I have to say I was surprised by this place. Located in what I would consider the most highly touted culinary areas of the city (between the new Duck Duck Goat and The Publican) this unassuming chicken shack delivers a great fried chicken that deserves to be spread around the world. The chicken is nothing short of fantastic and affordable to boot. It is fresh and the white meat is not dry at all. But where this chicken flourishes is with the crust, which is probably the best Ive ever had (sorry mom). The crust has a bit of a red tinge which indicates the spicy bite that you will taste immediately, after that tinge you will enjoy a crunchy, textured, and well attached skin/crust combo that is simply a joy to the mouth and a combination that I imagine is hard to pull off based on my experience with fried chicken. The sides are serviceable in that I did not have the BEST mac and cheese Ive ever had but it was good, and did not take away from the star of the show here: that chicken. Also, I dont know if the other locations have a bar, but this one did, with a decent draft selection and a good liquor and bottled selection. I have to say, as a parting note, I was surprised to learn that this is a Memphis chain with 20-ish locations as it seemed like it was put together with the care of a chef with a dream of selling chicken in his one modest location. Just to clarify, this is not a bad thing at all as this chicken deserves to be shared beyond the Fulton Market District, its that good.

Had never been before; we live in the neighborhood and wanted to check it out. We were trying to make it here for 2 weeks and when we finally made it in today I was disappointed. The food was fine, just as you would expect for fried chicken, but the portions were small and we found a hair in the potato salad. I figured the portions were small so I ordered an a la carte chicken tender that never came. My issue was with the service. The waitress doubling as a bar tender was disengaged and looked pissed off from the start. Its always "impressive" when waitresses dont write orders down, but this is the reason why I didnt get my additional tender. If you cant remember the order get a piece of paper. When we asked for a new side of potato salad due to the hair in the food she obliged, but didnt seem to care or have any reaction at all. First timers at a restaurant tend to have questions with how things work, whether its pay at the table or pay at the counter, what sodas they have etc. These questions dont deserve condescending reactions especially when the restaurant is empty. Really wanted to like this place which is why Im compelled to write a review, but ended up hating it, leaving a little hungry and not wanting to ever return. Go to the Chicken Shop, Green Street Meats, Parlor Pizza Bar or even Harolds Chicken before you come here.. In this neighborhood there are too many people that care about their restaurants and your food for you to come to Guss.

I came here once to check out what I heard about an amazing fried chicken place that opened up in the West Loop....I came back two weeks later for more. Would I say it was the best fried chicken in Chicago? Not sure, but it was pretty damn good fried chicken and Ill gladly go back for some more again and again. First time I went, the food came out quick. The second time I went, it seemed like a much longer wait. Either way, the chicken was near perfect. Juicy, not-dry, and crispy. The sides were great, especially the mac & cheese and baked beans. Good sweet tea, too. Staff was exceptionally friendly, also. Come here and come again.

I grew up going to the original Guss in Mason, TN, the one thats surrounded by cotton fields and is the birthplace of the World Famous recipe. Ive eaten at Guss here in Chicago now 3 times and the recipe is consistently just as good as its supposed to be. We even had it catered for Mardi Gras at my office in the Loop and it was fantastic and easy to have it provided here. Great job to the owner of the Chicago location!

I first went in to place my order, they told me to take a seat and someone will be right with us. So we waited for about 20 minutes no one so I said something and they for got about us. So the waiter took are order and he said the sodas would be free this fool decided to add everything together as one price , like I wouldnt know . The food was good but thats the last time Ill ever go that one again in Chicago.

Amazing fried chicken, this is one of the better fried chicken places Ive tried. I got the 2 piece breast and one wing, but even for a big guy like me, that was a bit too much food, I couldnt finish it. The chicken is juicy and perfectly crispy on the outside. If I lived closer to it and didnt have to go out of my way, Id be at this place at least once a month. Their fried pickle and okra was also amazing.

Absolutely love this place! Everything is hot and fresh and the service is SUPER fast. No need to worry about a wait if youre starving. We were able to get right in at 12:00pm on a Sunday. My favorite side dish is the coleslaw. It tastes exactly like the coleslaw my grandmother used to make and I havent had anything comparable since years ago. I highly recommend getting a root beer float for desert.

Best chicken ever, period end. When I first found Guss in Memphis about 10 yes ago I was hooked. Now I dont have 2find excuses 2drive 500 miles 2get chicken anymore! This chicken is spicy, but not overpowering. Crisp, because it is fried in peanut oil I am told. And hot, made 2order. U will love me once u try it, but hate me because NO chicken will EVER come close to tasting this good!

Worst place weve gotten food from in Chicago since our arrival 3 days ago. Chicken arrives over cooked, fried pickles burnt, all food cold, & no eating utensils. I love spicy food but chicken is overly spiced, baked beans are way too sweet, and coleslaw is pathetically bland. Poor attitude by restaurant staff when asked what happened. Horrible experience, wont order from Guss again.

Really delicious chicken if you like a good amount of spice and a juicy bird! Mac n cheese was nothing special, but may have been improved if served just a touch hotter. Slaw heavy on the mayo and needed a bit of salt and pepper buy was then a great compliment to the chicken. Definitely a well priced and worth it chicken shack!

It was nice to have a Guss up here when I am so used to it from home in Arkansas. The Chiken and Mac & cheese were on point The service was lacking. If you are okay with bad service and great food I would recommend it. If you are not I would recommend trying the original Memphis location if you are ever in that area.

Chicken so juicy, tender, and with enough kick in the spices to really let you know that Guss is world famous for a reason. Decent sides and starters (I tried the baked beans, mac n cheese, and fried green tomatoes) but the chicken is the real star here. Hands down the best fried chicken Ive had in Chicago.
