This will be a bizarre review. Easily the best sushi restaurant in the city. Fish is amazing, the chefs are top notch and the prices are fair. HERE is where things get odd. On Saturday May 16, 2015. My brother and I go here for dinner before a concert at Mud Island. I go ala carte on my order and spend about 50.00 on me alone. He decides to get a dinner special that’s got a Salmon roll and 10 pieces of nigiri and he orders a beer. We both ordered a salad which was extra. All told we are about to drop 75.00 on two folks easily. NOW begins the issue. ALL he asked for was to switch his Roll from a Salmon to a Tuna. The waitress said she would have to check to see if it was possible. Oh okay. She comes back 2 minutes later and just says “No”. We were like “What do you mean no?”. She said that they can’t switch the rolls. My brother stated that he did not mind paying more for the roll and asked to see the manager. A few more minutes go by, we get our salads and the female manager comes by and said “You asked to speak with a manager?”. Her tone seemed a tad odd to me. We told her of our issue and that we’d gladly pay extra to simply switch the roll. She says it CANT be done, not even for money. Its policy. What?? “This is insane” I proclaimed “I have been to dozens of sushi restaurants in Memphis alone that do this without any issue”. She stuck to her guns and said it’s not something they do BUT she could go check. I quickly told her to either come back with our checks for the salads and drinks or come back with the fact that a SINGLE freaking roll could be switched. She came back and said “We can do it THIS time but next time they can’t”. Folks I have never been so blown away astounded and vexed at a restaurant like this in my life. What arrogance. The customer is obviously NOT right at this place. Again, the food here is amazing. But they are clueless on how to handle customers. It’s not like we were insisting on a name change of the restaurant or insisting they give us ALL the sushi for three dollars. Nope, nothing insane. We were simply asking for a switch of a roll. This single roll prompted me to write this review. The management there needs to freaking get a clue as this is not how you abuse paying customers. Maybe they know they have great chefs and fish and simply don’t bow to customers requests. This much is clear. The food makes me want to visit this place every week…the attitude makes me NEVER EVER want to return again. I am so perplexed. I think I will take my money elsewhere from now on. I am still flabbergasted at the fact this ‘altercation’ even happened. For a bit we thought we were on some reality TV show about rude service. Nope…they come by it honestly here. All they had to do was switch rolls, up charge is a dollar or two and we would have been happy customers. Nope, apparently COMPANY POLICY is King here. That’s the last of my money they will ever see.

My husband and I just ate at Red Koi and it was the best dining experience we have had in a very long time. Not only do they greet you promptly and make you feel welcome, but all the staff are equally friendly. Three different waitresses came to check on us in intervals. It was frequent enough to make you feel satisfied with your waiter/waitress, but it was not so much that it became annoying. We were given complimentary egg rolls which were delicious. And the lady who manages the restaurant worked just as hard as her employees. We had hardly sat at our seat for a couple minutes before she came to personally take our order and get us whatever we needed. The food was prepared and brought to us within ten minutes of ordering, and they were quick to ask for refills on our drinks. The food was great and is easily on par with restaurants like Osaka. I have no complaints about this place except the price and that is just because we are poor lol. But we will definitely be going back. There really need to be more restaurants like this one.

I recently spent a weekend in downtown Memphis to visit some of the citys attractions that I hadnt seen in almost fifteen years and Red Koi was somewhere that we decided to eat as a last minute - it was near the hotel - decision. We ended up eating there two more times during our two and a half day trip because, quite frankly, it was some of the best tasting sushi that Ive had in my life. The staff was extremely friendly, the service was prompt (even when there was a thirty person line at 7pm), and the atmosphere was enjoyable. However, what really clinched this place as being a new "every time Im in Memphis" establishment was the sushi. It was about $20 for two rolls and steamed rice every time, and everything from the chefs specialties to the ubiquitous California Roll was hand crafted by an angelic master.

Delicious food and wonderful service. Im traveling for work and 6 months pregnant, and received amazing service. I sat at the low sushi bar which was just fine because I could sit at a chair instead of a bar stool. My server was extremely attentive and took wonderful care of me even though I was a solo diner. Hot fresh food was delivered promptly and I never had to wait for a refill on my drink. Tasty sauces and the soup and salad were a perfect appetizer before my entree arrived. About half what Benihana would cost me and twice the quality! If I come back to Memphis I will definately stop here again.

Order the hibachi shrimp which wasnt all that great. The soft shelled crab tempura appetizer was awful. It was not prepared properly and not crunchy at all. This was my 1st time visiting because coworker order take out from there frequently and always mention how prices are pretty decent. Well sorry, guess Benihana has me spoiled to the max cause the meal was not worth the price. Honestly, I would have rather spent a few extra dollars for an entree that is edible and delectable than on one that I am going to have to trash.

These stars are for my server trista if it wasnt for her I wouldnt have returned because the rest on the staff looks at me like Im not supposed to be there and look so disappointed at my presence and the first time I came they tried to seat me behind some wall where I couldnt see anything nor could anyone see me ... but as long as trista is there Im fine she treats me like a normal person . And Im very nice ...I guess the color of my skin means cheap and no tip to the rest.

Someone needs to do something to bring this rating down. At best this is a 2.5 maybe a 3 star. It wasnt real busy when I went, plenty of employees vs customers. Habachi came out way before sushi, and the quality of the sushi is not the greatest. NOT what I was expecting when I saw a 4.5 star rating. Service was good, steak was chewy and over cooked, chicken was ok, 4 sushi chefs on hand and still waited almost 20 min for sushi. I have no intentions on returning.
