Although there isnt a lot of authentic Japanese food on the menu, the food they do serve is pretty darn good. The sushi, however, is the best Ive ever had in this area! My mom hates Asian cuisine and always has the worst experiences eating out. Here she is able to eat at the Hibachi Grill where she can have steak and shrimp, its cooked right in front of her so there cant be any mistakes, and it comes right off the grill onto her plate so it cant be served cold. You can sit in front of the sushi bar and watch them make flawless food art, at the gorgeous lit up bar, at a regular table or booth, in a tatami room for added privacy (ideal for a party or date) where you can even sit on floor cushions like a more traditional Japanese style, or at a hibachi grill (you may have to sit with other people you dont know) and watch the entertainment as your food is prepared right in front of you! I have worked on and off at Umi since 2011 as a server. I love waitressing and training the new servers to be knowledgeable, helpful, and 100% focused on customer experience. I did have some issues with the manager at times for being unreasonable and rude to some customers, but they just recently left. I am now back as a bartender and though the servers arent up to my standards, the food is still wonderful! I love getting something to eat before or after a shift here and its always worth it even though employees dont get much of a discount. Overall, even on off days, it is a place I highly recommend (especially for lunch if you want something a little cheaper or love sushi at a great price) for families (kids can get a free meal on Sunday), college students (get a discount with their Mane Cards), and dates (have tons of sharing options and a romantic atmosphere).

My girlfriend and I visited this for a date night a few days ago and we had the best dining experience we have ever had. We were seated at a decent time, though they did offer us a regular table if we wanted one quicker. We were decided on having the hibachi experience and it was definately worth it. Our chef was very interesting to watch and fun to talk to! He made more jokes than I could count and put a smile on every face around our grill. I didnt catch his name, but Im sure every chef at UMI is top notch. As for the food, my girlfriend and I loved it. We had a bit of sushi, some calimari, and steak and shrimp hibachi to top it off. I would like to mention the extra work the staff did for someone else sitting next to us to ensure they did not have any problems with their meal due to their allergy problem. Very well done! Not every place seems to ask, so knowing that they are concerned about the safety and comfort of their customers is great.

I love this place! They play piano or instrumental music instead of the usual loud rock/pop music that other restaurants play. The atmosphere of this place is so refreshing, and is one of the many reasons I love to go there. We recently went there for lunch with our kids for a little splurge. We brought the kids (ages 1 and 3) something separate to eat because theyre picky. The waitress never said anything about us bringing outside food, just commented on how precious our kids are and took our order. Most restaurants are not as polite about that! We customed our orders, and everything came as ordered and was delicious! The waitress was very intentive even though it was very busy. I highly recommend going for the lunch sushi special. I like the California roll, spicy crab roll, dynamite roll, and steak teriyaki. My husband likes dynamite roll and the white tuna nigiri. We both enjoy the ginger salad and the hibachi chicken as well.

I took my daughter and granddaughter to dinner 5/14/15, had the worst service, and the food was less than desirable. Myself I order the Bento box with Chicken Teriyaki, the chicken tasted like rubber and the sauce did not taste like chicken Teriyaki, everything in the bento box was bland, no taste, my granddaughters was the same she ordered the chicken Teriyaki yet she was hungry after her game ate it anyway yet she said didnt taste like Teriyaki, Chicken fried rice my daughter had was the only thing with flavor that tasted ok. Waitress was told yet she didnt even offer us anything else, oh plus my granddaughter didnt even get her rice with the chicken teriyaki. Not sure if it was a off night for them but as far as Im concerned I will not go back!

Went for lunch here today, my husband and I usually come here quite often but it seems like its becoming worse with each visit. I ordered the sushi lunch special with spicy salmon, philadelphia and a veggie roll. Something was way off with the salmon, super gummy and tasted like you licked the back of a refrigerator. I let the server know and she came back to tell me it was from yesterday. It tasted as if it were from last week! Sad to say but we will not be going back after this experience.

First time here yesterday with a new friend. The waiter brought two orders of spring rolls when we only asked for one order. He only came by our table once in the two hours we were there. For the price, it was mediocre sushi (way too much rice and very little fish). The miso was weak. It was a bit warm in there. After an hour they stared us down as if to say, "Ok, get out now!" So, with mediocre sushi and shabby service, we will not be back.

Other than the Hibachi, which scared my Grandson, and the fact that children eat free, theres really nothing special about it. Its decent, but over priced. The wait staff is generally courteous, but extremely busy. It is SO LOUD that conversation is difficult unless you are sitting right next to someone - so dont go as a party of more than 2 or 3 because tou cant hear people any further away than a couple of seats.

A very good Japanese style streak house, especially for this area! Prices arent bad. You can sit at the grill with other families, or sit in a private both and order off the menu. The best deal for a couple is to get an appetizer and split The Umi, which is scallops, lobster, fillet, vegetables, and rice. They also start you of with your choice of Miso soup, or clear soup, and a ginger salad.

Gorgeous atmosphere and decor. Fantastic food. I cant say enough about how much I love this place. The staff is so friendly and helpful. I eat there 2-3 times a month. The value for the amount of food you get is great. I especially love the sushi. Ive also been to the hibachi grill more than once and the chefs are so entertaining. It is one of my favorite places to eat in Florence.

I so loved this place when it first opened. I would have given it 5 stars. The wait staff is friendly and generally competent. The sushi is great. But the clientèle is what you would find at a local food trough. If youre looking for great food at a decent price, this is your place. If youre looking for a classy, romantic place to impress a date or spouse, there are better options.
