First I would like to say that this is my Grandsons favorite place to go. So, needless to say, when I asked where he would like to go for his birthday this is the place he wanted to go. He loves the showmanship of the chefs, the onion fire ring , tossing the shrimp in his mouth, etc. None of which happened. There were other chefs around really showing off their skills, laughing, and overall showing their customers a good time. Our chefs remark to the loudness of the other chefs was, "they are trying too hard. Im more laid back." My husband said, "he is so laid back I think he is asleep." Needless to say my Grandson was a little disappointed. When our waiter arrived to take our order I had told him it was my Grandson s birthday. He told me that he would need ID for the Free Birthday Meal. I said hes 12, he doesnt have an ID. He said he would have to ask his manager. After conferring with the manager he came back and said, does he have a school ID or Facebook page? To which I said no. He is not old enough for a Facebook page (which you have to be 13) and his Elementary school does not issue ID. We were then told sorry but no free dinner. I was throughly discussed with the whole situation. By the way, we just took our 14 year old Granddaughter there in December for her birthday and she got free meal, no questions asked! I just think the whole situation was handled poorly by the staff, manager included. My Grandson was so embarrassed. We will NOT be returning. We usually spend several hundred dollars when we go so its your loss. In the future we will go where they treat customers with respect. Essentially they were saying a 12 year old was lying about his birthday for a free meal. That was wrong in so many ways.

Horrible experience. My mom wanted to take me out for my birthday, and since she is on a fixed income, I chose this place because they offer a "free birthday meal" when you sit at the hibachi table, and order one if the hibachi meals. In actuality, its not a "free meal". Its a "free meal", up to $17. The cheapest item for the grill is chicken for $17.50. I also brought my two children, under 10. I put their meals on a separate tab, so that my mom wouldnt have to pay for them too. The waitress spilled a little bit of their drinks on the floor next to our table. No one ever came to clean it up. She also brought the wrong dressing for the kids salads. I ordered my kids items off the childrens menus. When our bill came, they had charged one of them as the adult pricing. When I brought it to the waitresses attention, she said that they didnt have scallops on the childrens menu. When I showed her that they did, she said she would correct it and bring it back. When she returned, I was told that since when the cook came out and repeated everyones orders, I didnt correct him to say "children scallops" instead of just "scallops", and she was given the full portion, I would have to pay for it. My mother also had a gratuity added to her bill that only had two meals on it. To add insult to injury, not one person bothered to say happy birthday to me, even though they knew I was there celebrating my birthday. I even had to show them my ID to get the "discount". I was also in and out of the bathroom for two hours after we got home. This was an awful experience. Thanks a lot for ruining my birthday.

We were served hibachi and racism on 08-03-2015. The chef made racist remarks thinking they were funny about Indians, Mexicans ,and Cubans. He began acting like he was speaking like an Indian person and asking my daughter in law who is Indian why all Indians work at 7-11 and why they all sound the same when they speak and shake their heads. My daughter in law very clearly expressed that her family did not speak that way or work at 7-11 and he continued. My son is Mexican and Cuban he then went on to ask if where we live there are a lot of Home Depot stores and if we hated Donald Trump while laughing with complete disregard. We were shocked and did not even know what to do. We barley ate paid our bill and left. The next day we were still upset and I called the restaurant I eventually received a call from the owner and was told sorry. We dont live in St Augustine but we will never return to this restaurant the owner said to me we should have walked out and not paid sure so they could have called the police. Now he will not refund my money for a horrible meal and by the way the food is not good if your driving thru the area go to Kobes Japanese Steak House the service is wonderful and the food is great. Saddened and disgusted by the racism still alive and well. Oh yeah I almost forgot our server came and bought us our drinks, soup and salad an we never saw her again she never even picked up our salad or soup bowls.

I have visited over 20 different Japanese steakhouses and sushi bars in Northeast Florida. This place is a hit-or-miss. Salad was real bitter with harsh vegetables while the vegetable was bitter in the Vegetable Roll as well. I had also Salmon, roll which its fish cut was poorly done and smudged together that is not the sushi standard (FYI: The sushi chef was staring at the TV behind him watching a basketball game while making my sushi which reflects the quality I was served with). The price is very expensive about $50-60 for two people which I had better price for better food and bigger portion than what I was served at Yamato. If Yamato doesnt improve further, it will guaranteed to be on the course toward out of business. This is NOT a place I would considering coming again.

First off, im a regular here (or was anyway). Earlier I talked to a lady on the phone and she was extremely rude, I called them back, after I had another question and she actually hung up on me. As a regular I thought they could make a simple accommodation for a person who spends a lot of money here. I guess not. Not only will I never eat here again, I will never recommend them again either. I will be going to mikatos from now on. You have lost a regular customer. Maybe you should train your staff a little better.

I currently live in St Augustine and visited this steakhouse on 06/27/2015 at 9:05 pm. I had 6 relatives in town and wanted to treat them to dinner. We were turned away by the hostess. She told us that there was a 1 hr wait and they were busy. I think she thought insinuated we were blind. I counted the people eating and there was 23 guest. I manage a local business and we we stay as long as possible t serve our customers. For future reference, please do not go this place 1 hr before closing!
