Normally, I dont take the time to write reviews...but for this one I will. We came by this place by accident when we were on our 25th anniversary trip and our first choice was booked..Bombay club at the last minute ushered us in, gave us premiere seats, service, food, piano player played special music in our honor..and we definitely had a night to remember. My wife & I thought we would not be able to make it back since we live across country..as life changed..within 1 year we were within a couple of hours of DC. Now, we make it a point to stop in when we come to the city and each and every time..the service, food, drinks, place has been exceptional (I might note we are a family of foodies, gourmet cooks and have stayed in 5 star hotel/restaurants). The maitre d has accomodated us even when weve played tourist and have had a jeans wearing/bedraggled appearance..neatly putting us in a quiet corner where we could eat without being conspicuous. Our family has both ordered off the menu and also allowed the waiter to conspire with the chef to concoct some specialty not normally served...my wifes all time favorite and a guarantee for her happiness...one tanqueray & tonic, sparkling water, basket of naan, cucumber raita, green chile chicken, more water...and a cobra coffee...you have to order the coffee earlier as it takes some prep work and they create right at your table..a flaming orange is a nice way to finish off the evening. I might add, we are not alone in our appreciation for this place..amongst the times weve been here weve dined with mayors, celebrities, and i hear just missed a president of a foreign country...its ambiance lends itself to a quiet romantic evening, relaxed conversation with a good friend, and a quick jaunt to a foreign shore..whether youre a traveling plebe like me or a foreign dignitary..you are made to feel special...

If possible I would give them minus star. They need to understand - just the prime location and ambiance doesnt make a good restaurant. It is also the food and more importantly courtesy. They ARE SO RUDE. I visited alone on my first visit. All good. I had couple of visits lined up with more guests and I thought to myself Oh I found a nice place to take them out for dinner. I was wrong and HOW. I proudly took guests visiting from India to give them nice experience. But the management staff was so rude. They looked at them from bottom to top as if some alien has visited. Despite reservation they made us sit outdoors in hot weather. I asked them what did I make reservation for? They rudely said we didnt promise a particular table number. And the most disgusting part is it was 6 pm and the indoors seating was totally empty. Food was bad too and having it outdoors in midst of traffic made it worst. I thought of giving it another try few months later. This time I made sure I ask for indoor reservation. This time my guests had a 6 years old kid. They created such a frustrating experience. They said he cant talk loud (I mean come on, how loud a kid can go). His mother gave him phone to play a game. They came back and said he cant have game volume on (trust me it was NOT at all loud). Finally she tried to make the kid sleep. They came back again and said he cannot sleep!! I could not believe. Ultimately, we had to leave food mid way and leave. And they charged gratuity for large group automatically. Throughout our stay they kept looking at our table as if we were free loaders lol. How racist, pathetic and awful attitude. They are specially biased against south asian community and indians in particular. If you are alone or with white freinds they will treat you ok. But if with Indian family member they will give you worst treatment.

My husband and I were in the neighborhood and decided to try this place for dinner, not knowing anything about it beforehand. No reservation, but there was space to accommodate us in this small establishment. The live piano music added a nice touch to the rather SIMPLE "upscale" decor, but wasnt easily heard from the back of the room. This place just felt like it was trying too hard to justify itself. My husband and I finally chose what we wanted from the menu (just two entrees), then we waited more than 30 minutes for the food to arrive, and when it did, we locked eyes with each other because the portion sizes were immediately disappointing. My husband had ordered a $26 plate that was supposed to be shrimp, fish, and salmon, and all told, it was seriously about 6 bites of food (a fish medallion, one jumbo shrimp, and a sliver of salmon that my husband said was obviously the cheap salmon). He finished it in no time, then had to wait while I cut through my $20 two pieces of chicken-on-the-bone with a butter knife and attempted to eat as much of it the meat as I could get without going cavewoman-style and just picking at it or eating it with my hands. I left the $3 naan basket for my poor famished husband to eat, but he still had to eat a second dinner when we got home. We might as well have not even eaten at the Bombay Club. Ill also add that this was the first time in my husbands entire life that hes ever had Indian food, and I was excited to see what he thought of it, but I guess itll take more than this to convince him that Indian food is delicious. The flavors of the food were good, but not good enough to make us ever want to patronize this establishment again. The whole experience altogether was not worth the money spent and the near-empty stomachs we walked away with.

I am the polar opposite of a "foodie" and rarely do I venture into various ethnic cuisines -- give me a good burger and fries any day. But as I was planning to take my wife out for our anniversary, I wanted something that would challenge my tastebuds in a nice, romantic atmosphere. Based on other reviews of the Bombay Club, it sounded like it would be a perfect place. I wasnt wrong. It was reasonably quiet, darkly lit and with a candle on each table, and the piano player added a wonderful touch of ambience. Our server took care of us exceptionally well, offering menu suggestions, and he always seemed to be nearby without being intrusive. We started with goat cheese kulcha (it was almost like a small pizza) and butternut squash samosas, which were served with a spicy cilantro dipping sauce that was fantastic. For entrees, my wife had the shrimp curry -- I dislike seafood, but I did sample the curry sauce (which Id never tried) and enjoyed it a lot. I ordered the kashmiri roganjosh (lamb) which wasnt as spicy, but the meat was cooked perfectly. The portions appeared to be on the small side, but I have to admit that by the time we were done with our entrees, we were both stuffed. Nevertheless, we talked ourselves into the mango creme brulee for dessert, and ... wow. To say it was "good" would be a disservice to the chef. It was one of the best desserts Ive had anywhere. Overall, simply a fantastic meal in a wonderful environment. And there are plenty of "safe" options for those (like me) who arent typically very daring with their dining choices.
