I tend to be pretty harsh on Chinese restaurants because I think we all know by now that Chinese restaurants in America are not at all based on what people eat in China... but its uniquely Chinese-American cuisine and its ours. A friend once described most American Chinese restaurants as "a wide variety of Chicken McNuggets on rice with lots of whatever sauce you choose" and thats pretty accurate. However, Shangri-La does it really well. Their version of American Chinese cuisine is much better than a lot of the more "glutinous" varieties; where deep-frying doesnt necessarily mean coating each piece of meat in a half-inch of questionable breading. The vegetables are fresh, the meat is high-quality and this is the only place in Detroit (proper) that you can get real Dim Sum. Their sushi is alright but its nothing to write home about. One standout, however, is the amazing hot and sour soup; serious, just try a bowl. Its fantastic. The ambiance is nice and clean, the restaurant is attractive, the service is great, and they have a full bar. The only reason Im docking them a star is because the prices are just a tad higher than they need to be, and thats probably because of their location.

We ordered: Miso soup Sunday morning roll sushi Smoked salmon nagiri sushi And shrimp fried rice. Everything was average. The sushi roll was kind of disappointing because the pieces were too big to be considered "bite sized". Also the outside was tempura which made it so warm and dry it kind of hurt my mouth. Personally I have a hard time dealing with Americanized sushi with all that cream cheese and stuff but you might like it. The miso soup was okay but Ive had much better soups in other restaurants before. The fried rice was average too. Not as good as Sy Thais (in Birmingham) but still a great dish for the price in the midtown area. The nagiri sushi was my most favorite. Like the roll, it was also bigger than typical nagiri sushi I have had before but at least the taste and the texture were pretty standard. The restaurant was kind of dark inside (we went around 9 pm). The service was fast and the staff were nice. If I come back, I will only order nagiri sushi or fried rice.

The kind of restaurant after which you can comfortably say, meh at least Im full... I doubled down on this review for lunch and dinner. For lunch I tried a California roll which was actually pretty good. The rice was cooked perfectly and the proportions of the roll were great. Dinner was another story. While the service was prompt and regular, the food wasnt what I had prepared myself for. The fried rice tasted like it was from an undergrad mess hall, and the noodle dish was slimy and somehow greasy... Im hoping their sushi menu has other gems on it, and I just made the mistake of ordering from the kitchen

This has long been one of my favorite places in the city. Their sushi is pretty amazing and, for the most part, service is decent. However, on a recent visit, we were told we had to wait almost 45 minutes for anything from the sushi menu. Apparently there was a party upstairs that was backing up the sushi chefs, but it would have been helpful to know that before sitting down for a double date. In any case, we stayed it out and the sushi was good, after they figured out that they delivered the wrong sushi. Ah well, you win some, you lose some. Pay a visit, but do it on a low traffic weeknight.

This place is awesome!! Ive been here many times with my boyfriend and loved it! I took my brothers today and they gave it a big thumbs up! Their food is always fresh and the service is always so pleasant. The waiters and waitresss really take their time with you and are always willing to answer questions with a smile. I live in sterling heights so its very far for me but the ride is always worth it for me!! I would recommend this place to everyone I know because everything is truly fresh!!!

Huge menu. Interesting crowd. Good food, some of it overpriced. Shangri-La tries to be a little bit of everything. Surprisingly, they mostly succeed. Dim sum is terrific. Best in Detroit. The sushi is very, very good (but very expensive compared to other regional sushi places). The chinese-american takeout-style menu is very well executed and for me at least, terrific comfort food. The crowd is heavily dominated by Asians. Not a bad indicator of quality. Also a Wayne State hangout.

The folks that run this place are as fine as the food they put out. Quality dishes for a very reasonable price. The atmosphere is unique and its fun to sit up top and watch the sushi person work their magic down below. I wish I knew my waiters name because he provided some of the best service Ive ever received in the city of Detroit. Expansive menu. Even the most simple things are delicious like spring rolls and Won Ton soup. Never disappointed!

I went in and ordered a meal for carry out. I ordered sweet and sour chicken meal. Since Im a college student I had to walk half a mile to get here and had to walk half a mile back to my dorm. I opened it up and it was not sweet and sour chicken. I sent a pic of it to my friend and she said it was almond chicken. I sucked it up and started eating it and there was sooo much fat in the chicken that even the sauce couldnt help make it better.

I WENT HERE FOR LUNCH TODAY AND I AM PISSED AT THE SERVICE I RECEIVED. I WAITED ALMOST AN HOUR FOR MY LUNCH (ORDERED DIM SUM) AND FIRST THEY TOOK A WHILE TO TAKE OUR ORDER, THEN WHEN I WAS WAITING FOR MY FOOD TO COME (WHICH NEVER CAME) I GO INTO THE RESTAURANT AND ALL OF THE WORKERS ARE EATING LUNCH WHILE I DONT HAVE MY FOOD. IM ANGRY AND DID NOT GET ANY FOOD I LEFT HUNGRY. NEVER WILL I GO HERE.

I always enjoy this place when we go. THE service is as and friendly but the food is excellent. The dim sum is the best I ever had but its the only Ive ever had but I wasnt didappointed. Even the regular cuisine is great. There is really no going wrong with this place. Its not very date friendly but for a casual get together ivwr good fiid and a cocktail it works.

Awesome sauce. LITERALLY. On a recent visit with local friends, I ordered the tonsure curry, which featured a really captivating sauce with a deep, rich flavor with hints of a rich spice palate centered around the pepper. The focus of the dish, the pork, tasted good as well, but it was really the sauce that shone. Summary Shangri-La can sauce me any time it wants.

VERY disappointed! Fried Rice wasnt good at all (too soft for FRIED rice, clumped together) vegetables tasted like they came from a can or frozen (didnt taste like fresh vegetables) I ordered the almond chicken and they didnt give me any gravy!!!?? Dont understand why this place has 4.3 stars and way too expensive for this dry bland food. Deserved 0 stars.

Very authentic Chinese food. "Chinese people eat here". The food is definitely a highlight and never ceases to disappoint. The only criticism is the clenliness and the atmosphere; which is easily overlooked by the quality of the food and selection of the food. Still the best place in midtown for Chinese food.
