I grew up in the area and this place was a staple in the community growing up. Went back with my wife and kids when we were in town and the restaurant has definitely "crashed and burned." We were greeted by the smell of vomit when we entered the restaurant that was consistent through the entire meal. We were seated in the main area and it was painfully clear they havent cleaned or updated at all since I was a kid 25 years ago. You could still see heavy smoke residue on the walls and ceiling from when smoking was legal in restaurants many years back. They also used to have a live mariachi band playing every weekend. We sat down at about 9:30 to discover they now had the worst house band in existence that barely fit in the bar later in the evenings. They were also so loud we could barely talk sitting on the opposite side of the restaurant. Additionally, they couldnt hit a note if their life depended on it and Ive seen plenty of bad bands in dive bars over the years, lol. Moving on to dinner. My wife, who was starving when we came in, was too disgusted to eat. My 10 year old son wouldnt wash his hands in the bathroom before dinner at stated the "toilet looked cleaner." The server, who seemed like shed rather be having dental surgery, then took our order. As we were waiting for our order, I watched the bus boy/food runner clean other tables then immediately bring our table water. The large herpes sore on his mouth that he scratched made our upcoming meal that much more appetizing too (not). Shortly after, the chips and salsa came that was bland at best. Eventually the food came. It looked like it was just thrown on all the plates and equally as poor tasting. It was bland and the quality was definitely gone. Even my oldest son, who will eat anything, commented "you said this place was good dad?" Ashamed, we moved onto fried ice cream. You cant screw up ice cream right? Wrong. The fried crispy coating was now just thrown on it and not the same from the old days. Epic failure all around. We then paid the bill and left to find one a bar patron smoking a marijuana pipe right out in front of the restaurant. No one from management even noticed much less did anything about it. Yikes, never again.

THIS IS NOT AN AUTHENTIC MEXICAN RESTAURANT!!!!!!!!! The worst "Mexican" food ive ever had. i am ashamed as a Mexican that i even ate at this place. it is absurd that this place even calls itself "el sombrero." taco bell is more authentic and Mexican. if you are looking for Mexican food do not eat here, i repeat, do not eat here. unless you are not Mexican and dont know any better, but know that any place that puts cheddar cheese on beans and calls itself "el sombrero," is not a real Mexican restaurant. there are a lot of true Mexican restaurants in the Chicagoland area. please take the time to find these places because "el sombrero" is a disgrace to the Mexican and Latin American community and no one should have to suffer what my wife and i did last night. HINT: if you go about a mile south on elmhurst youll find a place on your left called "los amigos" (authentic) and if you go west on golf from elmhurst about a mile youll find on your right "las islas marias" (also authentic and cleaner than los amigos, you might actually want to sit down, may be a bit more expensive, but worth it).

I would give it minus stars if that were an option. This place was absolutely horrible.Outside of the sweet disposition of the waitress this experience was a bust. The meat portion of our meal had a bad odor to it, just wretched! It literally smelled like vomit. The rice was soggy and the beans had a crust on them as if they were sitting somewhere, uncovered for a long while. Out of 4 of us, only 1 ate a majority of the food and to no surprise was sick that evening. When we sent the food back the manager came to the table and said "ok, whats your problem?" I want to say he was rude but I took into consideration that his job must be hell having to make excuses for that crap on plate. Im almost positive that everything we sent back will be dished out again to some poor soul at a later date. What a waste of an evening. Save yourself the time, trouble and money, bypass this dump and go a bit farther down Elmhurst to the taco bell.

I see a lot of bad reviews here, I go here about twice a month or more, The food is very good, So is the service and Im a Mexican foodoholic, I see a guy here bashing everything down to the margarita glass, funny because I had two there last night and I didnt notice the glass until I read his review here now, I did notice I like my Margaretas, If you like an Americanized Mexican restaurant with chrome and neon you wont like it, if you want Great food, Great service and good drinks give it a try for yourself, My wife took me to a "Mexican restaurant" in Arlington heights, it was very new and very clean just like a new McDonalds, they played alternative music and our waitress was lily white (as am I) Now there is a Mexican restaurant that should fold up, if they havent already, Im not paid, I dont work here, but I hate to see a little gem get such poor reviews.

My family came to this restaurant to use our kids free dessert coupon for finishing the summer reading program at our library. The waitress wouldnt honor the coupon, she said we needed to buy an entree (meal). I told her we wouldnt do that because we had already eaten dinner and this was our dessert. We bought the dessert for the four of us anyway. It was disgusting. The bread crumbs on the fried ice cream tasted like panko bread crumbs used for fish fry. The waitress didnt give us any water to drink. My family will never go back to this restaurant. There was also a yucky smell inside and outside the guests were smoking, so it wouldnt have been better outside either.

Service was horrible, food mediocre at best, and when we asked for our check we were given a case with someone elses bill and $43.00 in cash inside! I was temped to take the money and run - it was that bad, but instead we called the manager over and all he could say was "Im sorry". He later gave us a little off the bill but should have made it free for all the problems we had. it was also uncomfortably cold inside. It was February and there was a big tube TV outside on a table of ash trays for the employees to take a smoke break. How much TV can you watch when it is 10 degrees outside? Maybe they have to eat out there too!
