Ramen. Dont expect a quick meal. They seemed quite understaffed. We were seated and it look awhile to get our order taken and even longgerr for the food to arrive. I think the waiters forgot about a few tables on the patio....so you probably dont want to sit out there. Our server was in the middle of taking our order when she got distracted and started seating a table. Then she took another tables order and it took about 10 minutes for her to come back around and finish taking our order...sadness. Okay, the food. Tempura appetizer. It comes with two shrimp, an onion, two green beans, a sweet potato, and maybe one other thing. I cant quite remember. It was okay. Not bad, not good. The pork based ramen is pretty delicious. It seems to be a little light on the pork the first time we got it, so the second time we went, we asked if we could add extra meat...the answer was no. Regardless, the broth is really good and this ramen is still better than most places. Udon with shrimp tempura and egg. Ok ok, I get it. Its shrimp tempura in broth. Of course its soggy. But this was a whole new level of sogginess! Im going back to ramen next time. Spider roll. Oh sadness....skinny skinny little soft shell crab. There were only 4 pieces. Ive never had a spider roll that only had 4 pieces. I mean really? THATS RIDICULOUS. Okay, so overall. Slow service. But depending on what you eat, it can be delicious.

What happened? I used to come here for their ramen - savory, authentic, and highly satisfying. I can safely say I wont be returning. Let me save you some time. Go to Kata Robata - its not that far down the street and you wont be disappointed. Service was slow - I didnt get my watered down iced green tea until 14 minutes after I ordered it. I was really thirsty, water would have been nice in the interim. I ordered Miso ramen, the broth tasted too heavily of sesame - it is traditional to have a sort of baked chili garlic sesame oil, but when it overpowers everything else.... The pork was a bit overcooked (fairly tough) and didnt hold any kind of flavor. Either they had overcooked the noodles or they were just not using ramen. Hardboiled egg instead of a marinated soft boiled. Had a heavy reminisce of a wet chinese stir fry. My friend had the sushi combo - sashimi pieces were small - the beef teriyaki... wasnt very teriyaki and was really really tough. I didnt eat this meal other than trying the beef, so I cant say too much. If it werent for the time constraint and the fact that I had waited a really long time for my meal, Id have left.

For this review, I am not talking about the food of this restaurant which is always good but the experience. Its been a while since I came here for dinner. As some of you may know, the parking in Montrose area is bad. Most of the restaurants in this area will have limited parking space and so as Nippon. Yes, it was a headache to find a parking spot, but if you come early and be patient you will find one as the restaurant is not that big. So I arrived the restaurant 15mins earlier and was looking for parking. Right at the parking entrance, I can see the valet booth there which was never be there. I was like, ok, good service. But when I looked closer, it is not complimentary valet. It is a $5 valet and you have to pay in advance. Come on!! The parking is so small and you want $5 for this? I drove up, and the guy actually did not stop me driving into the parking. But there were no empty spot without a cone. Gosh, I drove out and asked if valet is a must if I want to park here and he said yes. But at that time, my car was sitting right at an empty spot. So, he doesnt even need to move my car at all and took my $5 bill. This is very sad.

This is my once - three times a week spot... Parking is so limited -- why? That is because this joint is always packed with happy regulars! The sushi is fresh and always amazing. Down with non-authentic sushi you can try at any other faux/fusion place in town! The ambience is cozy and welcoming in this family run establishment and the staff is very helpful in assisting you or answering any questions. The worst part about Nippon is that your eyes get too big for your stomach! Prices are definitely reasonable, weve actually tried to see if we can spend more than $75 (with drinks) on a meal for two and its never happened. You cant say that about most sushi joints in town. Weve tried almost every type of roll and sampled items on both the regular and Japanese menu and have been satisfied every time. I also love the fact that the sushi chef personally yells out "Thank you" to every client as they exit. Favorite roll: Naoki This place gets our business anytime we get that need for authenic, decently priced sushi.

My wife and I are new to Houston and wanted to take the kids (ages 3 & 7) out for Japenese. After searching the internet for restaurants, we settled on Nippon because we love the Montrose area. I have to admit that going out on a Saturday night with 2 little ones, I was a bit skeptical after reading some of the reviews about service but was happy to find that this wasnt the case for us. We arrived about 5:45 and it was nearly empty so we were seated immediately. As we sat there, the room was beginning to fill quickly around us. We felt the service was very attentive and the wait staff even apologized for the wait even though we didnt think we had waited long. We were in and out in less than an hour. The beef Teryiaki wasnt all that great, but the miso soup and sushi was very good. We loved the food and feel of this restaurant and thought it was a great place to take the kids. Were glad we found Nippon and will definitely be back.

We visited this place about 2 weeks ago and we were not impressed. The sushi was average at best as was the service. Not that they were rude or anything. Its just that we maybe saw our waitress 2 times during the visit. The ladies next to us had to keep waving their arms in the air to get someone to refill their drinks. Then there was the really loud table behind us that made the whole experience a little uncomfortable. My husband and I had to hear about their afternoon, their careers, and how much money they make in Vegas. TMI!!! Then we went out to our car and found that a van had just decided to parallel park right behind our car!!! I have never in my life had this happen to me at a restaurant. I had to wait outside the car and guide my husband out of the spot. Thank goodness there was an empty spot next to us. Needless to say, we wont be going back to Nippon anytime soon.

I ordered sushi while I waited for my main course Hamachi Kama, which takes about 25 minutes. About 35 minutes later the Hamachi Kama arrived. I was never served the sushi. My order dropped thru the cracks, vanished. No sushi. An apology from the waitress and a small sweet the size of a fifty cent piece was offered and declined. I stood up from the sushi bar, ready to leave. About an hour had passed, then a sushi chef came over to me and and asked as I was walking away, "Do you want your sushi order?" In a loud voice I told him I wanted it when I ordered it, not an hour later after I was finished eating and leaving." He replied, "Dont talk loud like that in front of our other customers." I left a $0.20 tip. Oh yeah, the Hamachi Kama was good. However, Ive had much better elsewhere. Id give it 2 1/2 stars. Hard to bring back to life frozen fish.
