We had dinner at Amadeus Manor a couple months ago. The manor is a beautiful, rustic mansion in a wooded setting… But that is the end of the happy story, the rest was not a happy experience! ~ We had purchased an online gift card and honestly we would have left before we even had our dinner if we hadn’t already paid for it… Let me tell you what happened. First when we arrived at the address there was just an empty parking lot… So we called and were told the restaurant and parking were at the top of the hill. My husband drove our huge pickup truck up the very narrow driveway to the top of the hill to find there were only about 6 parking spaces and they were all occupied. My husband is such a gentleman, he let me out so I wouldn’t need to walk up the hill, while he had to back all the way back down (since there wasn’t even enough room to turn around at the top). The evening was cold, so I decided to wait inside. While I was waiting a woman employee went passed me 3 or 4 times and never greeted me or even acknowledged my presence expect to wave me off (like an annoying bug) on one such bypass… Once my husband entered she quickly greeted him and took us to our table… It was obvious the table had not been re-set since someone else had been sitting there, pieces of the service were missing and others were out of place (one would possibly expect this at a coffee-shop, but not a high end restaurant). After an extended wait the woman finally came to ask if we wanted drinks… My husband ordered a beer and I ordered a white zin. Again, after an extended wait, she returned with my husband’s beer and said to me “Oh yes, you ordered a red wine”. I told her no, I had order a white zin… She left and came back three times, each time recalling “Oh yes, you ordered a red wine”… And each time I reminded her I had order a white zin… Eventually I did get my wine… At some point while we were waiting another server (with a bandaged hand) came to our table and asked us if we had napkins… After looking around we discovered the napkins were folded into the wine glasses. Why he didn’t know this and just look for himself one can only guess! The restaurant was practically empty, so there is no excuse for such strange and lacking service. I forget how many hours we were there just trying to have a simple dinner… ~ But, back to the story… After another extended wait the woman finally came to ask if we wanted to order. We had been waiting a very long time so we were ready to order, but before we could say anything she turned and walked away! Eventually she returned again and asked if we wanted to order. She raved about their mushroom soup, “the best you’ve ever tasted” she said. So we both ordered the mushroom soup and one of their dinners… When the soup finally came it was a disappointment to put it mildly! If you hadn’t been told it was mushroom soup, you would never had guessed, I think you could probably get better soup from a can… I noticed another reviewer said her daughter hates mushrooms, but she loved their mushroom soup… That’s because no mushrooms were used in the making of that soup! Eventually our dinners did arrive… the food wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good. Again, it was what you might expect from a coffee shop, but not from a high end restaurant! Very disappointing! I should have written this review sooner, many of the odd things that happened have slipped away from my memory (luckily, painful memories never seem to last)… At one point during the evening, the man with the bandaged hand came to our table and I commented to him that their service wasn’t just bad, it was bizarre! While we were sitting there I kept telling my husband I felt like we were involved in some type of reality TV spoof and that any moment someone would jump out and declare we had just been recorded for some such TV show… In the end, in what I assume was an attempted apology, the woman gave us a bottle of wine and told us “Happy New Year”…

While the manor has old world charm, it is dank, dark, and musty inside. The carpets are ancient and dirty. We hesitated about eating dinner because of the musty old house smells, so decided to have a drink out on the deck (only to be told they dont have their liquor license to allow us to sit out there). The $10 happy hour priced mixed drinks (gin and tonic and margarita on the rocks) were subpar, but we sipped them and walked about the place and perused the menu. Lots of small rooms upstairs were set up with nice tables for dinner yet one side room had a table cluttered with papers and obvious old take-out food containers and dirty plates (clearly visible from one of those small dining rooms). The descriptions in the menu makes the food sound amazing, and for the prices we expected it to be amazing ($27-$58 range for entrees). We decided to give it a try. Sadly, we were extremely disappointed with our meals. The beef stroganoff was described to be made with filet mignon, mushrooms sautéed with shallots, and light cream sauce. The meat was NOT as described and tasted like previously frozen, overcooked, and slightly rancid long strips of mystery meat. The mushroom sauce tasted like it was out of a can. The chicken cordon bleu wasnt any better - it was dry and flavorless, the black forest ham was chewy/rubbery, and some parts of the breading were soggy while other parts were burned. When we asked about wine options, we were told there wasnt a wine list but the waiter listed a few options including a malbec, which we ordered. He came back shortly and told us they didnt have any of the options he originally told us about, then struggled to list what the current options were. We ended up ordering the pinot noir, which, sadly again, was subpar and overpriced. This was the most overpriced, unsatisfying, horrible tasting dinner weve had at any Portland area restaurant. We struggled to give this a one star rating (which was for the old world charm and peaks of the Willamette River through the trees).

Amadeus Manor is a special place for many. It was recommended to my husband (then boyfriend) by a coworker who got engaged there. Our first visit was for an anniversary, and on our second visit, my husband proposed. Amadeus Manor is absolutely breathtaking, inside and out. Beautiful stone steps lead to the manor. As you are climbing youll see a lovely fountain and beautiful foliage. Inside you will see beautiful decor. If you ask, they will let you go upstairs and explore! The table settings are beautiful. Make sure you request a window table and you can see the sun set over Portland while feeling the warmth of the crackling fire. The lighting is perfect, and is great for an intimate meal. The owner herself is often your server. She is the kindest woman and will do everything in her power to make sure your experience is perfect. They usually bring delicious homemade bread to your table. One time they forgot and instead sent us home with a full loaf. They will often comp dessert for a special occasion. I heard a fellow patron mentioning they were unhappy with the rareness of the steak. She immediately offered to replace their dishes and offered them free dessert. While spendy, the food is excellent. Through our multiple visits weve tried a variety of dishes. We love the mushroom soup as an appetizer, and you cannot go wrong with any of the main dishes. We also loved every dish weve tried, though the Creme Brulee was lacking compared to the other desserts. Keep in mind, this is not an in and out establishment. The food is fresh and meant to be enjoyed over time. It takes awhile for the food to be delivered, but we actually enjoy that part. It gives us time to enjoy our soup and bread, and to enjoy a break from our fast-paced lives. Over all, I cannot recommend this beautiful restaurant enough. We always look forward to our next visit with great anticipation.
