Yamatos is the best Japanese food in Johnson City. I used to work at this restaurant so I am very disappointed to read some of these reviews. Are people really complaining because of portions. Thats funny. People complain b/c theres not enough and b/c theres too much. Make up your mind people. The place isnt supposed to be like an authentic Japanese place. The simplicity of the menu is what makes it good. In case you didnt know, you can substitute things. Pretty much any Japanese place that Ive been to(and Ive been to a lot and many different states) have the same fricken menu. Not only that, but you cant make a choice about the veggies that you get in it. The servers and managers of this restaurant go out of their way to make sure your meal is what you want. So in the end, amazing food(ate there everyday I worked for the almost 3 years that I worked there)

Used to be my favorite place until I went there and ordered my usual. Something was wrong with the food, I took one bite and spit it out. It smelled extremely sour like it was actually the plate. When I made a complaint the owner came out and refused to make me another plate and said that I had to pay for it (although I ate one bite). I told him I would pay for it because there was something wrong and he got extremely angry very quickly and threatened to call the police since I wouldnt pay. I still told him I would not pay and he just told me never to come back, so I paid for my drink and left. I just can not believe that he was in such a horrible mood and accused me of lying about how the food tasted. Even the waitress agreed it smelled extremely sour. So there is my experience. I suggest going to Misakis.

I received my order but it was not as I asked. I specified "no onions" but I asked for zucchini. When I told the waiter, he said, "oh that was my bad." Instead of asking if Id like to have it fixed he comes back and says they will take 15% off my bill. I didnt get to eat my meal at all. I tried scooping the onions out but they were everywhere! So I took my check to the register and I explained I didnt get to eat my meal. They said sorry and still tried charging me for it! I asked to speak with the manager. He was fixing the clogged toilet, so I had to wait a minute. When he came out I explained what had happened and he removed the meal from my check. He apologized and said the waiter didnt explain the problem. He was very nice, but I still left hungry.

This isnt by far the worst Japanese food Ive ever had, but the general quality of the restaurant is lacking. The menu is extremely limited, sushi is not even an option as far as I could tell. The teriyaki shrimp was okay, but the accompanying vegetables were overcooked, and the carrots were so sweet all I could taste was sugar. My best guess is that they are keep costs down to appeal to the ETSU crowd, especially since alcohol is not served.

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!!!! Its so so SO much better than MOTOS! You get 2 times the food as motos and i really think yamatos is just better tasting! You will not be dis-pleased with this place! Me and my family at least eats here 3 times a week! We love it and were addicted as u maybe come a addict yourself if u try it. Oh ya, be prepared to have left-overs because you will def. get your money worth!!!! GREAT GREAT PLACE!!!!

I ordered the Spicy Chicken (not so spicy) and shrimp. Soup was plain jane, spiced chicken broth. Portions were huge, but when we ran out of drink, it took ages to get it refilled. Getting a box for the huge portions (ended up taking 2/3s of it home) was also difficult. So, the food was pretty nasty, and the service sucks.

Food quality is very consistent but the main thing here is the staff is friendly and super professional. The combination makes Yamoto stand out and is certainly one of the best/better restaurants on the campus side of town.

Not my favorite in Japanese food in the JC area, but their menu is a bit more open than others in the area. Great food, great prices. Its always a close 2nd in my book for Japanese food in town.
