I am a local business owner and have been going to Rice Thai since it opened in 2010. I have never had a bad experience and the food has always been comparable to other Thai Restaurants in the area. I know that it has changed owners 3 times and my rant is with the newest owner, Paul. I have a punch card that was last used on 5/2013. I am one punch away from the free lunch and today I go in to order a to-go meal. I paid & presented my punch card. The lady at the counter processes my payment and then tells me that this is not valid at that store. I pointed out the address on the face of the card and then she tells me that it is expired. I ask her to show me a expiration date and she tells me there is no date, Its just expired. I was appalled at the fact that they signed the card less than 4 months ago and over the course of 2 years, but now that the free lunch is here, They will not honor the card and make every excuse under the sun to try and wiggle their way out of it. I mean cmon, whats a $5 meal to keep a client and stand behind your word! Being a local business owner myself and truly not understanding how they could pull this, I said that I no longer wanted to proceed with my order and I would like a refund( and I will never take any further clients or family there just on principal and ethics). She said that she cannot refund my card so I asked to speak with the owner. She gave me a card to call in tomorrow. I stated again that I would like a refund and she said she didnt have the password to do so, but would call the owner. The server walks away and waits on a table, answers the phone, basically everything except call the owner. I now have been at the establishment over 20 minutes waiting for a solution. I inform her that I am running out of time and she still takes her sweet time. She finally gets on the phone with the owner and he gives her the password to refund my order. She then tells me that she wants to keep the punch card, and I said NO. She told me that until I give the punch card she will not give me the refund receipt. I think at this point steam came out of my ears and so she handed me the receipt. I simply will not support a business that operates this way and treats their clients like this!!

Milwaukie is definitely hiding a jewel. Very warm and cozy inside, never too busy. I dream about their mango curry with tofu.....its one of the best curries Ive ever had. Their pad thai, spring rolls and fresh rolls are delish as well. Id love to say that Ive tried other things, but I keep ordering those items over and over because I enjoy them so much. They also make their own unique cocktails, which are pretty tasty! The Tom Yum, for example: vodka, melon, kaffir lime leaves, lime juice, fresh ginger, a real stalk of muddled lemongrass, muddled fresh ginger and a whole dried thai chili in the glass. Im pretty sure that each dish is medium heat by default, because Ive never had to ask for a spiciness level, it just comes out perfect every time. Anyone who has been to a thai place and forgets to ask for medium spice, so they end up with the spice tray because they were made a "white people" mild dish will appreciate this.

I recently moved to the area and had been driving from Milwaukie into Portland when I wanted some good Thai food. I fell in love with Thai food when in Thailand over a decade ago, and became quite picky about eating it in the states. I can say that this is one of the best Ive had in the PDX area, and Ive eaten at a lot of them. All the ingredients are fresh and nothing was pre-cooked. So, the consistency of the vegetables in the curry was great, and not mushy. Even the thai thai drink my girlfriend had was amazing! The service was very friendly, informative, and attentive. I am very happy to have found this place so close to where I live. If I still lived in downtown PDX, Im positive Id find myself driving out to Milwaukie to eat at this restaurant. I highly recommend trying the Rice Thai Cookery if youre a Thai food lover, or just wanting to try this ethnic cuisine.

Ill give it another try, but in my first visit here was not a great one. The second bite of my chicken teriyaki was all gristle and I had to sneakily spit it into my napkin. The teriyaki sauce was watery and not very flavorful and it was expensive considering its a pretty inexpensive dish to make. The doors to get in are the heaviest i have ever encountered in any restaurant in my entire life, I kid you not. No worries about any children or elderly folk getting in here, because they wont be able to.... and watch your step on the ramp inside because its easy to trip on. Im not sure what a Thai restaurant is shooting for with the decor (old American advertising is strewn about) but so far, its the best thing about this place because somehow it works. Perhaps other dishes are better, so Ill give this place another try sometime!

I have eaten Thai food in Thailand and all over America. So I offer this review with that particular insight. Most of the dishes at Rice Thai Cookery are very good. The sauces/spices are amazing. The Massaman Curry is exceptional. I love the pumpkin curry too, but I dont like that they charge an extra $1.50 even when ordered without meat. Also, the service can be incredibly slow at times, due to understaffing of wait staff. But when it comes to Thai food in Portland, its certainly in the top three. Fresh, flavorful and authentic. The previous owner was a pill and I am happy to see she has been replaced by another Thai expat owner. The atmosphere is fun and interesting, like a street cafe in Thailand, but I have solved the wait problem by getting my food to go. No more than 20 minutes from order to pick up.

After watching a "soon to be open sign" for a long time, its finally open up. The place is really cute! They reuse lots of material for their decorations. I really like shelves with old-looking radios, and some of the Thai posters they have there. The service was very friendly since the first step I walked in. A tall gentleman greeted with a big smile and let us pick our own seats, very comfortable environment. The food was excellent! It has all the goodies, plus many more. Try the sausage there if you visit, its the bomb (owners recommendation). I highly recommend if you are looking to experience new style of Thai restaurant. It totally separates itself from other Thai places around here.

We just moved to the area, so I wanted to try one of the local Thai joints and found this one was highly reviewed. I ordered Pad See Iew and Pad Thai, both medium spicy. Long story short, this was the worst Thai food Ive ever had. The Pad Thai lacked any nut flavor at all and was very hot, while the Pad See Iew was incredibly bland, with no sauce or flavor at all. The vegetables were fresh , but that was the only good thing I can say about it. I will never be going back, certainly, and I guess local Thai is something Ill just have to keep looking for.
