I apologize in advance if & when this offends people, but, my experience with a lot of Asian restaurants (primarily run the Asians), is that the service is mostly always poor. The hosts & servers are fairly inattentive & the language barrier (not saying all must speak fluent English) makes communication hard. With that being said, I still visit Kyoto first & foremost because the sushi quality is pretty iight & when Im craving sushi & when Im hungry, Im going to go to the nearest AYCE place. Last time I was here at this location (Eagan, Mn), Phil was my server & by far (at a Kyoto) he was the best server I have had. He was very attentive to my beverage levels & checked up on me frequently. I always make it a point to write thank you notes to my server behind the store copys receipt when I receive good service & I did that for Phil. Today, February 17, 2017, I came in, extremely hungry after a long day of work & it took a hot minute to be greeted. Some interesting happenings occurred today too. I was sat at the bar top at the back of the restaurant near the restrooms. At one of the Hibachi tables (which I dont think Kyoto uses since Ive never seen them being used), a female server was getting a full on back massage by a male server. Moments later, pretty much the entire staff was crowded by the table watching as one female server stuffed her face with (soup), rice & an entire crab. I noticed during my hour or so dining, most of the servers (maybe 6 or 7) lingered back at this Hibachi table & chatted. Some were sitting, some were on their phones. Eventually my server came to take my order. Today I noticed a lot of the servers (even as I type this) standing around the back of the restaurant while Phil, (whom I requested but thought Id give a new server the benefit of the doubt) ran back & forth pre-bussing & taking orders for his own & OTHERS tables including mine. I noticed the other servers doing the bare minimum, taking a tables order & walking away almost indefinitely while Phil did most the work. After I was finished, Phil was the one who brought me my dessert & said "I told him, hell bring out your check." So Phil had to tell MY server (who by the way, theyre all standing feet from me right now) to cash me out. Kudos to Phil. Definitely above & beyond. 5 stars for Phil

The experience was the worse experience ever. Me and my girlfriend walked into kyoto around 9pm on 05/06/2016. Walked in and the person up front was on the phone and instead of asking someone to seat us, he just walked away on the phone and we just stood there, waiting to be seated. Im here thinking you saw us walk in, really?! After he was off the phone, he asked how many people and is it for all you can eat? (No apologies) I answered for 2 and yes,all you can eat and when i said that, he took out his phone, looked at the time and sigh really loud. Like he didnt want to be there, while infront of me and my girlfriend. Its was like w/e. So we were seated but at the worse place ever in the restaurant. The floor around the table was sticky, it was like glue was smeared all over the floor. But w/e we ordered our food. Trying to make our experience worth the money. Our sashimi was delivered and the salmon & escalor was cut into 1inch by 1.5 inch cubes and we had some that were also 2 inch thick and 3 inch long, like who the heck can chew that???? That can be a choking hazard!!!! Our waitress was nice she kept checking up on us but after a while, she kept asking, do you want food, you want more? We are trying to eat and have a conversation but the waitress just kept bothering us. Dont get me wrong I like good customer service , but being too serviced, over a short period of time is annoying. And its like we know its almost time for closing, but i would like to have a conversation with my girlfriend while eating, if you dont mind. Its gave me a very bad experience, the food wasnt portioned correctly, i couldnt start a coversation without being constantly interrupted. I wont be going back for a while and if so, certainly at a different location.

The service was horrible at Kyoto. We were seated for about 10 minutes and our server never stopped by to order our drink or anything. We had grab the servers attention to order our drinks and food. It took her at least 10 minutes to bring out 4 cups of drinks. We had to repeat our order twice to her and which she still brought our food that we didnt order. And she didnt even bother to ask us how well we wanted the steak done. Some guy brought out our food but we had no utensils to eat with and had to grab another server to bring it out to us. The whole process took about 20 minutes while we could have been enjoying our food. It wasnt even have pack when we were there. She left out some of our order which we eventually ordered again. Onto the food, the rice was dried and hard, as if it was sitting out for a long period of time. The worst part of the dinner was the service. When two American male customers sat down not even for 2 minutes, she asked them "What would you like to drink, Honey?" And yet we sat tables down did even get attention from her. We had to wave her down ever time we need to order. But that table didnt have to. She checked on them occasionally and kept on saying "Honey, how is everything going for you? Is everything ok, Honey?" We ordered before those guys too and yet they got there food before us and the server told us if we dont finish there would be a 15% charge. NEVER GOING BACK

Had a reservation for 7:00pm on a Saturday for the hibachi grill with my family (5 adults, 5 kids) who were visiting from Iowa. I wanted them to have a fun dining experience, but we never made it to the table. We arrived 10 minutes early so we waited in the lobby after checking in with the host. I took the time to show the kids the grille tables and noted that all 4 were full but one party seemed to be finishing up. When I called to reserve they noted that there was a party reserved for 6:30 and since they had only one chef the next available time would be 7:00 so I figured this was that 6:30 party about to leave. At 7:15 I inquired about how much longer it would be and the host told me there were just cleaning up and we would be seated shortly. I went back to investigate and found that the not only was the last party still seated at the table, the 1 chef had moved on to start cooking for another table! At 7:25 I was able to speak to a manage who said that they would ask the group to leave and that once we were seated the chef would be with us in 20 minutes. With young kids and no guarantee of being seated we decided to leave. Not because of the inconvenience of waiting but because the host had decided to LIE to me when I first inquired instead of being honest about the situation. I have a lot of forgiveness for those in the service industry, but 0 tolerance for liars! Next time own your mistakes Kyoto Sushi.
