They dont have a huge selection or menu but what they do have is fancy, tasty, elegant and expensive. I decided to get three things today. I got the mocha (which I had remembered from coming here a long time ago was very rich and tasty). I also got a kale, avacado and tomato salad which looked appealing and surprised me with how flavorful it was. I also a chicken and artichoke sandwich that was quite good as well. This place is a bit more pricey (even for SOMA standards) but the quality certainly was appropriate for the price and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

I dont get what some folks have against the staff here - I find the young women who work at Cafe Madeleine to be really pleasant...even when I take a ridiculously long time to decide what I want to order. The food is great - lovely sandwiches that are like a breath of freash air, compared to the other choices in this neighborhood, and huge, gorgeous salads made with only the freshest, tastiest ingredients. This place isnt cheap, but you get what you pay for, and the servings are plenty big. Great service, IMO.

A nice little French Patisserie. The breads are made with all the due care I have come to love in French pastry work. They also sport a lovely assortment of sandwiches, made-as-you-order-them. Delicately done, minor works of art. The staff is also worth mentioning: classic slightly-over-caffeined pastry-heads. Look at a cookie, give it a wink, and theyll be laughing in seconds. Not very expensive. Great sandwiches from $7.50 to $9.00. "Normal" for SF/SOMA.

Cafe Madeleine has a beautiful display of french pastries. They have small individual sizes as well as larger 8-10" cakes. My favorite is the marjolaine which has a layer of hazelnut meringue and chocolate. The mango mousse cake and fruit tart are also delicious. They also offer coffee, sandwiches, and salads. If you have a sweet tooth, try their hot chocolate. Its super rich and creamy; made with chocolate ganache and topped with chocolate whipped cream.

Pastries here are alright, but doesnt compare to those at Ambrosia, Schuberts, Tartine, etc. Also, the creme brulee I had was disappointing. It obviously has been sitting there for a while, and the caramelized sugar was not a hard shell, but a sticky mess. I dont know what they would caramelize the sugar beforehand... Overpriced for what it is.

I keep wanting to like them more, but every time I go, everything is pretty underwhelming. We had a group order today, and half the order was incorrect, while the other half tasted like it had been sitting around all morning getting soggy.

The menu is great, but go early before the lunch rush turns the staff into melted confusion. If you go after the lunch rush, many of the good daily items will be gone.

Chicken Pot Pie delicious! Love their desserts and treats. Cant go wrong with their addicting cappuccinos! Great customer service. They get busy during lunch hour!

Great local cafe with fabulous mocha and hot chocolates that are topped with chocolate whipped cream. The cakes and pastries are really good here.

Cheap salads, great for work lunches. The last time though there was way too much salad dressing on my cobb. Next time Ill ask for light dressing.
