While the waitress was attentive and the cook was very friendly (though somewhat cheeky and off-color in his remarks), the food was disappointing, especially for the whopping price of the bill. I ordered chicken and scallops, but the scallops smelled so rotten that I couldnt bring myself to try them. I told the waitress that the scallops smelled funny and she gave me a discount, which I appreciated. But I still think the food was WAY overpriced, considering that the amount of meat/protein was tiny, and the rice was nothing but old rice, pan-fried with hard carrots, one egg (for two servings) and a liberal splash of soy sauce. The food was salty overall and not very expertly made, especially the sushi rolls, which were warm and not rolled tightly enough, and they werent even made with sticky short-grain rice as they should be. The dated 1970s decor of the restaurant was atrocious and creepy. The restaurant also smelled gross right when you walk in, like rancid frying oil and expired raw food. The price for 2 adults and one child was 85 bucks! Even if the bill came out to half of that, the food was still inexcusably mediocre. Buyer beware. Its also worth nothing that the food on the menu is NOT Japanese food and the cooks and staff are not Japanese, so if youre looking for authentic Japanese food, especially, this is NOT the place to go to.

As with most Japanese steakhouses, Asahi runs on the pricey side with most entrees costing $20+. Relative to others in Chicago this is may seem quite cheap, but considering the low cost of living in Lafayette, Asahi is in the same price range as most of the fine dining spots in the downtown section. Two factors in evaluating a Japanese steakhouse are the quality of the food and the quality of the show in preparing the food. A great show and mediocre food still can easily compensate for mediocre food and vice versa. Unfortunately, Asahi merely serves mediocre food and a two-bit show. The chefs simply cooked(well, overcooked mostly) the food with minimal artistry. A few instances of aerial food or fancy knife work would have greatly improved the experience. While many restaurants will take the time to hand write "Thank you" or some other pleasantry on the check at the end of the meal, the staff at Asahi took the time to hand highlight the "Gratuity Not Included" portion of the bill. Typically I leave a 20% tip, but after seeing that, I pulled out some loose change to get as close to 15% as I could.

everuone their was very nice and the decor was great. i ordered the fillet minijon and shrimp but got chicken instead of the shrimp... to begin the meal we were given a beef broth, which was lovely and quite possibly the best broth ive ever had and a very subpar salad. we ordered tea and water which was pretty good. my freind had the bright idea of coming there and he offered to buy an appatizer, he ordered spring rolls, they were not that good and RIDICULOUSLY priced. the experiance was what made the trip, to start off, il mention that they cook every thing right in front of you. first the cook gets oil o the grill and lights it on fire, which is cool, then he puts everything on and get an egg, does these really cool tricks and finally cracks the egg. he then cooked somemore and got this onion thing that he lit on fire and it shot flames out like a flamethrower! he then countinued to cook and whenn he finished we finally ate our meal. the food was worth a half the cost but the experiance was every penny, its not some where i plan on going to anytime soon but i did enjoy it.

Last time I was there, my meal could have been great for all I know, but I was too busy keeping the chef from trying to score with my wife....it would seem that the employees who work this chain, as this is not the only Asahi restaurant Ive experienced, seem to think that we gentlemen dine there in order to pimp out our wives and girlfriends.....if you want to have a dining experience where instead of eating delicious meat, your girl is treated as delicious meat, than I wholeheartedly recommend an Asahi Japanese Steakhouse near you....I for one, spit on their grave......for they will never, ever see another dime out of me.......just the mention of the Asahi experience these days makes me want to take an urgent shower.....pick another establishment to eat...ANY OTHER ESTABLISHMENT...!!!.....one that doesnt make you feel like your talking to a porno crew.....and I WAS gonna ask her to marry me that night.....

Asahi has a great atmosphere with the aquariums and decorations, but the food and service is terrible. My party and I ate at the sushi bar on a Saturday evening. It was not very crowded which was nice however, the sushi made my party and I sick for four days to the point where we had to go the doctor to recover. They overcharged the bill because before ordering they told us the wrong price for extra soup and salad. They refused to correct the bill for the amount they told us. They did not refund the meal after my party and I let them know we were sick from the sushi. My overall experience with Asahi Japanese Steak House was terrible and I would not recommend this to any one.

I used to only eat at Mt Fuji until I tried Asahi. This place is awesome! I go there enough that the cook knows I am allergic to seafood of all kinds and he cooks my food first then the seafood. In so many other restaurants I am rolling the dice and hoping I dont have to run to the emergency room. I love the food. I love the people. I would recommend anyone to this restaurant. All the negative reviews here must not know what to expect from a Japanese hibachi style restaurant. This is one of the best Ive ever eaten at and every city I go to I find a new one.

This restaurant has fallen on hard times. All the warning signs are evident when you walk in the front door. The entire restaurant needs a thorough cleaning. The current management has lost its focus. The food was barely edible. The smoked salmon sushi was inedible. The hibachi chef was culturally insensitive and sexually vulgar. His efforts to be a comical cook were as bad as the food. There are better Asian restaurants in Lafayette. If the health department is reading this review, they need to pay the restaurant a visit.

I ate at this restaurant 2/14/09. The food was average but the prices were very good compared to other Steakhouses I have been too. The decor was very nice. The customer service was absolutely atrocious. We had reservations for 8pm. However, we were not seated until well after 9. When I asked for the manager I was told that he had left(this is valentines day). I could continue what would be a long rant on their customer service but I would rather just suggest you choose another place to dine.

Are Japanese places owned by Japanese anymore? Seems like a good place to get a quick bite to eat if you have deep pockets. Not really a nice place to take a girl if you want to impress her, good thing she already wants me ;) We got 4 rolls of sushi for 45 bucks. We were overhearing the hibachi guy and he was pretty funny but the jokes were kind of innappropriate for a 4 year olds birthday party. I was laughing though....
