Terribly rude manager/owners. Ive had many average and two awful experiences there and should have learned my lesson after the first one. One day, nearly empty restaurant and I go in alone for lunch. I request a particular seat and they make a huge ordeal about not wanting me to sit there because they "try to save those seats" for groups. Well, not a single person came in during my 30 minute lunch. Then today, I went back reluctantly with a gf, order a lunch combo with California rolls but request an upgrade to real crab meat - which I am more than happy to pay for as I have in the past. The waiter cant process ordering something specialized, has to go talk to the manager. The RUDE manager/owner (Mimi I think) comes over and questions me repeatedly saying she asked the chef and they have never made it that way. Basically saying that I am lying about having ordered it. I tell her I most certainly did order it that way and the last time they just changed me a dollar or two more and she SCOFFS and says, "A DOLLAR?!? No WAY." I said, "I dont remember what the upcharge was, but frankly I dont care, Im WILLING TO PAY FOR IT. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?" She storms off and comes back basically yelling at me saying, "Its going to be FIVE dollars MORE" and I said "FINE!" My gf and I managed to suck it up and make it through that meal, but we are NEVER going back. Just because they have a beautifully decorated restaurant and are one of few choices in our immediate area, doesnt give them license to insult and challenge their customers. They are clearly becoming too comfortable with themselves. And you know what? The food is AVERAGE at best.

I wish you could differentiate poor-fair because this place wasnt awful, just kind of disappointing. We couldnt tell if our server was either new and painfully shy or just bored to death, but it just made things kind of awkward. Im not the kind of person who wants an "experience" when I go out to eat, and dont care at all if the server is really extroverted and chatty, but its weird when its difficult to understand him/her because of mumbling and not being sure about anything, ever, and you feel as if youre almost being avoided (were not picky or demanding and were not going to bite your head off, promise!). The food was fine, or at least Im not a snob enough to say anything bad about it, and was exactly as it was described on the menu so no complaints there. Just to end on a positive note... the decor is very nice, and everyone else at the restaurant was friendly and spoke at normal volumes lol.

My first visit was today, and I had hot and sour soup, unfortunately this was the foreboding of what was to come. One fourth of my way through the soup, my triple delight entree arrived. After finishing most of the soup i started on what was now a very cool entree. Broccoli was barely cooked, the sauce was lacking flavor and the serving was minuscule after pushing the broccoli to the side. Large serving of rice, and a lackluster egg roll. This was a luncheon offering. I will not be going back. Very disappointed in the food. The wait staff were very polite although no one approached me to see if i was satisfied with my meal.

Ive been here one time with my GF, and enjoyed a selection of maki rolls. Two of them were on their special menu and two were on the normal menu (spicy tuna and spicy salmon) We go out for sushi once every month or two and usually either go to Joshs Cafe in Annapolis or Sunshi Sono in Columbia. If the sushi is as good the second time, well save some gas and keep dining here. We were there on a late Sunday afternoon, so I cant comment on the service while theyre busy. The waiters helped each other out and we were never left in need of anything which was very nice.

1st experience was great and we ended up going back for second time. We informed waiter of a seafood allergy at the table and did I food NOT come with pieces of lobster shell. The cook accidentally dropped lobster shells in the food!?! If anything, they should have been extra cautious. They handled it really well. Well to the best of their ability. However, had there been serious allergy or even more shellfish, we would have been calling 911. For that reason I have to give 1 star. I will eat there again. As we all enjoyed our food except for the lobster scare.

Normally we order carryout sushi from Zen but our one sit down dining experience was sub par to say the least. Our server was "disconnected" and not very attentive. On several occasions we had to get up ourselves to get what we needed including remedying dirty silverware and refills for our drinks. It was clearly not the dining experience to remember. As far as the food, both the sushi and traditional Asian dishes are OK but not spectacular. The crispy honey chicken I ordered was thick with oil and fried batter with hardly any noticeable white meat chicken.

Im vegetarian and I appreciate Zens vegan menu (the drunken noodles with fried tofu are fantastic -- I have a hard time ordering anything else!). The lettuce wrap appetizer (which you can get with tofu -- just ask) is also excellent. One of the best things I like about this place is the typically very short turnaround time for carry-out orders, less than 15 minutes in my experience (sometimes the restaurant is busy, sometimes not). Id say the only comparable quality restaurant in the area is Pasta Plus in Laurel -- if you want a change from that, try Zen!

I ate here for lunch and the food was horrible. I had the orange chicken, it came served with huge chunks of white meat with the orange breading around it. At most places the chicken is cut into smaller pieces. The fried rice, if it was fried rice, didnt have that smoky wok taste and was very bland. I was going to try the Sushi but was so disappointed in the meal I didnt bother. Luckily for me it only cost $7.40 to try. For those of you who like the food here I say expand your horizon, there are plenty of places locally with better tasting food.

The sushi and fried rice are always on point. Try the new heart of burtonsville sushi special! That is one of their best specials to date! Great service and hospitality each time I am there. I usually grab a seat at the Sushi bar or grab carry-out so I never have had to experience any negative seating or reservation experience. I think in the first few months of any new restaurant there will be challenges and hurdles but Zen is making strides to keep customers happy. Great experiences all around!

Everything was good about this place except the hostess. When we were being seated we told her we wanted a booth and high chair, when she turned to get the high chair we saw only one booth and started toward it. After we sat down she had to make the comment that she meant to sit us on the other side but she guessed it was alright if we stayed. I understand trying to balance tables, but she couldve kept the comment to herself unless she really wanted us to move.
