Im just a normal Mexican food lover and I absolutely urge anyone to NEVER STEP FOOT IN THIS RESTAURANT!!! Go to the Original Taco House instead where they have polite waiters and waitresses and decent food. I FELT THREATENED BY THE SERVICE HERE AND I HAD MY 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WITH ME! My sister, my daughter, and I were greeted with the most unprofessional and hostile service in our lives. WE DID NOTHING TO PROVOKE THE WAITRESS. The waitress is obviously anti-military and does not cater to familys at all. Let me explain what happened. On a Monday evening my sister, daughter, and I decided to go to the Tapatio for dinner. We enter the restaurant and were greeted by a Hispanic woman that showed us to our seat. She forgot to get or even ask if I wanted a high chair for my two year old, but I pretended that she may have just forgot to think of it. She runs off and I venture out to obtain a high chair for my daughter. When the waitress comes back she asks us what wed like to eat. She looks at my sister and calls her "Amigo," but nothing is mentioned about it because we were all in disbelief. She then asks me what Id like to drink, and I respond with a Pacifico. She then asks for my ID and I give her my drivers license. She rudely stares at my drivers license for awhile and tells me that its expired. This happens all the time with me, because my expiration date is Military instead of the normal date and will expire when I get out in 3 years after 5 years of current service. I then show her my military ID and she makes some kind of rude remark "Oh cooooll" then gestures and gives it back to me. She stomps off to get our drinks and I tell my sister that were leaving because I was afraid of what they might do next (possibly poison or spit in our food). As she comes back with my Pacifico I tell her were leaving and she gives a snide look and responds okay. My daughter is screaming her head off as we leave, because she was very hungry. I wouldve gone directly to the manager, but I didnt want to leave my screaming daughter with my sister. During our entire time in that restaurant my sister and I were polite and did nothing to deserve such hostile service. Later that night we went to the Original Taco House and had a great dinner. I called Tapatio to inform the womans manager of the poor service, but unfortunately the same female waitress answered the phone and told me the manager wasnt in. During the conversation she was extremely rude while I was being as formal and direct with my side of the conversation as possible. She would intermittently set the phone down just to not talk to me while I waited for her to pick back up the phone so I could finish my sentence. No yelling or slander was used on my part, but yet I was still treated with unprovoked rudeness. I CANNOT EXPLAIN WHY THE WAITRESS WAS SO HOSTILE TO MY SISTER, DAUGHTER, AND I.

Last night I decided to try El Tapatio, and it could not have been a worse choice. I ordered two vegetarian burritos to go, and when I got them home and we sat down to eat, we discovered that these burritos had no beans and no cheese. They had only sauteed vegetables. As a vegetarian, this is something one runs into once in a while, but not that often in Portland: restaurants that know nothing about how vegetarians eat, and make recipes that are just plain ridiculous. Do they think vegetarians only eat vegetables and nothing else? Burritos with no beans? Come on... whats more, they were crappy tasting, and they charged me TWENTY ONE dollars for two lousy burritos! Jesus Christ! For vegetarian burritos that are REAL burritos (with beans, etc), Burrito Loco would have charged me six dollars a piece for two huge burritos. Will never try this place again. The food is crap, and the prices are ridiculously high for their crappy food. One more thing that seems appropriate to mention is that looking at the other reviews, most of the good reviews are from anonymous google users, while the other real reviewers give them bad reviews. Obviously, the good reviews are not from real customers: they are fake reviews from people who work for El Tapatio.

This place has been here for years and years but for some reason we had not tried them until recently. The food is fabulous, huge portions, very good drinks (just have one margarita unless you are accustomed to heavy alcohol!), the service is really good also. Very attentive to the tables. However, some of the staff dont speak very good English. That is fine as my hubby hails from Mexico. For others it could be a bit challenging but the folks here that dont speak English will let you know right away and get someone quickly that does. It works. This is authentic Mexican food and just the right amount of spiciness too. Really great!

Gross food. The best part was the salsa. Beans where out of a can and it was a paste. Chicken enchilladas were dry and had no flavor. Steak fajitas were bland and without flavor. Hostess was rude and easier assured with us when we tired to send food back. Had to grab my plate and give it to the wait staff because they left it at the table. Worst service and worst food in portland. What kinda Mexican place has no door on the crapper? Dont ever eat here. If your friends suggest you go here, you know to never let them pick the restaurant ever. I feel like puking now. Seriously this place ruined my night.

Went for a quick bite at a slow time (4 on a Saturday). Service was poor; very unfriendly. Walked by my empty soda glass 4 times; when I finally asked for a refill, there was a $1 soda refill charge not listed in the menu on my bill. The food was below average. It would have been okay if it was less expensive, but with every menu item between $10 and $14, I expected a little more. There are much better options in town. Ill also reiterate the unfortunate horse statue with almost human genitalia a previous reviwer mentioned.

This is the perfect spot for a huge plate of deliciousness. The service is always fast and extraordinarily friendly. The menu is quite extensive and theres almost too many choices. This place reminds me of the many family oriented Mexican restaurants that I grew up with in Southern California. Plenty of options for vegetarian or meat lovers. I imagine you can get vegan choices as well. The decor is very wonderful to behold as well.
