I normally choose to stop myself from giving a place negative reviews as I believe in positive criticism and second chances, Yet, I just cant take what happened today at Recess. Heres how it went: Im enjoying my drink with my wife and my legs crossed on the sofa (rehab phase after a severe ankle sprain). This dude , with no prior notice, rushes from behind the counter, tapped on my shoulder and says something which I didnt hear as I had my ear-pods; he then says pointing at my feet "Zapatos!". I loose my ear-pods as my wife tells him that I do speak English. We immediately left the place and made sure we had our shoes on! So here are my issues with what happened: 1. I understand cafes have different rules but I have been to so many coffee shops and never been asked to put on my sandals/shoes or move my legs! 2. Lets say Im not abiding by Recess rule and the guy had to inform me. I dont think that was a proper way of doing it knowing that I had my ear-pods on! May be stand by the table so that I notice him then politely ask me to put my sandals back on. 3. Assuming that I didnt speak English and then using a single word in Spanish is just outrageous! The guy clearly profiled me! Weve been to Recess multiple times since we moved to Syracuse. Today, the place lost two customers!

I know a lot of people looooveeee their coffee. However, Ive tried many roasts and most seem overly bitter to me. The Guatemalan was my favorite in that it didnt seem to possess this quality. (Update: Ethiopian is good too.) I dont mind coming here in the summer, as the place itself is fairly large and spread out. It has a unique vibe and friendly staff. Even though I am not the biggest fan of their coffee, I have tried a decent selection of food items (none of which were disappointing). Food is certainly tasty. If you want any kind of bagel or bagel sandwich, go in the morning. They have run out multiple times. When the school year hits, however, I avoid this place like the plague. Its a sea of students, most of whom take up the precious seating that exists and hog it for hours on end. It becomes a near anxiety attack just going inside, as its just filled with people. Forget eating when theres no place to sit down. And since I dont love their coffee, it just loses appeal all around. The location is good though, and a lot of people really do enjoy the product more than I do. Check it out, but be aware that the college season is miserable. Kudos to the staff for doing such a great job, too.

Twice now Ive gone to make a purchase only to find that the clerk can not take my card. Generally I stop at the Regional Farmers Market to buy two pounds of coffee. On one occasion the clerk was outright rude. I also saw the stand at the Fayetteville market on Thursday but I didnt ask because I didnt expect the clerk to be able to take my card. So that makes three occasions of missed sales. In this day and age of technology I cant understand why a young business such as this is not up to date. I can understand old farmers not taking a card but for this company of young people I cant. Though I guess I am an old guy too, but Im up on tech things. I like your coffee or this would not be so upsetting. I guess Ill have to try Fingerlakes coffee roasters at the mall.

I love this place. It has one of the best coffee in Syracuse. People who work there are so friendly. And I love that they have vegan food. Yet, the biggest turn-off/annoying thing is their VERY LOUD music. I do not know why they do this , I mentioned this to them a few times, but unfortunately they keep it loud almost all the time. It is not a bar or a club. cafes are for people to socialize, have a coffee, relax, chill, read, study, write and all those fun things you can do at a cafe. But with their loud music, I cannot really write or read , or focus well when I do so. Alas, it is the only cafe in my neighborhood. I hope they work on having a more quiet environment and respect their customers with this. Cheers!

Ive worked for several coffee shops in Syracuse and recess is by far the best. The owners are working tirelessly to ensure that the customers have the best experience, and the dramatic transformation within the last year is testiment to that. The coffee is stellar, the best Ive had in Syracuse, and the staff enjoy making high quality beverages because we have such wonderful customers. Im so happy that Recess has established itself as a landmark in the westcott nation. Its one of the best small businesses I have ever had the pleasure of being affiliated with. -a former Batista who left to pursue higher learning.

Coffee was good. I usually grab a bite to eat (either a bagel or today a muffin). The bagels are usually sub par but I get them because the coffee is good and I am usually hungry. I decided to try a poppy seed muffin today to switch it up. The worst food decision I have ever made. I could not swallow one bite. It was about as good as I can imagine a piece of cardboard that was rubbed in dirt. This review is 3 stars due to the friendly service , pleasant atmosphere and good coffee.

This place is awesome! The coffee is good, and has great unique flavors. They offer a cupping class once a month which I highly recommend for anyone who isnt sure what types of coffee they like, or if you just want to know a little more about coffee. Their baked goods are also great. The vegan chocolate chip cookies are the best cookies Ive ever eaten, ever. The staff is always friendly and enjoyable as well. They also just renovated and it looks AWESOME!

Nice quaint neighborhood coffee spot. Local and friendly. Beware during SU semesters it can get a bit busy in here. Students plant their butts and take up seats to study. Has the aroma of unwashed hipsters but that is part of the ambiance. Coffee is just as good as major chains, good desert selections. Nice place to grab a quick sandwich but variety is lacking. Id recommend the Nutella Latte.

A bohemian style cafe with custom roasted coffee beans multiple types and roasts, appealing to clientel of all walks of life that exceeds all of your coffee & tea needs as well as offering a menu of sandwiches and homemade bakery items. The staff is pleasant, friendly and eager to serve you. I frequent the cafe at least once a day for years and havent been disappointed yet.

This is the best espresso in Syracuse (that Ive found so far) and it is also the least expensive. Recess also, according to my wife and kids, makes the best hot chocolate you can imagine (rolo and peppermint patty being the favorite flavors). The staff is always lovely, there is plenty of room to work, sit, chat, and so on. Oh, and their baked goods are phenomenal!

The have very good coffee, but they also have a variety of vegan pastries and genuinely good Tofurky sandwiches. Their wifi is not bad, about 50mbps Verizon FiOS behind a PF Sense router. Its the most prominent staple of Westcott. They also do coffee deliveries to workplaces and sell their roast nationally. Definitely worth a visit.
