Local Taco used to be an easy recommendation for modern Mexican food and drinks, but changes in early 2017 have all but ruined the experience. The most obvious change for the worse is in the taco shells. The shells themselves are now pressed in-house and have an incredibly strong starch flavor, in addition to frequently being so dry that any wet contents fall directly through the bottom. The menu seems to have been altered across the board to include more fillers (primarily lettuce), such that the previously delicious Korean BBQ taco now alternates between 70% dry lettuce and carrots or feeling like drinking teriyaki sauce. The carnitas taco (previously pork and pico) has had a healthy dose of dry lettuce unnecessarily added to the top. The popular half price margarita days (Monday and Thursday) are now gone, replaced by $1 off (after a base 50c increase) happy hours from 4-6PM on weekdays. Ive visited the Sylvan Park location three times since the menu change and every single time my order has either been made wrong (barbecue sauce on a carnitas taco), served inedible (see "drinking teriyaki sauce" above), or has been delivered with sauces or ingredients from other peoples orders in the basket with my food. I cant say youll have the same experience with the service, the bartenders and front of house staff here are perfectly pleasant people, but I can guarantee youll be wondering what changed if you visited Local Taco prior to 2017. I used to visit Local Taco at least twice a week for a great spot to eat and drink on a lovely patio. It pains me to say that now I will not be returning.

I was a regular to this local taco bc of how vastly superior it was from its counterparts in Brentwood and East Nashville. I have eaten here 3 times since the ownership has changed hands. Unfortunately they took the liberty to hire someone come in and revamp the menu. Some things they kept the same and many things they changed. I have yet to have anything that was changed taste good. Even their original tacos are worse and not seasoned properly. I had Korean tacos (which should use soy/salt for the marinate) and they were extremely bland. This was after I waited 30 mins for them to come out while I watched other tables that ordered after me eat their food and leave before I even got my food. The manager was unapologetic and did very little to try and help. In short, she is terrible at her job. The rest of the staff has changed and there is a much different attitude now and its not a good one. They act like your a nuisance when you ask to fix something when theyre the ones that screwed it up. The only person worth anything in this place now is the Kiwi who works the bar. Nevertheless, local taco has now lost a regular customer permanently. Update: went back. Same story. Sadly. This time the chef argued with me about how they used to make their tacos even though shes only been there for a few months at best. New ownership has made great updates cosmetically but went the other way with their product. Manager was great however but the kitchen staff seems great at times and awful at others.

On this particular day, I wanted tacos but what was I to do, just any old tacos wouldnt do but I refused to risk monster traffic and take a 2 hour lunch just to have this in my stomach. All of a sudden a beautiful memory came to mind of biking through Sylvan Park, which conveniently has a Local Taco nearby. It was a mere 6 minutes from my office and with very light traffic, I was sold. Parking there is just like parking anywhere in Nashville these days but finding a spot on the street was easy enough. I opted for an order of Guacamole, 1 Korean BBQ taco and 1 Nashville Hot Chicken taco. Ill be one of the first to admit that Im getting a bit burnt out on Nashville hot chicken variations popping up EVERYWHERE but today I was feeling a heady love for my city. I copped a squat on the patio on that gorgeously slightly warm day and enjoyed. The hot chicken wasnt spicy to me but apparently if my eyes arent watering and nose not running, its not hot to me but it was a good spice level for those that arent looking for that "mouth on fire" feel and the korean bbq was tender with a hint of sweetness. How can I forget the staff .. amazingly attentive - warm and welcoming.

You know I dont really get why people like this place. I would really judge it as mediocre in terms of both food and price, but what really brought it down to me was 2 things in particular which I will detail in a bit. But lets start with the food. The small (yes, pretty dang small for the price being sold one by one) tacos taste pretty good, but again, too small for the cost. They are not amazing, they are just a little above average. Same goes for the drinks - they are nothing strong, and not exactly out of the ordinary either. That being said, even during happy hour they are not particularly cheap. If I recall correctly, happy hour just means one dollar off the price.... seriously? Thats hardly a difference. Sounds more like just making it different so that you can CALL it happy hour. The other thing that got me was the fact that I came here for the FOOD, and the cashier was really not helpful AT ALL. I mean , I understand if youre vegan, but at least know your menu.... she couldnt even offer me a suggestion besides the fully vegetable taco. Thanks, but I want some flavor. Not coming back.

Food: 2/5 - I ordered the brunch nacho dish. The chips were really salty and the chicken under-seasoned. - I also ordered the hot chicken taco. It was good - the chicken was tender and ingredients went well together. Service: 0/5 - It took nearly an hour to get the food, and the restaurant was not even busy. - They forgot half of my order at first. I needed to remind them of the tack before they brought it out. - The brunch nacho dish I ordered was supposed to come with chicken, eggs, chips, cheese, salsa, and onions. - I received just a bowl of chips and the eggs. - When I asked for this to be corrected, the server TOOK THE SAME BOWL and just added the missing ingredients on top. - And they still FORGOT THE CHEESE. - The place also has an 86 health rating which is kinda questionable.

I was really excited about trying this place out. I have heard great things and was anxious to see what it was all about. I went with my girlfriend on a Friday night around 8PM. Lets just say it was anything but good. We ordered what the host recommended: 3 korean tacos, 1 fish taco, and 2 buffalo chicken tacos. Everything came out frigid cold. There was barely any meat on the tacos and the majority of the chicken was just crispy breading. The fish tasted like a frozen fish stick from the grocery store. The korean taco had decent flavor, but it could not make up for the fact that everything was cold, not even a hint of warmth. The best thing we had was a $4 bottled corona. I was very disappointed and will not be back.

Local Taco is a nice place to chill and have a few well priced tacos and margaritas. Local Taco is a big hit in Nashville. The food and drinks are not bad, but they are not great either. The tacos are a little bland lacking in flavor or overwhelming on the taste of flour tortilla. The margaritas are okay, but all you really taste is the triple sec they put in it. There are several other places in the city that offer a much better crafted margarita and better tasting tacos for the same price. If you are looking to try something new, sure check it out. But if youre coming here expecting the best tacos and margaritas, you may be let down.
