The food is actually mediocre, but nothing that leaves you craving for more. However, the service was downright horrible. Being very close to my office, I went for lunch recently. I ordered a salad, and after i began eating, I noticed something that appeared to be an insects leg in my salad. Needless to say, I was slightly disgusted. I told the waitress, who returned the food to the kitchen. At this time, a man appeared from the kitchen with my food in hand. He said there was absolutely not an insects leg in my food, and that I was being ridiculous. I replied, "Well, thats fine, but I still do not want the salad, nor do I want anything else. Im a little disgusted." (Not that he had offered anything else, or apologized for that matter.) At this point, he becomes irate and yells at me in front of the other customers telling me that I dont know my spices and storms off as though he were a little kid throwing a temper tantrum. I was shocked! The waitress then begins to apologize profusely saying that he behaves this way often, and that he normally treats the guest in the like manner as he did me. I asked, "Who was that?" thinking he must be an emotional chef, who takes pride in his cooking and considers it an personal affront for someone not to like his food. She said, "Hes the owner." Thats right.... OWNER! Not chef, not manager, nothing less than the owner of the restaurant just treated me as though I called his wife a dirty name! I was furious. My boyfriend was pretty angry himself, but calmly paid for lunch and upon arriving at the office wrote a politely crafted email stating that our experience was unacceptable, and we were highly disappointed. Within hours, the owner calls him and cursed him out, telling him not ever to step foot in his restaurant again (not that he had anything to worry about). The grossly deficient professionalism was bad enough, but to call him and curse him out was outrageous! Needless to say, I would never recommend Cafe Americain to anyone!

Had the broiled seafood platter with stuff potato. Started off with seafood gumbo which was very bland and had little to no salt and spices. Then came the broiled seafood platter which was also very bland including the catfish and shrimp. The only thing that was average was the crab claws but they were very small. The stuff potato was very large but had an unusual taste to it (kinda like soap!) and was cold. Being that it was a seafood platter with a variety of foods you would think something would be good but its was pretty bad across the board minus the average tasting small crab claws. I brought these complaints up to the waiter and he went to get the manager. I overheard him telling the manager, her name is Holly, and she immediately told our waiter she heard us giving the complaint. Instead of the manager coming to our table to discuss our issue she literally walked by our table and didnt even acknowledge us. I thought to myself she must be coming back after she took care of another issue. We waited for 5 mins or so and finally the waiter came back and apologized and offered us a free desert. I said no and left immediately.

It is my favorite neighborhood restaurant. I am addicted to the sweet potato pecan hushpuppies and stop in to get a piece of homemade cheesecake once a week, (as a treat to myself) the Godiva is so delectable. The servers are very friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. I am from New Orleans and this is the best place for seafood gumbo and fried seafood I have found! The New Orleans mural on the wall even makes me feel at home! I have even attended a few private parties in the banquet room and were impressed with the professionalism of the staff and the catering menu. In fact, I am planning a surprise birthday party for my brother and the catering director has been so helpful in the process. I think this restaurant is one of the best hidden treasures around. I recommend it to everyone to try.

A classic of Baton Rouge! Good food and location. They regularly participate in BRs restaurant week, where their set menus are great! Otherwise, their normal menu is as reliably good. I highly recommend their boudin balls as an appetizer. The restaurant is older and is reflected in one of their rooms. If you are on a date I recommend sitting at/near the bar or going for dinner when they open up the second dining area. Its brighter and the attached restroom is considerably nicer. Their staff is friendly and attentive.

I came here with my boyfriends family for lunch. The server was nice but untidy in his apperance, as were most of the service staff. I ordered the mahi mahi and was served drum. I didnt want to make a fuss in front of my boyfriends family but I have worked around food for years, I order mahi every time I see it on a menu, and I am classically trained in the culinary arts. I know the difference. This was a druscilla seafood type scam where they are making top dollar off of lower quality fish and I will never be back.

Me and my husband came here for the first time, my family has failed me. Cafe Americain has been here for 30 years and let me tell you something...by far the most delicious gumbo I have had outside my husbands, I ordered the seafood pasta and the layer of flavors have thrown me against my chair, and the portions!! Dont get me started!! This restaurant is now our favorite , if you havent been here you need to come and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere and the amazing food they have to offer!!

My husband and I hired Cafe Americain to cater our sons wedding reception at the Old Governors Mansion. I have always admired the cuisine at the restaurant. I can say that the food and service was perfect. Everyone raved at how good everything was. It doesnt matter if its a lunch for 2 or an offsite catering job....the food is cooked with quality and passion that delight the taste buds. I am very pleased and highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.

This is a GREAT local restaurant!! My husband loves the Gouda and lump crab soup. The Red fish topped with crab meat, mushroom, and sun dried tomatoes was UNBELIEVABLE!!! My daughter had the St. Louis smoked ribs and they were so tender they fell off the bone! We took a Godiva Chocolate Cheese cake home with us and it was the best late night snack!! The service was friendly and courteous! This is a MUST try restaurant!!

Me and boyfriend was driving through Baton rouge and googled best Bloody Marys in Baton Rouge. Cafe Amercain restaurant came up. We then MapQuest the directions. OMG the food was amazing and yes so was the bloody Mary! Cafe America in restaurant is a diamond in the rough. Under rated! The waitress was a sweetheart, wish I would have gotten her name.

Finally, Great Foods with the option to have your meals GRILLED instead of everything fried, finally healthly delicoius foods in this state. A nice tucked-away place with really good high quality foods that anyone can agree really good. Unlike most restaurants louisiana, the food, quality, quantity and prices are very good and worth it...
