I have been to nearly every spot in Chicago for a vegetarian or vegan to eat. I have had plate after plate of food, hoping that they would sate a deeper hunger for food that feels transcendent, full of memory and yet with newness and a full breadth of taste and texture. In short, I want a plate of food that will blow my mind. Funny enough, that plate comes served on a cafeteria tray in a big room usually at least half full of diners from every background imaginable. "One dal, veggie thali, and a chapati," they say and set my order on the counter. Ive been waiting with bated breath for the giant pile of food that it takes two trips to carry--and cost me less than eight dollars, providing more than enough food for two people to stuff themselves silly. The veggie thali allows you to dip your toes into the varied veggie dishes they offer: a mixed veggie dish that somehow tastes juicy, channa masala that beats every lunch buffet out of the park, intensely savory cooked spinach. And then theres the dal, the one so good that we order a full portion just to explore its toasted cumin and curry leaf richness. The full portion of dal? $1.99. Add a 75 cent nan or chapati, and you have one of the citys most enviable lunches around. I try to be objective. But when they charge that little for food this compelling, its difficult to say anything else: this is the best place for the Chicago vegetarian. Its my favorite restaurant in this city, and I expect to keep coming back for another bowl of dal.

Ive been going to Ghareeb for about 6 years. I was going 1-2 times a week but today I wish I didnt. The chilli chicken was nowhere near as spicy as it usually is, instead it tasted like they dumped a bunch of salt in it. My channa masala sauce had little flavor and was much more runny. The channa was very hard, undercooked. The Naan was burned badly on one side. The bread pudding was very oily and seemed much more like bread crumbs this time. The lady didnt want to pour my chai tea. She said its right there, you can pour it yourself but it was on the other side of the counter and I couldnt reach it, not to mention there being a bunch of plates in the way. The next customer had a guy take their order and he poured 2 for his customers. When it was time to leave the lady wanted to give me a foam container for channa which has a lot of liquid and needs a lid. She said the plastic containers are not for customers (who are they for?) so I asked the guy and he kindly gave me one. I felt like i was an inconvenience to her by giving my business to the restaurant. However the chai tea was very good. The lady (Turkish) was extremely rude but there was a very nice Indian girl there who was extremely polite and had good service as well as the Paki guy. Usually the staff is very kind and helpful but this was horrible. If it was my first time there, Id never go back.

If youre looking for authentic tasting Indian cuisine, at a low affordable price, with substantial portions, look no further. This place offers all the above, which is pretty awesome. The curries are really tasty, with just the right amount of spice for heat and coconut milk for taste. Regardless of whether youre having fish, chicken or lamb, they all taste really good with the curries that come with it. The naans and pratas are also very nicely done, and nothing beats using your hand to dip them into the curries. They also serve lassi, which is a refreshing yogurt drink, a must try! The only downside about the place is that it does look a little worse for wear, the decor is not going to win any awards or be featured in a magazine anytime soon but the excellent food more than makes up for the lack of ambiance. Also, be warned that you might come out smelling like curry after your meal :)

Now let me make this loud and clear this is the 1st place in my last 7 years I ate a complete Indian meal under 7$/person period. I do not care about all those so-called cleanliness freaks writing bad reviews, I did not see any cockroaches nor any kind of uneasy dirt around the dining area (obviously its not a michelin star). We ordered chilli chicken, frontier chicken, chana masala, thala gosht with parathas and Chicken biriyani. Pretty much everything was good and the portions were satisfying for 4 hungry guys. To be frank I was indeed impressed with the service which was more on a friendly level rather than on a submissive one which we have come to expect.Understand one thing this is a desi joint in a desi area so once u enter in forget about the fact that you are in US imagine yourself in India or Pakistan and you will be able to enjoy the true aura.

ما شاء الله Very tasty and minimalistic. "No frills" is definitely an accurate description. Prices are also super cheap, especially if you get vegetarian items. And its 24/7 which is another plus. They only take cash but they have an ATM inside. I had the butter chicken on one visit and gyros parathas on another visit and both times it was very tasty. They dont have fountain drinks but they do sell bottled and canned beverages, and of course water is free. And alhamdulillah they dont play music! Whereas unfortunately most "halaal" places do. They also have a wudu area seperate from the bathrooms. The bathrooms were dirty though when I went around 4-5pm, and I imagine its probably worse in the late night. But thats a minor complaint, this place is great especially if you need halaal food on a budget.

A delicious, inexpensive, cash only, slightly dank restaurant that opens up to your 24 hour cravings. I can imagine plenty of err...kite flying individuals coming in at night for their heavily spiced wants. Whenever one thinks of Indian restaurants, usual stereotypes come to mind: heavy dark curtains, some sort of mauve/purple carpet, oh and expensive. Not so here! Come with 10 dollars and feast. Or just come with 3-4 and eat your fill as well. The biryani is dry and isnt really my thing however the vegetarian plates are fantastic, I would just stick with that. Oh and if you can help it, get all the naan up front as its cheaper the first time when you order with it instead of separately. The good: cheap, 24 hrs, fantastic value for veggie combo plates The not so good: cash only, the biryani

I just visited Ghareeb Nawaz today after my initial visit 7 years ago and the food is still as good as it was back then. The prices have increased a little, but it is still a great deal considering the quantity of food served. The portion sizes are huge and the biryanis are quite literally a mountain of rice! The goat and chicken dishes are bursting with flavor and the naans are fresh and gigantic! Quite honestly you cant go wrong with anything on the menu, but the exceptional items are Frontier Chicken, all the Biryanis, Chili Chicken, Gyros Masala and Achar Gosht. The prices are extremely reasonable and they probably only accept cash, to keep their prices low. Ill definitely hit this place up if Im ever in Chicago!
