I live in the lakeview area and have found some great Sushi place for cheaper the price and better service. This past 4th of July (2010) my roommate and I went to Navy Pier to watch the fireworks. Well we thought if we get there at around 7pm we would be able to get a table there and have a few drinks. Once we got to Navy Pier we found out that you had to have a ticket to get in because Navy Pier was at capacity. So we walked back down Illinois Street. And decided to go have a Roll and a Appetizer. So clearly it was obvious we werent trying to spend a whole lot of money because we just ate and two we were waiting for the fireworks to start. Walked in and go a table right away so this leads us to believe it wasnt busy. Our waiter took longer than expected to get our drink order and kept apologizing for how busy the restaurant was that night. But if it was so busy why were we able to walk right in and get a table? And no one was waiting outside to get into the establishment. We got our appetizer and the waiter never gave us plates to eat off from. Then the waiter said the sushi bar was backed up. Once we got our rolls we realized that our roll was not cold and was pretty warm; I never knew sushi was served warm or at room temperature, considering sushi is raw food. We ate our meals and then we waited another 20 minutes for our check. Even though our waiter had printed off the check for the table next to us and had to walk past our table to give them their checks. And once he brought us our check he said "Im sorry the service wasnt up to standards". I dont know if it was because of the way we were dressed or because we didnt order enough food but Im sure two drinks, two rolls, and a appetizer isnt all that cheap. And the rolls were on the more expensive side. I would think this waiter would treat guest like royalty if they want a good tip. For all he knows I could have been anyone important. I have had better sushi in Lakeview for the same price or lower with better service.

I went there last night for a birthday dinner. I ordered the Soshito Peppers and I found them to be a little bland minus the spice from the jalapeno pepper. I think it was supposed to have a deep fried crust but after sitting in the sauce for so long, I received it soggy. Their wasabi is pretty weak, I typically want the sensation from wasabi but Nius was geared more towards the taste. (hence fusion?) The service was typical service from any other restaurant but our waiter did interrupt a conversation my girlfriend was having with her friend to ask if they had any questions about the menu. Then leaving right after they said no, not bothering to ask anyone else at the table who was looking at the menu (me). I dont know how good the fusions portion of their menu may be, but the rolls that other people ordered were pretty good at a decent price. Theyre plates look nice, I was tempted to steal one for my own use at home. Good environment for a date, with a decent wine menu. Their bathrooms look cool. I would go back here again to order their rolls but, I wouldnt recommend this place to eat sushi. I feel that this place can be added on to the places that abuse the word fusion and weaken the word when used to describe food. Niu is better for the experience than the actual food itself, plus google need to spell Japanese right, not "Japenese".

Great service, great modern decor and great food. We made reservations for a Friday night and the interior was busy but never completely full so you could probably do with out. Patio is first come first serve and a tight squeeze so be prepared, but dining alfresco is always nice! We split an app and 3 Specialty rolls between 3 ladies and it was perfect. Rolls were cut slightly uneven and often times a little difficult to eat in one bite which definitely detracts from the experience. - Veggie Spring rolls $8 - Nothing special, and for 8 pieces the size of your thumb not really worth it. - Diablo $14 - Beautifully presented and my overall favorite, though the most difficult to eat as some pieces were large and fell apart slightly. - White Angel roll $15 - Heavy in seafood as its stuffed with large pieces of fresh tuna and topped with a thick slice of Hawaiian Escolar. - Pink Lady roll $14 - A favorite of everyone but me! Great drink menu as well, raspberry mojito was a little light on raspberry and mint but definitely had a kick! Other than the fact the our server was wearing workout spandex as pants, a huge pet peeve of mine especially at a classy restaurant, the experience was spot on!

Ill usually walk past Niu on the way to the movies, and I finally decided to try them for lunch. Especially if you havent formed an opinion on sushi yet, I would suggest trying to hit them up for lunch. Their lunch maki will fill you up at a fraction of the cost of dinner while keeping the same portions. I was able to get two maki and a pot of green tea for under $20, tax included. Unfortunately, the lunch specials are only available Monday-Friday for dine in, but thats pretty typical with most places offering lunch specials. If you dont feel like dining in, they do offer carry out and delivery through Grub Hub. The sushi was great, and the service was fast. Id definitely go back if Im in the area again for lunch. Who knows, I might even try dinner.

The interior is awesome - what laps! Piece of art. And the rest room with stone faucets! Impressive. Very quiet and cozy place. Food is very very good. Looks like they took best of japanese cuisine, added some of chinese best things (like soups or lecture tea with the smallest ever cups), plus contemporary out-of-the-box eatable decoration. Rolls are surprising - some plum wrap substituting weed, i almost eat my fingers out. And a drop of tobasco on the top. Wow! Appetizers are a wonder too - mix of seafood (including sea-urchin & caviar) in a high shot glass with eatable gold. Have you ever seen anything like that? Amazing. And gyoza is made with... Chicken. I love the one with pork and vegetables, but now my fav is chicken gyoza. Addictive place ❤️

Ive been here a few times, and I find the execution inconsistent. That especially goes for the sushi. Stick with the standard maki rolls if you really must order sushi. For the specialty rolls, the Mellow Yellow maki is decent but it is on the sweeter side, FYI. I usually stick with the entrees. You cant go wrong with the curry dishes. And thankfully, they serve brown rice. The noodles in their dishes have a weird texture, but everything else in that dish is usually spot on. Come here on Mondays for half priced cocktails. Their play on the Old Fashioned is pretty good and strong!
