Black Diesel is fantastic. Its in a weird little strip mall location previously occupied by first a Caribou Coffee, and later a Peets. Heres hoping this shop sticks, because they really have something special this time. First of all, all of the baristas are incredibly kind, and go out of their way in regards to service as well as explaining details about the origins and brewing of their coffees, which brings me to the other great thing about this cafe… the coffee! This place serves up *the best* coffee you will find in Ann Arbor, right up there with a certain, very small shop downtown. They obviously spend time curating their single origins, and they are very meticulous and careful about brewing here. Dont get me wrong, the local roaster shops in Ann Arbor are great, but here, the consistency and quality is at another level. Ive never gotten a bad pour-over here. They serve their drinks in unique ways that I think really takes the experience over the top. Its all really well-thought-out. My only complaints are a (somewhat) confusing menu and a couple of the tables are wobbly, but theyre more than made up for by other seating options. The combination of friendly staff, delicious coffee, and cool decor makes this place my favorite spot for coffee in town, and I dont take that phrase lightly!

The coffee is excellent! I go in the morning before work-so Ive only tried their breakfast pastries, but theyre pretty decent as well. Prices are kind of high, but nothing outrageous. I would give them a higher rating except for their customer service. For someone who faithfully visits before work it is a little frustrating how short staffed they often are. The people working there are friendly enough-but its annoying when Im late to work because the barista behind the counter wants to have a long conversation with someone instead of doing their job. I understand the importance of building a rapport with customers but theres a fine line between that and neglecting to do your job. Plus, I feel like they often have a rush around 9am-so I would expect them to have more people behind the counter.

Decent coffee, but was highly disappointed to discover that they dont serve individual pour-overs (you have to buy a full 4 cup Chemex) - especially considering every other independent coffee shop in the city will do it without a blinking an eye. Even Starbucks will make a pour-over on request! EDIT: I appreciate the recent addition of single-serving pour-overs, including V60 and Chemex brew methods. That being said, I have recently had several poor experiences with the espresso served here, which seems to be the result of untrained staff. I hope this can be improved like the pour-over was!

My favorite coffee shop. I never take time out to write reviews unless a place is 5 stars or zero. Im not a coffee expert like many people who have commented here. My goal is a hot cup of coffee at a fair price and a good place to drink it. This place has free refills on in-house regular coffee, and I can tell its not gas-station coffee, which I also drink. They seem to work hard to make sure the people who work there are friendly and welcoming of anyone who walks through the door. In a town full of eccentrics (like me) it is great to see a place where all are welcome.

Took two months to go around AA trying espresso in nearly every coffee house that serves it. This is one of the top 4 in town for sure - high quality beans and seems like the roast is very fresh, and they are remarkably consistent. And its walking distance from me!! There used to be a Caribou coffee at the same location, then Peets none of them came even close to service and quality under the new management. Glad to have this place around the corner

I love people who are passionate about their work, and was so impressed by Kirsten who explained the entire history and process of pour over to me as she made my order. She was super knowledgeable and friendly and it made me enjoy my already delicious coffee that much more! Overall a great space to hang out or get work done, with plenty of seating and a large shady patio. Ill definitely be back!

Ive been to this coffeeshop a number of times - most of the experiences has been positive. Stylish setting and strong brews define the establishment. However, tables are frequently dirty and costs are borderline extravagant. For example, my wife doesnt like coffee and will frequently get a steamer, which here costs 4 and change, the highest price out of our regular coffeeshops.

I ate here once before and had an iced chai latte - that unfortunately had very little chai tea taste. It tasted mostly of sweetened milk and ice. Not very good. From what I know, iced chai is chai tea AND milk over ice. It was also ridiculously overpriced, I think $5? Starbucks is cheaper and it actually tastes like its supposed to. The atmosphere is very nice though.

The Black Diesel team is giving this location the old college try. The coffee Ive had there is excellent, the place is pleasant, and the staff equally so. Parking remains a real challenge at this location, which is the only reason I dont go more often. If I was in the neighborhood, Id definitely be walking over to Black Diesel on a regular basis.

They dont even know how to make an iced chai. They put the ice in. They poured the cold chai. Poured the milk. Done. $4.50 for that???? It is supposed to be steamed first with milk, and then poured over ice!!! If you use enough ice it will not melt! The only thing about this place I like is the SIGN on the building

Fantastic service and delicious coffee. I needed a takeaway container for a group and they had it ready within 15 minutes of my call. When I arrived at the event I bought the coffee for, someone had brought S---bucks. A coworker dumped his full mug of that out after he tasted the far superior Black Diesel coffee.

Classy and upscale coffee perfect for the after work relaxation or chill study session. Outdoor seating is comfortable and shady with cushioned chairs. Of course the coffee is delicious, the owner takes finding the best coffee beans very seriously and, from what Ive heard, thoroughly trains the staff.

I have only been to this coffee shop once since it changed to Black Diesel. I loved the atmosphere. It has lots of seating and beautiful reclaimed wood tables. The only downside was that the drink I ordered was lukewarm when I received it. Im chalking it up to a fluke and would try this place again.

Expensive capuccino and pastries. Poor and small selection on pastries. No soft butter croissant except the Zingermans with hard shell that breaks apart on the table, embarassing us. Owner doesns care about customers wish for pastry selections. Staff are selectively nice.

I love it here. Coffee products are delicious and the staff are nice. The outdoor area has lots of covered seating and is at a main intersection so there is always stuff to look at. Internet is fast and reliable. A great spot to hang out for a morning coffee!

I like this place. The drinks are good, and I enjoy the Indonesian roast that I bought for home brewing. I really want this place to last. My only gripe is that my Americano and my espresso seemed to be served at a cooler temperature than Id expect / prefer.
