Yesterday after looking at some real estate we decided to try Hula Bay. We found it on Google while looking for a waterside place to have a few drinks and an appetizer. What we found was by far the worst example a BAD service that I have ever experienced at any Tampa area eatery. We were greeted (not) by a surly hostess that seemed put out that she had to leave her post. We then sat on the outside deck (nice) under a mister that just dripped water on us. After sitting there for 20 minutes with service people walking by us our server approached. After her telling us how hot she was (temperature not looks) we asked to be seated at a different table due to the dripping water. She pointed across the deck and said "you can sit over there". We moved and sat another 20 minutes with no service! Finally another female host came from inside and worked her way over to our table. I thought finally we are going to at least get a drink but no I was wrong. Her first statement was "Did you seat yourselves?". Somewhat astonished I explained our story to her. Without the slightest hint of understanding she proceeds to inform us that the table we are now sitting at is "reserved". There were three empty tables around us! I told her that one of the servers had instructed us to this table and she then asked me to point her out. Her words were " I will have to move you as soon as we clear another table". After another 15 minutes we had enough of this BS and got up and left. On my way out I told both of the (hostesses?) that this was a joke and that they really needed to get their act together. Needless to say I would never go back. But the real statement that I want to make to the management of this place is "Who does the training (or lack of) for your staff. They have to be the rudest, most unhappy looking, could care less staff that I have EVER encountered. Good luck in this economy where there are many other MUCH better choices of where you can spend your money!

Customers beware!!!! The service is more spotty that the spots on a dalmatian! I used to come here quite frequently and have noticed a sharp decline in service! First experience invloved over 25 mins before we received a server to take a drink order. Two people at my table didnt even get the correct drinks. The second bad experience included the party of 6 I was with receiving their order and the server forgetting to put mine in. It was explained that the establishment was "busy." Three tables inside, 6 people at the bar (with their own bartender) and 4 tables occupied outside doesnt justify "busy" after counting 4 servers. The third experience was when I asked for a well done burger and received a medium rare....I guess it was opposite day and i missed the memo. The food is good for the price and is the only reason I gave it 2 stars. If you like to wait 25 mins to get your drink, run the risk of possibly getting served the incorrect drinks, being told lies for their mistakes as a coverup, or gambling with meals you didnt order then this is the perfect place to go! Good luck and hope your experience is better than mine.

First time here. We ordered the raw oysters, sushi as well as the seared tuna steak. We wont be back. The sushi was extremely over priced for what you receive. We are not cheap by any means and will pay $16+ for a roll of sushi, which we did tonight but were highly disappointed. The raw oysters which we highly enjoy anywhere tasted like mud and at $15.95 per dozen, we should have honestly sent them back, but we arent the type of people to have the items taken off of our bill. The so called "seared tuna" was nothing of "seared", it was completely cooked through, gray and extremely small for the market price of $27 that we paid for it. DO NOT EVEN bother going here unless you plan on drinking and not eating. It was funny to notice after the fact that we had ordered food, that the majority of people surrounding us were only drinking and not eating.. Take that into consideration if you plan on going out for food at this place. We wont be back and do not recommend this place to anyone. I will say the servers were incredibly nice but I feel bad for all the complaints that I am sure they receive from other customers.

We just finished our lunch. Being from Hawaii and have eaten many times at the various Dukes restaurants in Hawaii, I was skeptical of how authentic the food would be compared to Hawaiian local food. I was very pleased with the food. I had the Chicken Katsu ( a traditional local staple in Hawaii) and my husband had the Hula burger. We both enjoyed our meals. We did have to wait a little while for the food to arrived, but enjoyed the scenery and each others company. This restaurant is not a fast food eatery, so dont expect your meal to arrive quickly. If you want quick, Burger King is up the road. Our waitress was Kristen, She was so sweet, polite, and explained the menu and the origin of the restaurant to us. She always checked on us and refilled our drinks within minutes of us finishing our first drinks. We also met Chef Dan and he was open to suggestions on the menu that we offered and was very pleasant. The Brunch buffet looked very good and noticed that they were always being refilled quickly. Will definitely dine here again.

We have been here 3-4 times now and enjoy it. In the Spring/Fall it is nice to sit out on the deck enjoy a cold one, the breeze and the view. I have had the sliders, the Hawaii 5-0 burger, and the Hula Burger, all of them pretty good. My wife has had a few of their Sushi creations and has enjoyed them. The service has been good each time we have been here. If you are looking for a cool place to hang out on the water with good food I would recommend it. There is another bar next door, Dukes, we havent checked that out, but nice you could bounce between the two if you wanted. Parking can be a little crowded, but I usually drop of the wife and daughter and park in front of the High and Dry on the street, its only a short walk, and I reward myself with a cold draft beer ;) While the menu is not over-flowing with options, I feel the ones they do have are good. This time we tried the Kickin Shrimp appetizer, you could probably eat that as a small meal alone. We will be back, and certainly recommend to our friends!

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. We waited an hour and 45 mins for service before finally walking out. Ive never had to walk out of a restaurant. My fiancé asked the bar for drinks and menus 10 mins in and was waved away. The female bartender was snotty and told him our waitress would bring them. I watched our waitress lazily talking to two customers who had already paid for more than 20 mins before I asked the male bartender if we were sitting in the right section, "because weve been here a looong time and havent even gotten drinks or menus." He got the waitresses attention and told her to take care of us. She shot him a nasty look and turned her back on us. The male bartender tried to save a little face, brought our dog and us some water (we were dying of thirst) and a menu. We waited another few minutes before finally leaving. We had arrived at 10 am and left 15 mins before brunch was due to be over without even a hello.
