but she was the only one. We noticed a pattern finally, IF YOU WERE IN THE “CLICK”, REGULAR CUSTOMER THEY FELL ALL OVER YOU But, IF YOU WERE A NEW CUSTOMER YOU WERE INVISIBLE”. This place must have all the business they need so by ignoring the new customers they don’t become too full. I will admit the food was excellent, well worth the costs, and almost worth being ignored. If you go there be sure to check out the “specials” posted behind the sushi bar, the wait staff won’t tell you about them. We paid our bill, $86.03 plus, (stupid me) a 15% tip for dinner and were finishing our Sake and decided to have desert, but once again we had become invisible. I stuck out my foot and tripped a busboy (not really) to get us a waitress and a menu so we could order desert. He came back with the menu and about 10 minutes later the waitress showed up. We were informed that they were out of mango sherbet, (darn) so we ordered Mo-Chi with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup on top of it. 10 minutes later we were informed they were out of all ice cream except strawberry. So we left. If you go there and get a waitress named Hui, ASK FOR A DIFFERENT WAITRESS, unless you want to be invisible.

I will never be back to A Tan. The food was nothing to get excited about. You can get better at numerous other places around town. Tempura crab tasted like some cheap imitation HEB crab and the calamari was worse. Shrimp was mediocre. Fried rice and puffs were very good so I will give them that. What made my decision to not go back was the service. We didnt even order until 30 minutes after we sat down. Then our waiter never came back to check on us. The owner (?) saw we were out of drinks and said she was going to get me tea. She never came back either! I told the waiter I was not happy in a quiet manner no one else could hear. He apologized. We couldnt wait for the ticket anymore so we went to the front and again quietly I told the owner lady about how terrible the service was. She started yelling at me in front of everyone. Even when I was walking out the door she was screaming she hoped I calmed down! I never raised my voice, I dont like to bring attention to myself. I was so embarrassed. Completely unprofessional.

My husband and I love sushi and have always frequented A-tan. We have definitely had better - in NY, Austin and San Antonio but this one is close and easy. The sushi and food is good, but extremely overpriced. We get take out a lot, but after last night will not do that anymore. The other reviews about the management are absolutely correct - they are awful. We called last night after getting take out to let them know that they left our salad out and our soup was wrong. We were not going to go back to get it, but we wanted to let the manager know. The employee who answered the phone (Lillian) was very nice but the manager refused to get on the phone with me - they never put me on hold so I could hear the entire conversation. She basically didnt care that our order was wrong and did not want to talk to me. As a frequent customer who spends $100 every time we come in, I was pretty annoyed. Needless to say, I will make the drive to SA or Austin in the future. I will spend less and get better food and service.
