Im new to the Portland and wanted to find a "Go to" Chinese place. Ive been to Zien Hong a handful of times, mostly because my partner is such a picky eater and only eats plain chicken wings at Chinese restaurants. The chicken wings were a perfect hit the first time! After a few visits, he says the chicken wings recipe is never consistent. Theyre simply different every time. The sesame chicken has always been awesome. Unfortunately, thats about it. I had a craving for wonton soup once and thought Id try it out. The first time was okay, but very metallic in taste. The very last time I decided to try it again, I couldnt even SMELL it without gagging. It smelled like dead fish in the Gulf of Mexico. So, needless to say, I didnt eat it. That makes it unfortunate for those with a fish allergen (I take notice to allergens because I work in the food industry). I got pork fried rice in addition to the soup...and again, fishy and VERY BLAND. Disgustingly, it gave me diarrhea in the middle of the night. The beef with broccoli was bland as well, and the orange chicken smelled awesome (like apple fritters, oddly), but the chicken had too much hard, rubbery fat to it. Fortune cookies were stale, too. Therefore, I will not go back. The price isnt even unbeatable or anything spectacular, and are just above average. Very disappointed.

When it comes to true perfection, only a few things come to mind: Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon, the Mona Lisa and Zien Hongs Chicken Lo Mein with no vegetable. After having it for the first time, i realized the true spectrum of the human taste bud. Other than the out of this world cuisine, the waiting staff seems to be from that of both a five star restaurant and a down home buffet. I feel like i am surrounded by my best friends every time i go there alone. If you are lucky enough to get a table at this restaurant at around 11 PM on Sunday night. You get the chance to be serenaded by the local mens choir practice. However, anytime you choose to go is the right time. Best Chinese restaurant this side of the Great Wall, I give it 5 bags of popcorn and three sodas.

We were hoping Zien Hong would be good given their excellent reviews. I was craving Chinese food but was very disappointed with the takeout we ordered. Seems that most of the complaints come from their takeout orders. Basically, our meals were made with chicken scrap. The beef wasnt that much better, but the chicken was by far some of the worst Ive had (and Ive eaten a lot of Chinese/bad Chinese food) My noodle dish was very sub par and minus the terrible meat reminded me of something I might get at Panda Express (dont think Panda would get away with serving chicken that bad). I felt nauseous halfway through my meal, but so far so good everythings stayed down so I guess they at least get 2 stars for that :)

Yuck! Are you kidding me?! Has anyone in Portland ever had good Chinese food? Probably not, because for 10 years I havent been able to find any here. The food we got from this place was inedible. My husband took 2 bites and threw his Kung Pao in the trash, my kids would not touch their fried rice (which theyve never turned away before), and my "seafood" soup advertised with crabmeat consisted imitation crab! They were generally skimpy on the meat and overloaded us with rice, noodles and broth. Spent about $40 on take-out and nearly all of it ended up being thrown away. I do not understand how this place could possibly get acceptable, much less glorious, reviews!

The service was startlingly good, especially given that it was 11:00 on a Thursday. The food was excellent, the perfect balance between greasy/bad and fresh/flavorful. The prices are not even worth mentioning (so affordable) - again, especially considering that they have something of a monopoly on late night Asian food in this town. All said and done, I cant imagine anyone having anything to complain about. The perfect experience for this style of food.

I have been coming here for years. I have never had a bad experience. The food is tasty and piping hot. Service is fast and efficient. You get seated immediately. They are open till midnight. They have a wide variety of Asian food, from Pad Thai to Kung Pao. This is not a place for snobby foodies who complain about "grease". Its a gem of a dive with good food made well. Reasonable prices but not super cheap, most dishes are 11-13$ but quite generous.

There are a lot of other Chinese or asian themed restaurants in the area but I keep coming back to Zien Hong for their excellent food and nice staff. The fact that they are open late almost everyday is great since I can satisfy a late night craving. The portions are pretty generous which is perfect for the next day. The pepper salted squid and hot and sour soup are excellent here. I highly recommend trying this place out.

Never had a bad meal. Great food. Great staff. Everything weve had A++. Salt and pepper (had both fish and tofu) is very good. Garlic green beans excellent. Weve never had take out here. About the only negatives: Parking can be bad sometimes. Bathrooms are not handicap accessible. (Actually Id say the mens room is in the negative, if youre not handicapped, you might be if you hit the little step wrong).

Had a double date with my cousin and the food was great! Unfortunately, my fiance got food poisoning so that sucked. The waitress was also not very attentive to us. Im not exactly sure which platter made him sick because we all ate the same thing. Hes also the only white guy in our date group so maybe thats a factor too. I dont know. I used to enjoy this place, but they ruined it for my fiance.

You can tell when people love their jobs and where they work. The staff here was so friendly I was immediately impressed. And not just 1 person but every single employee I had contact with. The food was the best Chinese Ive tried since moving to Portland. The prices were reasonable and I have no problems recommending this restaurant to friends and clients.

We tried the salt and pepper chicken, Mongolian beef and general tso chicken. Salt and pepper chicken has been the best Ive ever had! The Mongolian beef is ok. My boyfriend liked it more than I did. The general tso chicken had huge pieces of chicken in a nice spicy and sweet sauce. We went for dinner and the portions are definitely family style.

I (and my entire family) love this place. It had some of the best food in town. However, we got takeout from there a few weeks ago and it was awful. I dont know if something has changed with management or their chefs, but it was like a completely different place. We threw most of it out because it was so bad. Bummer.

(Popping traditional Chinese flavors. You most likely will not be disappointed in the taste of any dish. Go for it!)<-last review The last time the Family & I went here the food was not as good. Maybe it was just a bad day for Z.Hong. Well eventually try again and see if theyve permanently "Jumped the Shark"....
