I was just waiting for Gordon Ramsey to walk out into the dining room any second and close down the place! Hate to bust anyones bubble but not only is this not authentic German food (I was born & raised there) it is also poorly prepared! When you pay $68 for an appetizer and 2 entree dishes you expect it to be worth it. I understand that this is a tourist area and that high prices are common, but one would hope for good food in return! An authentic Schnitzel should have a nice crispy breading on the outside. THESE were soggy and the breading didnt stick to the meat at all. It appeared as though they were prepared ahead of time and then just reheated. My husband had a cheese schnitzel which is basically a schnitzel covered in cheese, however theirs had such a thick and rubbery layer that you were able to roll it off the schnitzel!! The red cabbage that I ordered as a side dish not only looked very unappealing but tasted awful as well. Our appetizer was brought out with our main course, which leads me to believe our waiter wasnt paying attention. The restaurant itself was very dirty and outdated. With only four tables occupied one would think the server would be more attentive! I am highly amazed that this place is actually still in business considering the extremely poor quality of their food! As a German I would have liked nothing more then to give a German restaurant a good review, however honestely there is nothing good to say about this establishment. I ate at the "Bodensee" restaurant down the street the night prior and their food was truly authentic and delicious.

There are many restaurants in Helen and I would recommend going elsewhere. Very overpriced food. Very slow service despite a nearly empty restaurant on a Wednesday evening. It took a long time to get the waters and beers we had ordered. The beer I finally decided on was poured in a dirty glass (you could tell by all the bubbles on the side). Our waiter also brought out two of the wrong sides for two of our plates. The food wouldve been OK had it been priced less than $10 a plate, but given that most food is priced over $20 it deserves a poor rating. I had a fried pork plate that was terribly salty. Horseradish was watery. My girlfriend had a prime rib sandwich which consisted of a very well done slab of meat (not sliced) on top of a couple pieces of bread. It was definitely prepared much differently (and worse) than any other prime rib sandwich Ive seen (which is a very common and easy sandwich). I saw a worker cleaning other tables by spraying all over the table without removing the salt and pepper shakers. Im sure the cleaner was food-grade, but it just didnt look very good knowing that all the table condiments on our table probably had cleaner sprayed in it at some point. Ive certainly been to worse restaurants, but I think this is one you should avoid given all the others in the area. Its been around for 50 years but I think its getting away from its roots after a few changes in management.

We brought a group of 25 on a Sunday after the lunch crowd @ 2:00PM. They outside was empty and the manager told us he could accommodate us no problem. It took over 25 minutes to just get drinks which should have been a clue. Food finally came 2 hrs after arriving!!!! Half of the orders were wrong and some even missing 1/2 of the burger (the buns!!!) The manager acted like it was no big deal and brought a half a bun back 15 minutes later toa cold overcooked patty. Now on to the bill.....after explaining our dismay to the waitress and manager they brought out the bills about 20 minutes later and added 20% gratuity and did nothing on the bill for all the poor food. We were just short of outraged. The poor waitress then said the manager had been "kind enough" to take her gratuity off the bill but refused to discount the food. He would not even come to us and discuss the problem with the meal service/food quality. WHAT A JERK! He uses his employees as his excuse for being a horrible manager!!!!!! 2.5 hours of the worst restaurant experience ever! NEVER PATRONIZE THIS ESTABLISHMENT!!!!!

“Best in German Food in Helen, Ga! If you like German Food then you’ll love the Hofbrauhaus. The food is made to order and is outstanding, top shelf! We have been to Germany and this food is worth every dime. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The Chef was real nice! We also came back after eating in other Restaurants in Helen an found that the "Hofbrauhaus" is the only place to eat in Helen, Ga. We even had a wonderful meal there for Thanksgiving dinner, 2014. Note: If you didn’t like the food then you shouldn’t of stopped in to this fine German Restaurant! "Timing is everything when eating-out so the earlier you arrive then the better the food and service is in any Restaurant, America or in Germany!!! And so what if the server didnt know what Gluhwein was... "Its Helen, Ga for God Sakes! Buy your own wine and bring it with you next time and just have them warm it up! Da! Thanks for the good service too! The Shields family

My husband and I visited Thanksgiving weekend. The scenery from the outside was beautiful, with the river flowing and the houses facing the restaurant. The service was awful. It was close to 5 pm when we arrived and only saw 3 servers. Our server did not know what gluhwein was, and she didnt seem knew to the place! I explained to her what it was and she handed me a bottle and asked me to smell it to see if it was the right stuff! REALLY?? Top that off with her serving it less than luke warm. Then we didnt see her or anyone else again to order food if we had wanted to stay. The decor was great on the inside, lots of history. The servers need a lesson on how to do their jobs and managment needs to be on the floor monitoring the situation. We couldnt find anyone to complain to. We had to hunt down someone to give our money to.

My girlfriend and I showed up around noon. We sit outside and get to view all of the people tubing down the river. While watching that we order a beer. The waiter informs me that we cannot drink until 12:30pm because of Helens laws. We say that is fine and order a pretzel. The pretzel came out cold like it wasnt cooked all of the way. After that I order the open prime rib sandwich and she orders the chicken schnitzel sandwich. The entrees were great. My issue really was the staff. After our entrees were finished it took over 30 minutes to get a check and a to go box. While he said he was really busy he only had one other table. Lastly the prices were wrong and the check was supposed to be closer to $40 ended up being over $60. I would order to go next time and just sit in the water on a rock. Would have a much better time.

Good, but way over-priced. Potato salad and red cabbage were mouth watering... better than the too-often-tweaked recipe thats been passed down from my Dutch ancestors. Potato cakes a bit over-cooked. Daughter really enjoyed her wurst platter. My meat & cheese platter was somewhat disappointing (very skimpy on the cheese). Decor is interesting to us history buffs. Apparently we were there on a slow day/time (Thursday, June 2), and were the only table in that part of the restaurant (inside, overlooking the river and the tubers). Service was slow, but we were in no hurry. Barely made it through the meal on the water & tea that were never refilled. Two adults and one pre-teen, and the bill was $65. No alcohol nor desserts. Id recommend it to someone willing to blow money on some good German cuisine.
