I really wish I got to try their food, because the reviews look great. To me though, service is just as important as the food. Due to the manager being an irrational crazy person, I will not be dining here, or at least not without a formal apology. I called last night just before 11pm. The girl answered, and asked if I would be picking up, and I said I would. "Ok what can I get you", she asks. I say that I would like a spinach calzone.. ok everything is good... I would also like a chicken parm calzone. "We do not have that", she tells me. I ask if they have a chicken parm sub. She says they do. "Ok, I would like everything that comes in your meat and sausage calzone, just with chicken parm instead of the other meats- Chicken parm, ricotta, mozzarella, and dipping marinara on the side." Sounds delicious right? So, this girl says she cannot do it and I ask to speak with a manager. I hold for a minute, somebody picks up, and says "Hello", I say, "Hi, I would like to ord...." Back on hold without a word! Some lady then gets on the phone without introducing herself. I say,Hi, you guys have chicken parm sub..." She stops me right there and snaps back- "WE DO NOT PUT THAT CHICKEN IN ANYTHING ELSE THEN THAT SUB...." "..but if you guys do a chicken par...." "WE DO NOT PUT THAT CHICKEN IN ANYTHING ELSE THEN THAT SUB. AND IT IS NOW 11 OCLOCK AND WE ARE CLOSED!" I then politely tell her, that I was just trying to pay her for food, and that I did not mean to offend her, and for her to have a good night. When I was a floor manager for a restaurant inside of a NYC hotel, once a guest called room service for breakfast and asked for a banana when we were out of them. The girl that answered the phone, said no we do not have that, and proceeded to politely hang up with the guest. I asked her what that was all about, and she told me that the guest wanted a banana and that we did not have any more. I immediately called the guest back and told her that the banana and anything else she wanted would be right up. I then ran, literally ran, in stuffy August weather, wearing a suit, to the store to get her a banana. Then I came back, and grabbed the rest of the new order, now full breakfast for 2, and delivered the order personally to her room, because it was too early and our room service guys were not in yet. Bottom line is, if you are in the hospitality industry, you do everything you can possibly do to make your guest happy. Happy guests pay you. Happy guests come back. Happy guests tell their friends. Happy guests write great reviews. You have pizza dough. You have chicken. Fry the chicken. Roll out the dough. Egg wash the outside rim. Place the filling on half of the the dough. Fold in half. Place in oven. It is truly that easy. Unless there is really something weird going on, like their pizzas and calzones are all pre-made or frozen. I am paying you.. or tried to pay you for food. Not the other way around.

When I moved from the DFW area to Austin in 2011, one of my first orders of business was to find the best pizza Austin had to offer. Pizza is my favorite food and so I made a quick google search which overwhelmingly brought up "Home Slice" as the winner. I was quick to give it a shot shortly after moving here. First things first, the parking to get there is an absolute nightmare. Ive tried going during different parts of the day and always find that its a mess in that particular area of Congress. My ultimate go-to pizza is mushroom, pepperoni, and jalapenos. The next thing I found out is that they dont have/offer jalapenos. This is literally the only pizza place Ive found (and Ive tried many) that doesnt have jalapenos. So I begrudgingly went with just a mushroom/pepperoni pizza. Next surprise, for a two topping large pizza they wanted $23.00 plus tax. Thats quite expensive for only two toppings! The actual pizza itself was not worth the high price for the pizza. Its definitely a greasy pizza, and the toppings didnt appear as fresh as my actual favorite pizza place (i Fratelli). i Fratelli used to exclusively operate in the DFW area, however this past year they expanded to Austin. Having tried a slew of pizza restaurants, including on a recent trip to NYC, i Fratelli is still top dog in that category. I strongly recommend you try them out instead.

So, today was my first time ever at Home Slice and Im beside myself. I went on a Wednesday afternoon so it wasnt very busy and before the "watching the bats/dinner crowd" hit and there was ample parking. Walked in to find a very positive-vibe hostess, who suggested the backyard- covered porch. Perfect day for it. The server came quickly after I was seated and recommended a nice beer since I had asked. Within a few moments his replacement showed for shift and took over. My new server was "Mu" (I believe) pronounced like "Moo" and he suggested the special white and spinach pizza. And I also went for a slice of margarita as well. Both were FANTASTIC and the beer was a great suggestion that broke up the heavy garlic in the white pie (which I LOVE garlic so I was a happy camper) *Note: My personal taste - I should have ordered the white pie with spinach well done so the ricotta gets all melty and gooey* To both Shane the manager and Mu my server, the service was above and beyond what I expected, and you guys DO take care of your patrons. Thank you! Home Slice is the closest Ive had to my favourite NYC pizza since moving to TX and its good enough to scratch that itch and not leave you disappointed!

Since it sprung up on South Congress a few years ago, Home Slice Pizza has quickly become a new Austin institution- so much so that More Home Slice, devoted to takeout and by-the-slice pizza, has sprung up next door to handle the demand. It has grown a cult following, and sponsors fun events like the annual Carnival OPizza, but as for the pies themselves... well, call me a bad Austinite, but from me they get a resounding "meh." Its certainly not bad, but there are places in town that are much, much better. Home Slice keeps it pretty traditional Americanized Italian, with a few more creative items like Eggplant Pie and White Clam Pizza, and a decent wine list. Their ingredients are noticeably fresh, which is often a rarity at pizza places, and the pies are baked to the perfect consistency so theyre neither runny nor dry. Other than that, though, this the pretty nondescript, and the same type of pizza youd get at any quality Italian restaurant. Theyre clearly benefited quite a bit from their ultra-popular location, and a Home Slice meal might be a good addition to a day at SoCo, but they certainly dont merit their own trip.

My husband and I took our son to Austin for his 16th birthday. We were trying to decide what to have for lunch when my son spotted Home Slice. He said he had heard great things about the pizza (via Rooster Teeth on YouTube). We were seated right away. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. We ordered a medium pizza to split (sausage with fresh mozzarella). It was AMAZING - absolutely the best pizza weve ever had! My husband told the waiter that he wished we had a Home Slice in Houston. Our waiter said we could always get a pizza to take home, and that they would par-bake it for us. So, we stopped back by the next day on our way home and got a pizza to go (and some pizza by the slice for lunch). For the pizza by the slice, we got a pepperoni, a plain cheese, the white pizza with spinach and mushrooms, and the margherita. All were amazing! Oh, and when we told the waiter that it was our sons birthday, he came back with a giant rice krispy treat. All-in-all, it was a great experience, and well definitely be back next time we are in (or near) Austin!
