I just dropped by Allegro for the first time today as I am really tired of being disappointed by Giant Eagles bread (tastes terrible the first day, is moldy by the next - theyre sure they baked it fresh that morning??). I actually went in because I bought a Google Offer of $5 for $10 worth of baked goods. The first things that caught my eye were the pastries. They looked so good! As I am not a big sweets fan (I prefer salty to satisfy my cravings), I passed them up to check out the bread selection. I came for a baguette as that is my boyfriends favorite to pair with a lot of dishes that he cooks. This baguette was easily bigger than the ones weve bought at Giant Eagle for about the same price. I also ended up selecting a honey sesame bread for me to munch on. Let me tell you, it is quite tasty. It was moist and slightly sweet with a hint of peanuts (or maybe that was just me? :). Ok, I didnt pass the sweets up altogether. I just kept going back to the rugelachs and ended up selecting a raspberry-filled one. Yum. The perfect amount of sweetness for someone like me who avoids cakes, cupcakes and ice cream like the plague. It was flaky and buttery and just all around good. I also would like to give a shout-out to the lady who helped me out. She was very kind and attentive and fully answered my 21 questions lol. I got a bread card so I shall be back!

I really miss living a block away from this place. Its been a favorite of mine since I moved to Pittsburgh fourteen years ago. Even with the coffeeshops nearby, Allegro was the place to get my coffee before driving to work because (a) the coffee pump flask is self-serve, and (b) there is never a lineup for coffee. I wish they would bring back their chocolate-chip-with-ginger cookie. I forget what it was called... fairy chip cookies? Magic cookies? Something like that. That cookie was unique. Anyway, if youre like me and have been spoiled by breads from Europe, this is the place. Allegro makes me ashamed to have been raised on Wonder bread. Try the kalamata olive bread.

This bakery is so great--Yep--Ill add my "love this place" vote to the list. Their breads are delicious and top-notch--such good quality. Their staff is always so friendly and helpful, great service. I also really appreciate the stamper cards (buy this many loaves, get one free). They also have a nice variety of items--not just great breads but pasties, cookies, etc.

1970s was a student at CMU. Just a block away from my apartment on Hobart St. J&L, USSteel still operating, but this neighborhood smelled like fresh baked bread. We would buy a few loaves out of the back in the middle of the night. A treasured memory. Anyone know if this is the same business?

Chocolate eclair, cream puff, chocolate cream puff, cinnamon bread... all awesome. They often have organic bread, too, as well as several fancy breads they only make at certain times during the week. Just generally a very nice bakery, and they also have organic hummus and several cheeses.

What a delightful bakery. Their breads are full of rich taste, and their pastries are some of the beset Ive ever had. Their croissants just blew me away - delicious. Two nice bonuses: - they have coffee and tea. Perfect for a breakfast. - they sell day-old baked goods at 40% off.

This bakery can really be considered a staple of Squirrel Hill. It might not be as well-known as Gourmandine, but this is quite good for something a bit more local. Lots of pretty and inexpensive sweet treats, with the chocolate snowball being one of my new favorites.

I was visiting family in Pittsburgh and got introduced to this bakery. Before I left town I bought bread, pastry, coffee to go and cheese. Everything was fresh, delicious and a delight to look at and savour.

The bread we got was really good. One draw back is that they require a $5 minimum purchase for credit cards, which is against their merchant agreement and not allowed.

Best challah bread around. My wife and I even got it for the blessing at our wedding reception. Every table had a loaf. Try toasting it and adding jam. Delicious!

The apple pies are almost all apple, not the gooey jelly you find in supermarkets.
