TLDR: Do not go for anything other than the sushi. I went with my fiancee for a date night. The atmosphere was great and we were seated very quickly. This is the primary reason this isnt a one star review. Proceeding step by step through the meal: Appetizer: Gyoza: We ordered vegetable because I cant eat meat, and we got the pork. That was disappointing, but accidents happen and we didnt complain. They came out luke warm, which was the first bad sign. The flavor was underwhelming and way too sweet. If they add a little bit of rice vinegar to the sauce and more ginger and napa to the gyoza themselves, they would be much better. Soup: We both got the miso. It is a white miso, which has a subtler flavor, which I enjoy. However they failed to re-hydrate the wakame prior to adding it to the broth, leading to it being a little hard and looking very unappetizing. We both were able to eat it and enjoy, but the spoonfuls with wakame all tasted wrong. Salad: typical greens, cucumber, and ginger dressing. Nothing special, but it isnt expected to be. Entrees: Unagi Don: The unagi itself was good. A sign that their sushi is likely high grade (as stated in other reviews and based on looking at other tables). However there was not nearly enough eel sauce, so after about 6 bites, you were left with a ton of just white rice. While it was decent, I ended up with a stomach ache after eating it, and for that reason would not order again. Chicken Hibachi: 3 parts: Chicken:The chicken itself was very tender, but the sauce left us with a "not quite right" taste. It was essentially soy sauce with a small amount of teriyaki. No ginger, garlic, white pepper, sesame, or any of the other things you expect in a sauce when you order chicken hibachi. Vegetables: The vegetables were advertised as "button mushrooms, zucchini, onions, and peppers." While they were cooked adequately, the amount of each vegetable you got was 50% onions, 40% peppers, 7% mushrooms, 3% zucchini (literally only 2 small pieces on the whole plate). While I understand the desire to cut costs, this was extremely disappointing when you expect the plate to at least pretend to give you even amounts and they cut the healthiest of the vegetables significantly. Fried Rice: This was literally just white rice tossed in oil with frozen vegetables (peas and carrots). It had absolutely no flavor. There is too much to be improved on for it to be worth elaborating.

I went there when it was first opened, maybe the first month. The place is lovely and has a cool dark relaxing vibe. I was asked what I wanted to drink and I asked for a coke. I was then brought another one when I was not even half way through the first one. I cannot drink too much soda ( I only drink water now ) and I told the girl I did not want a third...she brought me one anyway. I told her to take it back. When the bill came I was charged for refills!! Omg if I had known that I would not have never ordered the first one. Who does that?? I absolutely refused to pay for the third one, drinks added nearly six dollars to my bill. I went there recently again and only got water. All the food we had was fine and the gals accommodated us in a funny request for seating and didnt blink an eye when I told her we were kind of in a hurry and needed our food fast as possible and our check brought on out before we were done. I am glad I gave it a second chance that silly soda thing nearly kept me away forever...oh the first girl never brought my credit card back until I reminded her twice either...I guess she was new and I notice she does not work there anymore. This place is ok and not bad now.

Somehow the pringles did not make it into the menu description as an accompaniment to the tuna tartar, yet there they were, silently laughing at me, as if aware that I was about to drop $250 on cat food grade sushi in North Florida. Service was incredibly slow, and the pacing of our food delivery was awful. We waited about 35 minutes for our drinks after we ordered. We were never given enough utensils or small plates/soy sauce dishes. Our entrees were so spaced out that the first person in our party was already finished with his meal by the time the rest of us were being served. One of our rolls came long after everyone in the party was finished. And not a single plate was cleared from our table once finished. A server should never walk away from the table empty handed if there is something to clear. Have a wine training class for your servers. It was kind of sad and awkward watching ours struggle to open a bottle. The tempura was heavy, cold and overbattered. The sushi and sashimi did not taste fresh. For the very high prices we paid, the service and quality was shockingly terrible.

The restaurant should be a 2 star for food but the only reason why I gave a 3 star, was because Sun our server was excellent. Appetizers started with shumai, which looked like frozen food streamed up and the inner meat was not what shumai should be made of. We eat dim sum regularly, but this was nothing we have seen or tasted. We ate two of the 6 that came with the dish. The other appetizer was tuna with yuzu sauce, which tasted like 1 day past its expiration date. As an avid fisherman, my husband knows what fresh tuna should taste like and that was certainly suspicious. Our main course was the shrimp tempura roll which was good and the only thing we actually liked eating. The tuna hand roll was so boring it left me wanting more, it needed avacado, scallion, etc something besides rice and tuna. The spicy escolar roll was not even a roll, it was more like a triangle and the roll wasnt even that tightly rolled. I will not be eating here again unless new chefs are featured.

Quite honestly, one of the best sushi establishments I have ever been to. If you are a sushi connesiour or even a sushi beginner, look no further. I have eaten at every sushi restaurant in Tallahassee and most every city I venture to including Atlanta, Orlando, Savannah, Jacksonville, Tampa, Memphis, and more. Sakura is easily in the top 3 to 5 across them all for sushi. I eat here at least once a week. Beautifully prepared plates with very generous portions of fish. I am a raw sushi fanatic and their sushi specials and customary sushi rolls are very clean, not coated in sauce, and the ingredients always complement each other. If you are not thoroughly impressed with their sushi, you either dont like sushi or you are looking for your lost mind! Enjoy!

Ive been going to sakura since they opened so ive had extensive experience with their good, customer service, quality etc. Their sushi is very good. Quality of fish is good and overall its just a lot tastier and preferable over the other sushi joints in town. Though.. my only problems with this restaurant is that the sushi is very very expensive and they really dont give you enough for what you pay for. Hey, that might just be a byproduct of this bad economy but who knows. My other issue is the actual physical restaurant itself. Its not pleasant to eat there, which is why I usually get takeout. Its like one big room with no dividers for privacy. Overall the atmosphere is sorely lacking. But its the quality of the actual sushi that keeps me coming back.
