First time at Small Plates. Been wanting to try it for a long time. Went after a trip to the opera. Overall: just okay. First, the excellent - the hand-cut fries. Very good, fresh, and a nice aioli to dip into. The pretty good - mac and cheese. Ive seen lots of reviews that its a must-have and Id say its a good choice. Not the best Ive had. The crusty topping was dry and not hot when we got it. The okay - Thai Spiced Salmon - a specialty for the day. Came with bacon/onion slaw. Salmon slightly overcooked, but was flavorful. The slaw was a little mushy, little color, but again somewhat flavorful. The awful - the Bloody Mary, which I saw was reviewed positively by another reviewer. The worst Ive ever had. Tasted like the bartender dumped Italian seasoning (especially oregano) into tomato juice with tabasco. Terrible. So, all in all, there are better places to spend your money. It was between a 2 and 3 for me, but I gave it a 3 as we rounded up :-)

If youre curious how high Ive set the bar here: My girlfriend became my fiancée here last Sunday. I chose this place pretty much randomly as the place to propose, having never eaten here before. We are from Akron and were in town for the weekend to catch some concert action at Fisher theater, and I thought the element of surprise would be at its highest this far from home. Let me tell ya, my girlfriend is the steak nazi, and she says the petite here is the best steak shes ever eaten in her life. I was equally impressed with the crab cakes and the service. Thanks Kelley and TJ, for making our night to remember flawless. Email and phone communication was beyond excellent for a restaraunt who so obviously wasnt going to gain anything from my presence. I only wish there were a place like this in every town.

This weekend I visited Small Plates for the first time with my boyfriend and we absolutely loved it. We got seated right away, our waiter took great care of us, and the food and drinks were delicious. I ordered sangria and my boyfriend tried one of the locally brewed beers, both tasted great. For dinner we tried the beef sliders, fries, tomato and mushroom bruschetta, and the lotus tuna. Everything tasted delicious. Mango was incorporated into a few things (the tuna, my sangria, and our dessert) and it was super fresh and added great flavor to the dishes. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive and the overall ambiance of the place made for a very good night. Would definitely recommend to friends and we will certainly be back to visit in the future!

The service is rude and the dishes are overpriced and not at all impressive. We liked the decor and the menu, but were quickly persuaded to pay our check and leave by our incredibly rude server who told us we needed to hurry up and order or leave as she had other reservations for our table. We made a reservation, had ordered cocktails and an appetizer and had been there for less than an hour when this occurred! We were also shushed upon entry to the restaurant, and in retrospect should have turned on heal and left right then! Do not eat here unless you are willing to be treated poorly! Never had this happen anywhere else including McDonalds!

Had high hopes. Down there last night before Lions game. Wasnt too busy yet (5:00 PM). Stood at check in desk several minutes while workers shuffled by taking food outside before we were acknowledged, literally no eye contact. Manager had zero personality. Our server was lovely. Dont let the PR pics fool you, youll get 2 tacos, not 3 and the slider patties are about half the size of what they show. I know its a subjective thing but the cheeseburger pizza will come with heavy mustard. Couldnt finish one slice. Ill go next door the next time.

Myself and 2 friends meetup at SPD this past Thursday around 7PM. We had no issue getting a table and I the staff was very friendly. No dish left us disappointed. It was all very good though we did split the tables "most favorite" between the Chicken and Waffles and the Blackened Lamb chops. I would recommend this establishment without hesitation. Appetizer: Sweet Potato Fries Plates: Chicken and Waffles, Chicken Tostadas, Wagyu Beef Sliders, Baja Tacos, BLT sliders and Blackened Lamb Chops. Dessert: Brulee Trio

Love this place. Food is fantastic! Love the loaded mac and cheese. I took someone on a date here recently...she loved it too. The brick oven is nice too. Try to park on the street if you can because parking next door is $20 on the weekend and the city will only charge you $1 if you park on street and pay... If you go early on a weekday, then a reservation is not needed but if you going on a weekend or late in the evening then make reservations. Definitely recommend...atmosphere is nice.

Took my fiance there to try something new in Detroit. The waitress forgot our wine completely and we had to ask for silverware when our salads were brought out. The spring rolls were good but the pizza that we ordered (Forest Mushroom), all you could taste was parmesan cheese. Overall the atmosphere was good, and our waitress was apologetic for forgetting everything, but the couple that sat down next to us had the same problems that we did.

The service is awesome. The bartender is Great. All of the staff is warm and friendly. Every time we go to Small Plates we leave happy. The regular menu is exceptional but the specials are always delicious and creative. If you are going to any event downtown, make this your destination for lunch or dinner.(Call ahead-they get really busy for games and operas). The drink specials are pretty sweet too!I love Small Plates.

"The food was good and they get a point for uniqueness," said my wife in response to me asking what she thought of Small Plates. She also said that she, "liked it a lot." I, on the other hand, left hungry. Nice decor, unique menu, and interesting location. But I spent $50.00 (without drinks) to feed two adults and a three-year-old, and I left hungry. Perhaps they could offer appetizers to their appetizers.

Weve been going to Small Plates for years as our dinner place before the Opera. I think this will be our last time. Maurice salad was chunks instead of Julienne, and the dressing was weak at best. Seared AhiTuna was cold, as if made in advance and stuck in a refig. They were out of the wine we like to order, and although the staff is friendly, its just not the same place. Sorry.

Pizza is very good and quick. Service is poor, unorganized because most of the time they are very busy. The are short staffed most of the time - Hire more waitstaff on major event nights! Sitting at the bar is the way to go. They have a very good happy hour but only a few seats at the bar. Most table are reserved so its best to call in for reservations a few days in advance.

Sounds like a rash of bad servers has hit small plates. I have enjoyed the food here many times. The menu varies and what is on the menu is well done and thoughtful. The convenient location is the deal sealer so to speak. I will keep coming back. I think it is a tad pricey, thus 4 stars. It is hard to find good help even in an employers market.
