This is one of my favorite no fuss BBQ joints in Austin and my go to for pulled pork. Im from Virginia and we take our pulled pork seriously. Texas is best at brisket and Ive learned to respect and love the meat and the delicious sauces that come with it. This place gets the job done for me though. I always get pulled pork, coleslaw, and fried okra. The pulled pork isnt too dry and has a great flavor. The coleslaw is a perfect pairing with the pulled pork. The fried okra is crispy and flavorful (and good dipping device for the tangy BBQ sauce). You can also pair it with a big iced tea or beer. The prices are extremely reasonable, especially for the location. Its right near Barton Springs - so perfect after a day lounging by the natural pool. Dogs are allowed in the back, only to be teased by the delicious smells. Theres picnic tables in the back with bottles of delicious BBQ sauce decorating the table. Theres even a table for their pet squirrel Zorro on the wall, high near the trees. I havent seen him, but if he has perished, Im sure he was full, fat and happy - just as I always feel when I leave.

There were 11 of us on July 4, 2008. We ordered drinks around 6:00 pm, and dinner no later than 6:30 pm. We asked the waiter to check on our order around 7:00 pm, and he apologized that it was taking so long. We then watched yet another table arrive, place order, and be served. At 7:25, after an hour of waiting, the manager told us the ticket said we had just placed our order at 6:57, they hadnt started preparing it, and it would take at least 30 more minutes. She insisted that we had not been waiting almost an hour, and that the restaurant had not made any mistake. We were polite and tried to explain. In return, she was very rude and made several inappropriate gestures/comments. Although this group has eaten there MANY times before without a problem, this was a very, very bad experience and we will not return. Could it have something to do with the fact that our group was speaking Spanish? I hope not, although the [anglo] manager made an inappropriate comment in Spanish as part of her berating attitude. Plus, the music was really loud, which made conversation nearly impossible.

I always have fun when I spend my quality time at the Green Mesquite. Its got that great diner/bbq-joint feel, it smells great, the service works, and the food is pretty solid. I dont love bbq, regardless, but this place has its purpose in the world, and if youve got a hankering, head in and you wont be disappointed. The cobbler and pies are delicious too. The outside seating area rocks... such a fun music venue. You can still chat it up and enjoy great music at the same time. Had my moms 60th B-day party out back a couple weekends ago, and the band was great on the embarrassing remarks and birthday mentions. Really appreciated it - its not every day that you turn 60, you know. This place is also just so very Austin (thanks to gods)... I hope that it doesnt get moved - that would be a travesty.

so 3 canadians decide to visit me, i suggest a bike ride to barton springs, on the way they begin to melt, so we need to make a pit stop. green mesquite was right in front of us and they had never had bbq, i had never heard of this place but they looked miserable, we went in, ordered our bbq, a canadian ordered the ribs, they were giant (think of fred flinstone) but flavors...disappointing. i had brisket that was dry and not smoky, cajun rice that just tasted like cumin and was completely dry and over stemed green beans. the canadians seemed to like it but i bet it was their lack of bbq exposure plus maybe heat stroke? all in all i would never go again, such a waste of location and meat!

My husband and I went here back in April. We picked this spot because it was featured on "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives BBQ" with Guy. He gave the smoked wings high praise. We wanted to see if they were as good as he claimed. Oh my goodness they were amazing. Green Mesquite has packed these wings with some much flavor and the sauce is finger licking good. The meat was so tender and fell off the bone as you sunk your teeth into them. We give them "four" stars for their Wings. After we checked out of our hotel, we had to stop by Green Mesquite to pick up an order of "wings" for the road. Thanks Guy for the heads up. The Kenniebrews in Your Rearview

When a BBQ place says its specialty is the chicken fried steak or chicken fried chicken, I shouldve known I was in the wrong spot. Smoked wings were OK. Food was just mediocre at best. I had brisket and chicken and mac and cheese. Kids got a burger and ribs. Mac and cheese was bland, chicken was a little dry and the brisket was marbled (which I like) but it was only a few slices. Our bill was $70 and no one walked out with the feeling of having to ever come back again. Came here because of food network diner drive in and dives, now Im questioning Guys recommendations. You can better BBQ at Rudys, Blacks, Ironworks, Salt Lick, etc.

Just got 75 dollars worth of to-go food for my business for our Saturday lunch. It was horrible. Each of the seven of us disliked our food entirely from here. Pretty disappointing that all of us thought the food was bland and soggy and horrible. I was there before the order was ready and it was soggy when I checked it all in my car, so its not like it day around there waiting for me to pick it up and got this way. Absolute worst French fries in my entire life and the onion rings were equally as horrible. Thankfully I made a batch of cupcakes for the crew because we all just trashed our food. Live and learn. Wont be back.

VERY, VERY Good. Instead of standing in a line, like Blacks down the street, this Home style BBQ, serves you at your table. We got generous portions of 3 smoked meats and 2 sides for $13.98. That was about half the price of Blacks up the street. And frankly, .. they tasted about the same. So after coming here first, Blacks 2nd, I came back here for thirds. Service was really great everybody checks on you. You might start with 1 waiter/waitress, but 6 or 7 people will have refilled your drinks, and brought you things before you get your check. If I lived in this town I would be a regular customer, hands down!

Green Mesquite seemed like a cool spot. Id passed it a few times, and really liked the bands they were hosting each time I was nearby. I finally got a couple of burgers and fries to-go one night, and was really, really disappointed by what I received. The fries were soggy and not seasoned at all, the burger was flavorless and cold, and the vegetables werent the freshest. There is no other way to describe it but as really, really disappointing. Maybe its my fault for thinking I could get a good burger from a BBQ joint. I may end up going back to try their barbecue, but am definitely done with their burgers.
