Kreuz Market and Smittys Market have joined forces to open a new barbecue restaurant together. Kreuz used to be located where Smittys is. It was a family business before a falling out that caused them to go their separate ways and have two BBQ joints. Now the Schmidt family has come back together once again bringing over 75 years of experience. Most of the meats were already cut before I ordered them. I guess they wanted to stay ahead of the crowd. The issue with this is the meats will get cold and also dry out a little bit. In fact, my brisket and turkey were cold when they put on the tray, and the brisket was dried out a bit. All of that aside, the brisket was cut into chunks. It was really good. It had a good crust with a nice smoke ring. I like a pepper heavy rub. The fat was rendered well. The ribs were also peppery. They were tender but not falling off the bone, and they had a good flavor and smoke. I was disappointed in the sausage. It was bland, and I could not taste any smoke. This is surprising given that the sausage that comes from Kreuz and Smittys is really good. Four dollars for a ring is also steep in my opinion. The sausage was high in fat content and one of the greasiest sausage I have ever had. The grit and casing was ideal though. The turkey was really good. It was juicy and had good flavors. The macaroni and cheese was good. You cannot really mess that up. They do take credit cards, have forks, and barbecue sauce. Some of this is missing from the other two locations. The sauce is mustard based and different but not bad. There is a lot of potential oozing out of this place. It is currently legit, but once they work out the kinks, the stars could be the limit.

Very... VERY disappointed. I was looking forward to this, mainly because the last time I ate in Lockhart, the meat was like eating a hockey puck. I was hoping that they would have much better meat than their sister shops in Lockhart... But they didnt. I went in and had some brisket with my nephew. He wanted brisket and I didnt want to drive him to Rudys like he wanted. SO... Schmidt to the rescue... right? WRONG. My experience with brisket is that typically the fat, that is left on the meat, tends to cook into the meat, making it melt in your mouth. The fat on this meat was just a glob of goo that I had to trim off of the meat. And after trimming off this inedible part of the meat, my nephew told me that he felt like he was chewing on a MilkDud. It was gummy and, again, very disappointing. Everyone has had a bite of grizzly meat that is eventually spit out because you just cant chew it... that was my first and probably ONLY experience at Schmidt. And if you are going to say... "well maybe you got a bad piece of meat." You would think that the "Experts" would have noticed that this meat was nasty and not sell it. At this point, County Line and even Rudys still have the best BBQ close to the Bee Cave area. Heck, I will drive 20 minutes past Schmidt Family BBQ and go to Opies in Spicewood.

We visited Schmidt on Memorial weekend, if possible we would have rated it lower. I dont understand why they dont provide the same flavors/recipes that they provide at their Lockhart location Smittys Market. We have always driven down to Smittys Market when we desire the best bbq. I was born and raised here in Austin and Im familiar with all the bbq places in and around Austin. Im very disappointed with the Bee caves location except with the pecan pies they sell, which are made in Kyle, TX. My favorite bbq place in Austin is Stiles Switch in north Austin and second choice is Browns bbq in south Austin. The Schmidt family (in my opinion) has the best bbq place in Lockhart, TX south east of Austin and I highly recommend it over all the bbq places around this area. Kreuz Market was the original name at this location but have moved to a new location which youll see as you drive into Lockhart from Austin. The owners of both are related to one another and both provide the best bbq around, however Smittys employees seem happiest and are friendlier (in my opinion).

TOO EXPENSIVE!!!! I love this BBQ but Ill just wait for the occasional trip to Lockhart to enjoy it. Because I know the EXACT same quality is half price elsewhere, its hard not to feel ripped off when leaving with Schmidts Family Barbeque. Its high prices must be why the few times we went inside the restaurant is always so empty of business. Schmidts - a piece of advice: look at Jack Allens and follow that model. Make it affordable and people will come. Consumers know quality food and will pay a fair and reasonable price for it. Youre gauging folks with your pricing. Afraid? Try a half price happy hour with your menu and dont alter it so the half price is really not a deal. Be real, half price for everything for a couple hours and watch people flock in. Trust your product. I am like MANY, love your food, have the money to spend but wont when I feel its unreasonably expensive. Id take the family there once a week if it made sense. Just saying.......

The general look and feel is too Galleria. If youve ever been to the originals or Blacks the theme of BBQ is supported by the establishment. Secondly, the brisket served to me was good, but nothing like Blacks or the original. The ribs were peppery and dry. The turkey was moist but grey in the center. The slaw tasted rancid and metallic. Then theres price. Holy smokes it adds up faster here than just about anywhere. Too high cost for an otherwise mediocre experience. Sadly, there are not many options for BBQ in the area. People pay premium for anything out there and dont always demand better quality. The cream poblano corn was great.

After living in Bee Caves and Lake Travis for 20 years its always nice to see new business come to the area. Normally we visit Rosies on 71 for Breakfast Tacos, but this weekend we thought we would give Schmidt BBQ a shot. We got there at 10:50 am and the cashier took our order, then she looked back and said we stop selling breakfast at 11:00> We answered no problem," its 10:55 and it we be to go". Her reply was do you want lunch or not? NOT! We called Rosies and they were ready when we arrived in 10 minutes, and we will never eat at Schmidts BBQ. **does not matter how good your product is, if your service stinks.

This review is for Schmidt’s Lakeway location which used to be Buster’s. This evening was my first visit after name change. I was hugely disappointed. I paid a good $20 for stingy 1 lb of Brisket which turned out to be poorly cut and consisted of ½ lb of inedible black charred surfaces & yucky fat. I won’t be going back any time soon. The one star is for the Krautze sausage, green beans & beans which are decent but hardly any reason to frequent any Texas BBQ joint. I will stick to Rudy’s 6 miles north from there from now on. At least the quality of their meat is consistent.
