I wouldve loved to have given this place five stars, but I just couldnt. By no means do I have an expectation for five star dining, but just a few points of contention. First, let me say that the food is great; that cannot be denied. My daughter and I had the chicken and waffles (the kids comes with chicken fingers). My chicken was delicious; a little small, but tasty nonetheless. I also tried the green beans and sweet potatoes; they were both fantastic. The waffle was a little undercooked and chewy. I wish it had been a little crisper on the outside. The food is fresh, and seems to be made to order, which is a great way to guarantee optimal quality. However, do NOT go starving, because youll be waiting at least 20-40 minutes. Its understandable, but they might consider offering something to the customer while they wait. Even priced appetizers would be helpful. Ive read that theyve offered samples to a few patrons, but it doesnt appear to be consistent. Our waitress was Keisha, and she was nice. She didnt update us on our meal, but she was attentive enough. I went on a Wednesday around 5:30pm; the restaurant had about six people seated, so the vast majority of the tables were empty. The sign stated we had to wait to be seated, but that wait took longer than usual since the only person that could seat us was on the phone with a takeout order. Thats well and good, and I understand multitasking, but he didnt apologize for the wait either. I asked to be seated at a larger booth due mostly to height, and maneuverability with a six year old, and was told that those tables were for parties of 3 or more. Now, I understand having a policy such as that, especially during dinner rushes, but we waited ten minutes to be seated, and the restaurant was fairly empty, so giving into that small of a request wouldve been a great way to rectify any initial misgivings. Just food for thought. All in all, the food was great, and Ill visit again to see how the service is next time. If you havent been, you definitely should.

This was my fourth visit to Carmis and I have to say after the horrible service, wait for our food, and attitude from our waitress I will never go back. Like others have posted here on Google reviews, on Facebook, and Yelp, the silverware, cups, and dishes are filthy. When we arrived there were two 2-seat booths filled and one table of two. We placed our order for the fried chicken and the other tables vacated but another 2-person booth was filled behind us and then a larger booth with 4 people both of which ordered them same meals as us. In fact, the 2-person booth behind us order EXACTLY the same as us and we laughed but that laughter stopped when their food came out immediately and they were out the door before our meals even arrived. Our waitress was downright rude to us as well. When our order finally came, only my cousins chicken dinner arrived and the waitress who brought out our meals (not our original) looked at me like I had two heads when I asked where mine was. So then we had to wait for my meal to come out. We also order ONE dish to go and they gave us TWO of those without the accompanying side dish (we decided it wasnt worth fighting over it to get it taken off and knew that we would just each take our own home instead), anyhow, when I asked about the accompanying side to go with it, our original waitress shot me a dirty look, rolled her eyes and acted like I was inconveniencing HER! Never again. As I saw one reviewer state on a FB review - your customers ARE what will keep you in business but you wont have any if you treat them like they are not welcome.

The wait was long and they were short staffed. Mac and cheese was too cheesy and running, greens were heavy in vinegar. My "stuffed" chicken wasnt stuffed it was 2 small breast filets with a cornbread stuffing in the middle (like a sandwich) my friend ordered fried pork chops (they came out burnt) the pork chop dinner entree was 14.99 so they "took off" the pork chops and charged for "the complimentary salad that comes with every meal, the complimentary corn bread that comes with every meal and the 2 sides that came with her meal. Her total came to $11.36 including a $0.25 credit card processing fee and she had water to drink. So there was no charge for a drink and her total was still $11.36 for a pork chop dinner priced at $14.99 without any pork chops.

Was so excited to go here for the first time with my girlfriend. We ordered the pork chops with greens and yams. Pork chops were amazing but my girlfriend found a bug in her greens. We knew the manager so we were content in being civil with the situation, until the manager avoided coming to talk to us after request to speak with her for the bug in her food. This completely ruined my experience there on top of how they made the waitress take the blame when we wanted to talk to a manager. Never going there again. Great waitresses but management is mediocre after letting that happen and hidding. Completely dissatisfactory.

This place is outrageously delicious. I went with a real live (skeptical) Southerner, and she was blown away by the authenticity of the menu and execution. I dont know what others are talking about online, we had superb service, attentive, friendly and prompt. This will definitely be a spot we return to regularly. The ribs were the best Ive had in town (seriously), the mac and cheese was superior, and "the Southerner" had the fried catfish and almost died of happiness. Finally, the atmosphere was pleasantly homey, and the slow jams in the background added a nice touch. Thanks Carmis!

What a cozy place to take in all your soul food favorites. After hearing those around me rave about their food I had to visit. After taking in healthy portions of food, I quickly realized its their delicious sides that take cake. Servers are very nice but delivery of food to the table is slow. Their prices are no more expensive than going to a chain restaurant where you leave disappointed and hungry. Portion sizes here will make you feel a lot more satisfied. I will definitely be returning to try more delicious food.

We came here at lunchtime, during which most entrees come with 2 sides. We tried their signature fried chicken and smoked ribs, along with sides of sweet potato fries, greens, fish stew, and candied yams. The chicken is definitely worth trying; I havent had such juicy chicken in Pittsburgh, and probably in all western PA as they claim. In terms of sides, I thoroughly enjoyed the greens, candied yams, and fish stew. The ribs were so-so (probably better at Showcase), so next time Ill try something else like the tilapia.

Good food quality. Most everything else though could be improved. Wait for the food was about an hour on a night that wasnt too busy. Was served my water in an unwashed crap covered cup. The waitress was nice but had to cover most of the restaurant plus the phone and seat anyone that walked in. I ordered a side of mac and cheese to go with my chicken and waffles but never received it. I can say the chicken and shrimp poboy was good.
