The food was good but the service was poor. It took 10 minutes after being seated before a server spoke to us. He was unfamiliar with the menu. The server mentioned that there were sushi roll specials but said he couldnt see the board from where he was standing so we would need to get up to go look at them ourselves. There was no sushi check sheet, so we had to go through the menu item-by-item listing off all the pieces of sushi we wanted. it took 45 minutes to receive our sushi with most tables empty and one couple at the sushi bar. The sushi was fresh with large portions and relatively inexpensive. Half way through dinner we ordered another beer which we did not receive until we finished eating for 10 minutes (took 30 minutes to get the beer, we sent it back). We had a coupon for 5% off up to $50 or 10% off over $50. Our dinner was $49.75 after they took off the beer we didnt;t get. We didnt complain, but our waiter said he would talk to the manager about giving us the 10% off, especially since our food took so long. After over 5 minutes of discussion with the manager (we could see them discussing it), our waiter said he met us half way. He then handed us the bill showing 5% off which is what the basic coupon said anyway! As we walked out after paying the hostess was hunched over her phone texting (in full view of the "manager"). We actually spend several hundred dollars a month on sushi but will not bother with Sumo in Gulfport again. Too bad because this could have been a new favorite if not for the management.

I do want to state that before our experience today, I would have given a 5 star; the experience today deserves 0 stars. Sumo is our favorite Japanese restaurant to go to on the coast. The food is always great; I absolutely love the sushi. The service is always hit or miss of course, but what we experienced today may result in us finding a new sushi spot. We were literally the only guests (2 people) in the dining area the entire time we were there, and we received the absolute worst service Ive ever experienced. We waited nearly 10 minutes to be greeted while the server was in plain sight, after she approached the table we gave her our drink and food orders, then we waited almost another 10 minutes to receive our drinks. It wasnt long after receiving our drinks that our food came out - we made a joke that wed get our food before our drinks. After dropping off our food, we were never checked on again, both of our drinks were empty, our server no where to be found. We were finally over it, and I had to go to the hostess to ask for our check; I let her know how bad the service was and nothing was offered in return, not even an apology..... I will miss going there to get the Biloxi Roll!!!

Extremely unhappy with this place!! Weve come here so many times but this time sealed the deal that we wont be back. First off, my fiance ordered sushi and he didnt like it, said it tasted sour and they very nicely took it off the ticket. Then he ordered some shrimp hibachi and as he was eating it, he noticed a long black hair intertwined with the rice. Well when we brought it up to the bartender because our server was nowhere to be found, he had it remade. When our bill came, the hibachi was still on it. We asked if it would be discounted or comped and they said no so we asked to speak to a manager. The manager comes over and is extremely rude. He then walks away as we are explaining whats going on! Well about five minutes go by and we can hear him talking about the situation to other employees. He starts saying that we did it on purpose to get free food! So my fiance goes up to ask what the hold up is and the manager says "I was working on it, but I had like three things to do." Excuse me?? Then he gets in a verbal altercation with my fiancee and calls the police! Never coming back here again. Even the police looked at the manager like he was stupid.

Food and chef was outstanding. Wait service was terrible. Group of 6 for Hibachi. One person was late arriving and had to ask for sweet tea three times. Tried to order appetizers three times, they finally arrived chef had started cooking our Hibachi meal left soup and salad bowels on table, never removed appetizer plate. Have to send one of our party out to get some more to drink. All glasses were empty.Had to wait 15 minutes for check. This poor service ruined my grandson special birthday meal. Hope this was the waiters first day because there could not be any other reason for such lousy service. It was so bad, I left the chef a separate time and designated the waiters a $0,00 tip. You need to fire this guy ASAP I r be prepared to lose my business. JWP

Sadly, the server missed bringing one of the beverages and was reminded after the main course was served. Asked for extra utensils and got them 10 mins late (i counted). We werent given all chopsticks. He rushed right after our order. When we complained a lot of stuff given were late (only 3 things), his reason was we kept asking for stuff and we interrupted him. Also he NEVER asked we were doing ok. Not once. I was a server before and i knew how to perform. As if he kept rushing it to cover as many tables as he can. At that cost service was bad. Sorry i wont recommend anyone to come here.

Ok, I never EVER leave reviews, even by the places I love the most. However, this is the worst sushi I have ever eaten, and Ive eaten from the west coast to the east coast. It took forever to receive my two sushi orders and it was horrific! Eating sushi that taste days old, I couldnt even finish! Hope I dont get food poisoning!!!! Waste of money for small portions. Never again! Oh and it doesnt even deserve one star but I had to leave something

I was surprised that my server was actually Japanese. We had a fun chit chat, in Japanese. Food was delicious, almost as good as food back in Japan. And when I ordered the Sashimi Delux, appearently their new sushi chef had made it, it was visually stunning. I loved it. Also, reasonable price, nicely decorated inside. Maybe good place for a date night, if youre up for Japanese food. Ill definitely be coming back here for more.

I am giving 3 stars only because the food is really great. The sushi is fresh and delicious. But my waitress was terrible. No sense of urgency and had no idea about the menu. Another waitress had to deliver my food after I saw it ready and sitting there for 5 minutes. My original waitress didnt even noyice my food was brought to me by someone else until 10 minutes aftwr I had gotten it. I will be getting it to go from now on.

Went to try something while visiting and staying at Margaritaville. Hibachi was great, however our server left us midway through the dining experience. She left without advising the rest of the patrons dining. The best part was happy hour specials on the menu and drinks. Advised manager about the server leaving and his reply was that she had some "appt" and left. Not great service in that aspect and common courtesy.
