Ive been to Heisei several times in the past but never had I felt the need to submit a review any where as I thought most of the existing ones were on point. However this past saturday I went again with 4 other friends and the experience forced me to put this disclaimer about this restaurant. Lets start with the good. Portions were of a decent size, the quality and taste of the food are probably still one of the best you can find in Lafayette. On food alone I would rate Heisei 4/5 stars. Cons: Waiters and waitresses standing around while 4 out of 5 drinks were empty at our table. When food was served I had to point out that our glasses were all empty before the waitress went to refill them. No apologies were to be had, I think we must have sat there for 10 minutes at the minimum with empty glasses. But if it was just that I wouldnt have had to leave this review. I can empathize with a long day at work and not putting up your best at the end of your shift. What drove me to leave this review is that when it came to pay the bill a 25% gratuity automatically added to our total. There was no option to decline this addition like some other restaurants have. Not wanting to make a scene I gave them my card. When I got the receipt back for my signature I was appalled. Another hard printed gratuity 15%. At least this time they left me a blank to put in the amount I wanted to tip. I put 0 for the amount. Had the waitress let us know out of courtesy we already had gratuity added to our bill I may not have had to leave this review. Needless to say I wont be going back.

I really enjoyed the food... best sushi rolls with delicate flavors.. Great Rice soup, service was relaxed.. a bit slow for my schedule last night. The asparagus roll was sooooo excelent. I got it because of the price, but it was so good. Crunchy Roll with Red Snapper was soooo good also. Ill be back soon... better than I had last time in Chicago. Ive been there a few more times... nothing sub-par to point out. Solid place that pleases.

I eat at Heisei several times a month. For the quality of the food and service, the prices are extremely low. I have yet to have a bad experience, and sushi chef José and the entire staff have always been friendly and accommodating. The eel sauce at Heisei is the best Ive ever had, and their rolls are top-notch. In addition, their lunch & dinner boxes are a great value for tasty food. I would definitely recommend Heisei to anyone!

I love Heisei. Its not easy to find places with good Japanese food and while this place may be a tad pricey, the food it really great. The inside is nicely decorated and simple as well. They even have low tables with cushions so you can sit seiza if you choose or you can slip your legs under the table. Its a great place if you want to try something different or want to go out and splurge a bit.

Three rolls came out all tasting about the same, and not really anything special about any of them. One was over 10 dollars...Came here as an alternative to Sushi Don... Id rather have waited an hour at Sushi Don down the road. Service was meh and I left feeling like Id rather have eaten McDonalds tonight. Not nearly what it used to be before they moved. Will not be returning. Sushi Don +1.

I have had maki and nigiri-sushi all over the US and in Europe, to be honest, chef Joses sushi at HeiSei was at the top! I am anxious to try the "make-your-own-soup" dinner. If only I had found sushi-sublime sooner as I have nearly finished grad school at Purdue! Try it; I doubt that you will be disappointed. Ill have a hard time avoiding on return trips to campus :)

I review 3 instead of 4 because I have been trying to call for over an hour and cant get a hold of anyone to make a reservation. Food is great. Service not so much. Not just because of this instance, but when we are there the servers are not very attentive to the needs of our table.

The sushi itself is pretty good. Not the best Ive ever had. -2 stars because there are no sushi roll combos. You have to buy everything ala carte which gets very, very expensive. The lack of combos that include miso and salad is not on par with most sushi places.

i have tried all of them in lafayette indiana, and heisei has the best soups and rolls.. some of the other places add too much rice or make their rolls bigger, but they fill their rolls with junk fillers, like more rice.. heisei makes the best food all the time..

The food was good, but my entree came out in 10 minutes an we waited almost 45 minutes for sushi. Its frustrating to have one person watch the other eat so food doesnt get cold. Otherwise great atmosphere and friendly staff.

Fusion rolls are good like french roll, new spicy spider crab roll stuff. Do not recommend raw ones (dont think theyre fresh enough). Usually go there for ramen, udon, and rolls. Patience is required for the service.

Order the ramen and sushi combo. The ramen is very salty and noodles are just as bad as instant noodles. The sushi used to be the best in town. Now it below average.
